Study: Waymo robotaxis had fewer crashes than human drivers across four cities AUSTIN, Texas — Driverless Waymo vehicles crashed less often than human-driven cars across four major U.S. cities, according to a new study, though Austin was an outlier where Waymo’s crash rate was slightly higher than the others. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety compared crash rates between human-driven vehicles and Waymo’s autonomous vehicles in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin. The results found Waymo vehicles crashed 68 percent less than human drivers overall. By city, the study found Waymo had 76 percent fewer crashes than human drivers in Phoenix, 71 percent fewer in Los Angeles and 35 percent fewer in San Francisco. In Austin, Waymo’s crash rate was 4 percent higher than human-driven cars. Waymo said Austin’s results were influenced by the timing of its rollout there. The company said its autonomous vehicles began operating in Austin after the other cities, resulting in fewer sample miles. Waymo also said it wants regulators to standardize how these safety metrics are measured. The automakers could begin installing the units in vehicles as early as 2029. Although a proposed merger between the two companies was scrapped, Honda and Nissan are seeking to strengthen their relationship jointly developing vehicle components. SDVs are next-generation vehicles with software that can be updated over the internet, allowing manufacturers to improve performance and add features, such as autonomous-driving capabilities. Honda and Nissan plan to jointly develop a central ECU that oversees the entire vehicle. They are also considering supplying the unit to Mitsubishi Motors Corp., in which Nissan holds a 26 percent stake, and exploring whether they can standardize the underlying software. Conventional vehicles typically contain dozens of ECUs, each controlling a separate function, such as the engine or brakes. The technology is by no means new. In Hamburg, selected passengers can already ride in self-driving minibuses, and other projects are underway in Berlin, Hesse, and Bavaria, among other places. Saxony, too, has been working on these technologies for years and aims to integrate autonomous vehicles into regular public transit service by 2030. London Gatwick Airport (LGW) will institute a robot automobile parking service in August, enabling passengers to drop off cars to be autonomously parked. French firm Stanley Robotics is the technology provider. Airports around the world are increasingly utilizing robots, including to guide passengers in terminals and for baggage handling tasks. Passengers who prebook the robot parking service at LGW arrive at the airport and park their car in a designated cabin. The car is turned off, the passenger confirms the booking on a screen and heads to the terminal by either walking or taking a short shuttle ride to the airport’s South Terminal. LGW said the walk takes 6 min. and the shuttle takes 7-15 min. An autonomous vehicle will then load the vehicle by its tires and move it to a parking spot. Passengers keep their car keys. “The robots use advanced technology to safely move your car, constantly monitoring their surroundings to avoid obstacles,” LGW says. “In the unlikely event of an issue, on-site teams are available to help.” For arrival and retrieval of the car, the Stanley Robotics system stores passenger flight details and monitors landings, alerting robot vehicles to move cars back to a cabin for pickup. LGW said cars should be waiting for passengers in a designated cabin. Passengers must book the service in advance, and the car must be parked for a minimum of five days. The service is only available to passengers dropping off and picking up cars on weekdays. LGW said these restrictions will be “adjusted and eased” as the service scales. Tesla’s latest earnings report was very bad news for the company. In the second quarter, it made $1.1 billion in net profit, less than the $1.2 billion it reported a year earlier. Vehicle sales were up, but profits remain about a quarter billion short of expectations, and the automaker’s cash flow is negative for the first time in over two years. But the real blow has been the slow rollout of its Robotaxi service. Elon Musk has staked his automaker’s future on fully autonomous vehicles, promising investors it would help push Tesla’s valuation to an eyebrow-raising $30 trillion — approximately the gross domestic product of the United States, for perspective. And importantly, he promised to get this done quickly. Before launching Tesla’s first Robotaxi service in Austin last summer, Musk estimated that over 1,000 of the self-driving cabs would be roaming the streets “within a few months.” Now, a year later, Tesla doesn’t even have a hundred Robotaxis in operation. And its efforts seem to actually be regressing. According to a new chart the company released Wednesday, the Robotaxi network racked up fewer miles from paying customers in the second quarter than it did in the first. The chart, which may be the most dismal single aspect of the entire earnings cycle, misleadingly displays this data as cumulative miles to make it appear like the Robotaxi service is steadily growing. But TechCrunch broke it down, finding that in the first quarter, Tesla’s driverless cabs carrying paying passengers drove around 1.1 million miles, but fell to just 700,000 miles in the second — cratering by over a third. IIHS determined that self-driving cars were involved in 68% fewer crashes than human-driven cars on a per-mile basis. But there was a lot of clutter in the data to cut through to come up with a realistic comparison, said lead author Eric Teoh. Both the federal government and California collect data on self-driving car collisions, but the companies operating the driverless cars are required to report everything that results in any damage. And the threshold is very low. Teoh said the driverless car companies have to report things that aren't even crashes to most of us, like turning left into a parking lot and scraping the vehicle’s undercarriage. Meanwhile, human drivers are generally only required to report crashes that cause an injury or result in more than $1,000 in property damage to the police, according to IIHS. A person isn’t going to call the police over a scratched bumper, Teoh said. (CBS12) — The truck driver facing charges in a deadly Florida Turnpike crash that killed three people did not appear in St. Lucie County court Thursday morning. CAUGHT ON CAM: Surveillance video shows burglary spree targeting 4 businesses MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (7News) — Surveillance video shows the dramatic moments burglars smashed windows with a baseball bat, stole money from cash registers, and scampered away early Monday morning during a string of break-ins targeting four Bethesda, Maryland, businesses. Montgomery County Police Department officials said these four burglaries happened in the early morning hours Monday, July 20, on the 7800 and 7900 blocks of Old Georgetown Road. In each of the surveillance videos provided to 7News, you see two masked burglars smash their way into the stores, and exit within seconds. One video shows the two suspects attempting to take the entire cash register, with one of them slipping on the debris. In that same video, you can hear the driver in the getaway car honk the horn, and the two suspects run out of the nail salon. Praneet Aryal is the owner of Lilit Cafe, one of the businesses that was hit. "We found out when we first got here. We just saw the glass shattered everywhere and it was a mess everywhere. We were just surprised. Didn't expect anything like that to happen," Aryal said. Aryal said the burglars took his entire cash register, which had around $1,000 in it. He said replacing the shattered window cost another $2,000. "We're a small business, a family-owned business, so it means a lot to us. It's a big hit for us to take, especially just out of nowhere like that," Aryal said. Police are asking anyone with information to call them. In the meantime, Aryal said this burglary spree has made him more vigilant. "We're definitely a bit more on-edge and just more aware of everything now," Aryal said. Trial date set for man accused of killing six in 2023 Austin, San Antonio shooting spree AUSTIN, Texas (WOAI/KABB) — A trial date has been set for Shane James, the man accused of killing six people across Austin and San Antonio in December 2023, with prosecutors announcing they will not seek the death penalty. James appeared in Travis County court Wednesday, where testimony is scheduled to begin Oct. 29 following jury selection Oct. 26-28. The trial is expected to last three weeks. James has been arraigned and pleaded not guilty. James is accused of killing his parents in San Antonio before driving to Austin, where he allegedly shot and killed four more people and wounded three others, including two police officers. Authorities took James into custody Dec. 5, 2023, the same day as the Austin shootings. In October 2024, a Travis County judge ruled James incompetent to stand trial and ordered him committed to a mental health facility for treatment. He was ruled competent to stand trial in July 2025.
