TLDI Data Highlights Cost Gap Between Older and Newer Trucks The latest TLDI compares 2022 through 2026 model-year trucks with new 2028 equipment using the April 2026 national average diesel price of $5.47 per gallon. According to the data, replacing a 2022 sleeper truck with a 2028 model can reduce first-year operating costs by up to $12,845 per vehicle. For a 100-truck fleet, that equates to potential savings of $1.28 million, excluding tariff adjustments. Fleet Advantage said diesel prices increased roughly 40% in one month, widening the cost gap between older, less fuel-efficient trucks and newer equipment. The company noted that many fleets are also evaluating alternative fuel options as part of their procurement strategies. The TLDI data points to savings in fuel efficiency, maintenance and repair, and total cost of ownership when fleets upgrade equipment. Fuel Efficiency Drives Savings Fuel economy remains one of the largest contributors to cost savings from truck replacement. Police said they “received calls to check the wellbeing of a man standing in the back of a semi trailer for a long period of time today.”

A former NASCAR team is being sued after a man claims he paid them for tractor trailers and other equipment that they never delivered.
The suit was filed in Iredell County, North Carolina Superior Court on Thursday, April 30th by a man who claims to have paid Randy Humphrey Racing $50,000 for tractor trailers and other related equipment in February 2024. The suit states that the man never received the trucks and other equipment he purchased.
According to WCNC, the plaintiff is seeking $50,000 from Randy Humphrey Racing, and any other monetary damages deemed appropriate by a judge. No court date had been set, and the racing team has not issued a legal response to the suit.
The Randy Humphrey Racing NASCAR team completed eight races in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2014, but is now defunct. Owner Randy Humphrey was previously a co-owner of Phil Parsons Racing and TriStar Motorsports.
The team has not competed since 2014, but is still a registered business in North Carolina. It was founded in 1995.

The U.S. has two primary modes of freight transportation. The first killed nearly 5,500 Americans in 2023, increasing 43 percent over the past decade, accounting for over 80 percent of all freight-related deaths. The second killed five—not five thousand, not five hundred—just five. The first is large trucks, the second is rail. In its infinite wisdom, Congress is considering enacting costly legislation focused on reducing the latter number—and has no plans to address the former. As Congress prepares to reauthorize surface transportation programs before the September 2026 deadline, the recently reintroduced Railway Safety Act would impose billions of dollars in new prescriptive mandates on freight rail, including a two-man crew minimum. Simultaneously, Congress is actively debating whether to allow autonomous trucks on our highways, which is a considerably more complex and dynamic system for autonomous vehicles. The Railway Safety Act is best seen as a direct response to the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment in February 2023. While the incident was an unsettling and disruptive event for the community, no one died from that derailment. The Norfolk Southern railroad ultimately paid a settlement of more than $600 million to affected residents. The threat of large settlement payouts like what occurred in East Palestine shows why railroads spend enormous sums to promote safety, and the system is working: Rail accidents have dropped 44 percent since 2000, and the Federal Railroad Administration just declared 2025 the safest year in the history of U.S. freight rail. It—rightly—calls the American rail network the safest in the world. Chinese start-up ZYT eyes mass production of semi-autonomous trucks this year
DJI spin-off is providing autopilot systems to six manufacturers, as fuel-saving abilities gain importance amid oil supply shock
The Shenzhen-based start-up, a spin-off from drone maker DJI, has formed partnerships with mainland China’s top six heavy-truck makers to produce models fitted with its navigation on autopilot (NOA) systems, with the first deliveries expected as early as the second half of 2026, according to ZYT’s vice-president Yu Beibei.
“Trucks, unlike passenger vehicles, are of big economic value to manufacturing and logistics companies,” she said in an interview. “They are willing to pay a premium to own and operate the lorries that prove to be more efficient.”
Initial evidence showed the trucks using ZYT’s NOA systems could save 3 per cent on fuel costs a year, according to the company.
The NOA systems are classified as either Level 2 (L2) or L2+, requiring drivers to keep their hands on the wheel at all times.

To improve safety and operational consistency at Drummond Island, Carmeuse is integrating Cat MineStar Command for hauling across its fleet of 100-ton 777 trucks, alongside complementary MineStar capabilities for loaders and support equipment at the mine site. MineStar enables fully autonomous haul cycles using onboard sensors, GPS guidance, and centralized fleet management systems that coordinate truck movements across the site. The system is designed to reduce human exposure to operational hazards while delivering more predictable production. "Our advanced technology will help take Carmeuse's operations to the next level with greater safety, performance, and positioning for the future," said John Shanahan, senior vice president of resource industries sales, services, and technology at Caterpillar.
