Waymo's robotaxis are now a common sight on the streets of Miami, and with their proliferation comes a practical question that more and more residents are asking: what should one do if one of these driverless vehicles is involved in an accident? According to a report by El Nuevo Herald, the company has established a clear protocol for these cases, although the legal aspects can become significantly more complex than in a conventional accident. The first thing is the most urgent: if there are injured people, call 911 immediately. Waymo warns that the vehicle may continue to drive after a collision to reach a safe place to stop, and the interior ceiling light will turn on if the system detects that an impact has occurred. To exchange information with the company, there are four options: call 1-844-263-9885, write to insurance@waymo.com, complete an online form, or scan the QR code located on the front doors of the vehicle. The Waymo support team receives an automatic notification for any incident, and a representative will arrive at the scene to assess the situation. "It is extremely important to take photos and videos after the collision to preserve evidence of the incident," said Ted Hollander, attorney at The Ticket Clinic. If the passenger is traveling within the robotaxi when the crash occurs, they should also obtain the information from the other driver involved: name and insurance information. Waymo offers limited medical coverage for all passengers involved in a collision, regardless of who is at fault or whether they have additional insurance. The company clarifies that, once information has been exchanged, it is not necessary to wait for a representative unless indicated by the authorities present at the scene. From a legal standpoint, accidents involving robotaxis introduce a different landscape compared to traditional collisions. "If,

Analysis SHANGHAI – As the first light spread across an orchard on the outskirts of Wuhan in central China, Zhang Shuwang loaded crates of freshly picked fruit onto a small autonomous delivery van. After scanning a QR code with his customers’ addresses, he stepped back and watched as the vehicle quietly made its way down a country road. Developed by Zelostech, the van uses real-time sensing and artificial intelligence (AI) to navigate without relying on costly high-definition maps, making autonomous deliveries feasible even in remote rural areas. For years, getting fruit to market was Zhang’s biggest headache. The nearest wholesale market is about 60 kilometers away, and truck drivers were often reluctant to make the trip. At best, he could make one delivery a day. Sometimes the fruit spoiled before it ever left the orchard. That changed last year, when Zhang’s son suggested he try the robovan. “Within a month, I saw the difference,” Zhang said. “Now the fruit we pick in the early morning reaches customers the very same day. On busy mornings, the van can make three to four trips, and my annual income has gone up by at least 30 to 40 percent.” Zhang is one of a growing number of ordinary people in China who are benefiting from AI as the technology spreads beyond big cities and large corporations to improve the lives of farmers, doctors and small business owners. That shift is also the backdrop to the 2026 World AI Conference (WAIC) and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance, which opened in Shanghai on Friday. Inside the exhibition halls, visitors crowd around Huawei’s latest AI computing supernode system Atlas 950; Kimi K3, the world’s largest open-source model with 2.8 trillion parameters; and the world’s first agentic AI phone, alongside a range of humanoid robots and

To get this in your inbox, sign up here for free — just click TechCrunch Mobility! Last week, I wrote about Uber and Waymo and how their partnership appears to be deteriorating. I predicted the two companies would end up on opposing sides of autonomous vehicle policy. That wasn’t a guess. For the past several weeks, I’ve been talking to sources and digging through correspondence Uber sent to the D.C. Council, which is evaluating a proposed bill that would allow autonomous vehicles to operate in Washington, D.C. What I found: Uber and Waymo are already on opposite sides of the proposal, sparring behind the scenes and in public. Uber has made a particularly interesting argument in its effort to shape the rules that govern autonomous vehicles. Uber, which opposes the D.C. bill, argues it would displace for-hire human drivers and hand Waymo a de facto monopoly. Instead, it has lobbied for a system that would require robotaxis to operate on a ride-hailing network alongside human drivers. Insiders tell me the “hybrid” approach has little chance of becoming law. But if it did, it would leave AV developers like Waymo with two suboptimal choices: either put their robotaxis on ride-hailing apps like Uber or employ human drivers alongside fleets of robotaxis that took years and hundreds of millions of dollars to develop. A D.C. Council hearing on Monday drew representatives from Lyft, Tesla, Uber, and Waymo, along with dozens of disability rights and accessibility advocates, local business and industry groups, highway safety organizations, government officials, labor unions, and think tanks. My takeaway — based on the public testimony and the calls and texts I received afterward — is

