Visitors driving through Lihue or heading to Hanalei may now find their rental cars passing automated license plate readers operated by Kauai police.
Kauai Police Department announced its license plate reader technology on October 22, following previously reported testing in Lihue and Hanalei.
Kauai police were already testing Motorola license plate readers in Lihue and Hanalei earlier this month, according to October 2 reporting.
In its October 22 announcement, KPD stated that information collected by its license plate cameras is accessible only within the department.
Those cameras are designed to document traffic violations, potentially resulting in citations that reach rental car customers after they return home.
