The technology is being embedded in an increasing number of machines that can sense, move, and operate in a physical space. Physical AI combines advanced computing models with sophisticated hardware: sensors, actuators (which convert electrical signals into physical motion), processors and machine vision. Together, they create robots and autonomous systems that can operate safely and productively in real environments. Humanoid robots and autonomous vehicles are the most visible examples of this tech in action. The autonomous vehicle market (including public transport) is estimated to grow to $1.2trn by 2040, thanks to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 44%1. As the technology continues to mature, the rate of adoption is accelerating: the proportion of US rideshare miles completed by robotaxis is forecast to increase from 0.4% in 2025 to 7.5% in 2030. Kratos Defense & Security Solutions says it completed a cross-country trip with a driverless truck that followed a driver-operated tractor trailer. According to the San Diego, California-based military weapons manufacturer, the tandem method is another viable use to advance commercial adoption of autonomous driving technology. To showcase its approach, Kratos, in partnership with Champion Tire & Wheel, a provider of motorsports logistics services for NASCAR, used a back-and-forth cross-country route that was expected to cover about 6,000 miles between June 12 and June 26, a spokesperson for Kratos told Trucking Dive in an email. The goal was to demonstrate how Kratos' military systems, which include autonomous aircraft, can also work in long-haul logistics operations. Conducting a cross-country trip demonstrated "scalable execution," VP of Business Development Maynard Factor said in a June 17 press release. "Our autonomous follower tractor-trailer successfully completed a cross-country logistics haul, demonstrating how platooning technology can safely improve efficiency, expand freight capacity, and help address ongoing driver shortages," Factor said. Jungheinrich invests in Navflex for autonomous truck unloading Jungheinrich is investing in the technology company Navflex, which specializes in Physical AI, to advance the automation of loading and unloading trucks. Together, the partners are developing an autonomous solution for truck handling at the ramp, which combines autonomous vehicle technology with AI-supported software and is designed for the European and North American markets. The system addresses one of the least automated processes in intralogistics to date and is already being tested under real-world conditions with major customers. The sophistication of autonomous driving in the Permian Basin The Permian Basin in West Texas is a perfect use case for autonomy, according to Lauren Harper, chief of staff of Kodiak AI. The United States’ most productive oil field is dirty, rough, and it’s difficult to hire and retain professional drivers. Kodiak partnered with Atlas Energy Solutions on autonomous freight movements starting in 2024. Atlas owns and operates 28 fully driverless, Class 8 trucks, moving sand from the conveyor system to well sites. In Harper’s view, the sophistication of the autonomous shipments taking place in the Permian Basin is misunderstood. While the area is nowhere as dense as city streets, these autonomous trucks are operating in “a much more dynamic environment than people initially assume,” she said. Harper said they are not traveling a closed course, and that anyone could rent a car and drive these roads. “These roads are shifting — there are no lane lines. You can’t have an HD map because it’s changing all the time,” she explained. “These are very narrow roads with bidirectional traffic.” These large trucks are passing within inches of each other, often times transporting hazardous freight. Three things to know Autonomous semi trucks are becoming a more visible part of freight traffic in Oklahoma, with a second company now operating a route into Oklahoma City. The new service, announced by Aurora Innovation in partnership with Volvo Autonomous Solutions, adds a 200-mile corridor between Dallas and Oklahoma City to the state’s limited but growing autonomous trucking activity. For drivers, the technology may sound like fully driverless trucking, but that is not what Oklahoma law currently allows. According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, these trucks can operate in autonomous mode in the state, but a person still must be in the driver’s seat. The expansion also comes as autonomous freight remains concentrated in one part of Oklahoma: Interstate 35 between Oklahoma City and the Texas state line. Zijin invests in proprietary battery-electric mining dump trucks Zijin Mining is one of China’s largest producers of gold, copper and zinc. After finding no suitable vehicles on the market that met its requirements, the company decided to establish its own production and assembly line for battery-electric mining dump trucks. By the end of 2025, the first model, the LK220E, had rolled off the production line. Zijin now operates nearly 300 battery-electric dump trucks, which, depending on the configuration, weigh up to 140 tonnes and are equipped with swappable batteries with a capacity of 776 kWh. According to thedriven.io, the first LK220E vehicles were delivered to the Julong copper mine in May. The mine is located at an altitude of around 5,300 metres and is considered a challenging operating environment due to its low temperatures and demanding terrain. Zijin has stated that the vehicles achieved an availability rate of over 90 per cent and reduced energy consumption by more than 17 per cent compared to similar models. The company is also developing additional models, including the larger battery-electric dump truck LK350E and the autonomous electric truck LK110EI. A delivery agreement for the LK350E has already been signed with the Julong copper mine, though Zijin has not yet disclosed the number of vehicles involved. Zijin is also advancing electrification at other sites. For example, the Xinjiang Zijin zinc mine is gradually replacing its diesel fleet with battery-electric vehicles. According to the company, more than 290 electric trucks from various manufacturers are already in operation there, including vehicles from the Chinese manufacturer Lingong Heavy Machinery.