A power outage knocked out traffic signals across parts of San Francisco‘s Richmond District and Presidio on Saturday morning. This time, Waymo got out of the way before things went sideways. The company said it paused service in the area for about an hour starting shortly after the outage began, a precaution it says was informed by two earlier incidents — a December blackout and a Fourth of July fireworks celebration — that left dozens of its driverless vehicles stuck in the street. A Waymo spokesperson said there were no reported problems on Saturday, describing the pause as a chance to assess conditions on the ground before resuming rides. San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Mariano Elias confirmed there were no known issues. The Waymo spokesperson said the company stayed in contact with San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management throughout the outage, and that some service adjustments in the affected area remained in place as of Saturday afternoon. The outage began around 9:45 a.m., according to PG&E spokesperson Edgar Hopida, and initially affected about 9,400 customers in the Richmond and Golden Gate Park neighborhoods. The outage occurred during routine switching work between the N and K substations, done to let crews perform maintenance without de-energizing larger sections of the grid, Hopida added in a late afternoon update. PG&E said it will investigate further to determine what went wrong. An automated alert briefly and incorrectly told 120,000 customers they’d lost power — the result, Hopida said, of a notification system rolling the outage up to a larger protective device. The false alert stemmed from a data-transmission issue between SmartMeter and PG&E’s Outage Management System, Hopida said, which “communicated a much larger outage than was reality.” Power was restored to all but 2,500 customers by 12:10 p.m., Hopida said, and all customers

Amazon-owned Zoox has issued a software recall affecting 105 of its autonomous vehicles after one of its robotaxis entered a smoke-filled emergency scene and failed to respond as intended. The recall introduces software improvements designed to enhance smoke detection and the vehicle's ability to recognize emergency situations with reduced visibility. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the software update is being deployed over the air to the affected fleet. Smoke-Filled Fire Scene Prompted the Recall The incident occurred on June 20, 2026, when an unoccupied Zoox robotaxi approached an active fire scene where heavy smoke obscured the roadway. According to the NHTSA recall report, the emergency area had not yet been fully secured with traffic cones before the autonomous vehicle entered the smoke-covered section of the road. Zoox said the robotaxi braked while attempting to steer away from the affected area. A remote teleguidance operator then instructed the vehicle to reverse out of the scene. Firefighters completed the road closure shortly afterward. The company reported that no passengers were inside the vehicle, and no injuries or collisions occurred during the incident. Software Update Improves Smoke Detection The software recall focuses on improving how the autonomous vehicle responds when visibility is limited by dense smoke. Zoox said the update strengthens the robotaxi's ability to detect smoke, recognize emergency response scenes, and make safer driving decisions in changing road conditions. The company is distributing the software update through an over-the-air rollout, allowing all affected robotaxis to receive the changes without requiring service visits. Zoox stated that the recall applies to 105 vehicles operating within its autonomous fleet. NHTSA Recall Filed Earlier This Month The recall was filed with the NHTSA on July 8, 2026, before becoming publicly available on July 17. The agency's safety report describes the incident and

Electric Vehicle Market Enters Trillion-Dollar Era, Is Tesla or Rivian More Worthy of Long-Term Investment? The global electric vehicle industry is expanding, yet investment cases for Tesla and Rivian diverge significantly based on maturity. Tesla has transitioned into an integrated technology firm, leveraging its profitable automotive business, energy storage, and AI advancements to mitigate risks. Conversely, Rivian remains in a high-growth, early-stage phase, relying heavily on the success of its mass-market R2 model to achieve profitability. While Tesla offers greater stability and proven execution, Rivian presents higher speculative upside. Investors must weigh Tesla’s premium valuation against the operational and financing risks inherent in Rivian’s path to scaling production. TradingKey - The global new energy vehicle industry is still in a phase of rapid expansion. According to market research institution forecasts, the global electric vehicle market size is expected to continue growing over the next few years, potentially reaching approximately $2.2 trillion by 2034, with a long-term compound annual growth rate of nearly 10%. As traditional automakers accelerate their transition, battery technologies make continuous breakthroughs, and autonomous driving and smart vehicle ecosystems gradually mature, the EV industry remains an important focus of attention in capital markets. However, for investors, industry growth does not mean all electric vehicle companies will become winners. So, between Tesla ( TSLA) and Rivian ( RIVN ), these two representative EV companies, which stock is more suitable for long-term holding? The answer depends on whether investors value certainty more, or expect more growth flexibility. What Is the Biggest Advantage of Investing in Tesla? Tesla's greatest advantage is not simply its vehicle sales volume, but rather that it has completed its transformation from an electric vehicle manufacturer into an integrated technology company. Over the past decade and more, Tesla has built a globally leading EV brand on the

From:Internet Info Agency 2026-07-18 11:20:00 Amazon-owned autonomous driving company Zoox recently issued a software recall affecting 105 self-driving taxis. The recall stems from a flaw in the vehicle’s perception system that prevented it from detecting dense smoke, causing one of its vehicles to enter an emergency response zone at a fire scene in Las Vegas on June 20. At the time, no traffic cones were deployed to cordon off the area, and heavy smoke obscured the roadway. The unoccupied Zoox vehicle drove directly into the active emergency operations area but fortunately came to a safe stop after triggering emergency braking. No injuries occurred, and remote operators subsequently guided the vehicle to reverse and exit the scene. Zoox has reported the recall to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and has deployed a software patch to address the smoke-detection vulnerability. NHTSA recently issued a special directive highlighting that autonomous vehicles frequently interfere with firefighting, medical, and other emergency operations—common industry issues include entering accident scenes, blocking emergency access routes, and failing to recognize smoke or warning signs. The agency has ordered relevant companies to implement corrective measures and submit solutions by the end of the month. Zoox operates driverless shuttle vehicles without steering wheels or pedals and has been conducting passenger-carrying tests in multiple U.S. cities. This marks the company’s second software recall within a year; a previous update addressed issues related to lane-keeping and pedestrian prediction. Separately, public records show that industry leader Waymo recalled nearly 3,900 vehicles last month after its system misjudged road conditions, causing vehicles to enter a closed highway construction zone. Safety deficiencies in autonomous perception systems have now become a key focus for regulators. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA | TSLA Price Prediction) sits at the intersection of electric vehicles, autonomous driving, energy storage, and humanoid robotics, and the setup into 2027 is one of the most watched in the market. With shares changing hands at $397.92 and a model that just finalized the design of the AI5 inference processor alongside pilot production of Cybercab, the question retail investors keep asking is straightforward: what could a $10,000 stake actually be worth a year from now? The Headline Answer Under the base-case model, a $10,000 investment in Tesla could be worth about $11,082 by 2027, a total return of 10.82%. That base case is anchored to a modeled 1-year share price target of $440.95, with a model confidence level of 90% and a BUY recommendation. Wall Street’s own consensus analyst target sits at $425.24, roughly in line with the base scenario. Scenario Table: What $10,000 Could Become by 2027 | Scenario | Target Share Price | Total Return | Ending Value of $10,000 | |---|---|---|---| | Bull (Optimistic) | $493.69 | 24.07% | $12,407 | | Base | $440.95 | 10.82% | $11,082 | | Bear (Conservative) | $384.29 | -3.42% | $9,658 | The spread is wide because Tesla’s beta is 1.802, meaningfully more volatile than the broader market. The current share price sits 15% below the 52-week high of $498.83, with the 52-week low at $297.82. Traders on Polymarket are also digesting this range in real time, with the crowd assigning a 64.5% probability that Tesla beats the next quarterly earnings print. The Why: Three Drivers Behind the Target 1. Analyst consensus is skewed constructive. Of the covering analysts, 5 rate the stock Strong Buy, 18 Buy, 18 Hold, 4 Sell, and 2 Strong Sell. The Incident That Triggered the Recall The vehicle failed to recognize the smoke, drove into the area, then suddenly applied its brakes and tried to turn, eventually coming to a halt. No injuries were identified. On July 8, Zoox contacted the federal auto-safety agency to report what had happened. Zoox then announced a voluntary software recall for 105 of its robotaxis. That is a small fleet compared with Waymo's roughly 4,000 vehicles operating across the U.S., but the pattern worries regulators. NHTSA Is Pushing the Whole Industry This is not just a Zoox problem. NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison sent a letter to all autonomous vehicle developers in which he said the agency has "identified a clear pattern of driverless AVs interfering with law enforcement and other first responders." Morrison directed AV developers and operators to "immediately focus their resources on fixing this issue." Waymo itself recalled about 3,900 robotaxis last month because several of its cars entered closed construction zones on freeways. Two separate incidents in two months from two different companies suggest the technology still struggles with unusual physical obstacles. Get the market news that matters in a five-minute read with Market Briefs, our free daily newsletter NHTSA has given every autonomous vehicle developer until the end of the month to present solutions for keeping their cars away from emergency scenes. That deadline applies to the whole industry, not just Zoox. What This Means for Amazon's Bet Amazon paid $1.3 billion to buy Zoox in 2020. The company says it is working on a fix for the 105 recalled vehicles. For investors, the bigger story is the regulatory mood. NHTSA is signaling it will hold autonomous vehicle companies to a high bar around public safety, especially near first responders. That could slow down the rollout of self-driving taxis across

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng has just launched its new L03 in Munich, using Germany's automotive capital as the backdrop to showcase a future where artificial intelligence is as central to a vehicle as its battery or motor. The launch is part of the company's "In Europe, for Europe" strategy as it expands its presence in the region. While the sleek electric sedan is appealing, Xpeng says its real differentiator lies in its AI-powered features including intelligent voice interaction, personalized driver preferences and advanced driver assistance designed to make the driving experience more intuitive. "For us, it's all about physical AI," said Sven De Smet, Head of Brand and Product at Xpeng Europe. "We make products you can touch, where AI is able to act and react with its environment." Xpeng's new L03 is a sleek electric sedan - and part of the company's 'In Europe, for Europe' stratgey. /Natalie Carney/CGTN 'A physical AI company' The company is also developing its own AI chips, autonomous driving technology, a flying vehicle and a humanoid robot called Iron, reflecting its goal of becoming what it describes as a "physical AI company" rather than simply an automaker. "We don't see ourselves as a car company that does technology," De Smet told CGTN. "We see ourselves as a technology company that also does cars." The strategy reflects a broader transformation taking place across the global automotive industry. As electric technology becomes the standard, manufacturers are shifting their focus toward software, AI and autonomous driving capabilities. "Everybody's going into that direction to have AI-assisted driving," said Beatrix Keim, Director of the Centre for Automotive Research. The firm notes that Tesla has added Miami as its fifth robotaxi market and is scaling its Texas fleet at the fastest pace among operators it tracks. The combination matters because it shifts Tesla’s story from promise to visible expansion, even if the network is still early and uneven. - TSLA stock is moving. See the chart and price action here. Tesla Adds Robotaxi Markets and Vehicles Tesla’s Texas fleet now stands at 175 vehicles, up by more than 100 in the past month, according to the note. That kind of growth gives Tesla a stronger case that its robotaxi effort is more than a demo. It is building an actual operating footprint. Bank of America also points out that Tesla now has four additional markets in preparation, which suggests the company is still pushing toward the original goal of nine cities by the first half of 2026. Miami’s launch adds another proof point that Tesla wants to expand quickly while interest in autonomous driving remains high. The robotaxi push is only one part of the bull case. Tesla’s second-quarter deliveries came in around 480,000, far above Street expectation. BofA also says the company likely gained global battery-electric vehicle share which helps offset worries that the core auto business is slowing. The Takeaway Bank of America kept its Buy rating and $460 price target on TSLA. The firm views Tesla as trying to turn autonomy into a real business while the EV business still supports the base case. For now, the most important question is whether the company can keep adding markets, vehicles and usage fast enough to justify its robotaxi ambition. TSLA Stock Price Activity: Tesla stock was down 2.32% at $381.98 at the time of publication Friday, according to data from Benzinga Pro. Over the past month, TSLA

The Dyson Hot+Cool HF1 is a sleek 2-in-1 smart appliance that provides heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. Designed for year-round comfort, the $499 unit combines quiet operation and smart controls with Dyson’s signature bladeless design. I typically use a ceiling fan for the summer and a space heater for the winter. After three months of testing, the HF1 was a game changer for me, and not just because it replaced two appliances. It was HF1’s smart features that made this appliance particularly handy. Dyson provided the HF1 unit, which will be returned to the manufacturer. Although you can control the HF1 using the onboard controls or the included remote, you can also operate it from your smartphone with the MyDyson app. I found it especially convenient to turn the HF1 on or off from my phone — even when I wasn’t in the room — as well as set timers, adjust the oscillation, and create schedules so it would automatically turn on whenever I wanted. The HF1 is quiet enough for bedrooms and home offices. In Sleep mode, it operates at just 26 decibels and automatically dims its display. I’m a light sleeper who prefers complete silence at night, and I was able to adjust the fan noise quickly. The HF1 features an adjustable tilt that lets you direct airflow where you need it. For wider coverage, it can be adjusted to oscillate at 15, 40, or 70 degrees. The HF1’s intelligent thermostat continuously monitors the room and automatically adjusts its heating output to reach and maintain your chosen temperature. One important caveat: The HF1’s cooling mode is essentially a high-powered fan, not an air conditioner, so it circulates air rather than lowering the room’s temperature. One of my favorite features about the HF1 is its

The mayor of San Francisco is tired of his city serving as an autonomous vehicle test track. In a letter sent to California transportation regulators on Wednesday, Daniel Lurie called for new statewide standards governing how autonomous vehicles respond during major disruptions, saying that stricter measures will strengthen the AV industry. "California's challenge now is not just whether autonomous vehicles can operate safely under normal conditions, but also whether they can perform reliably during extraordinary ones," Lurie wrote. "Prove it before you deploy it," Lurie added, "Before deploying autonomous vehicles, autonomous vehicle operators must demonstrate major event operational readiness through testing and exercises." Lurie's letter described two incidents that he says made new regulations necessary. The mayor said that on the evening of the Fourth of July, heavy traffic around San Francisco's waterfront left numerous Waymo vehicles immobilized, blocking travel lanes and worsening a traffic jam that trapped municipal shuttles and thousands of people trying to leave the city's fireworks celebration. Lurie also pointed to a citywide power outage in December 2025 that similarly stranded Waymo's robotaxis and paralyzed public transportation.
