We took a self‑driving car on the road for 100 days to see how it handled itself – these are the mistakes it kept making In March, Jensen Huang, chief executive of computer chip giant NVIDIA, declared the “ChatGPT moment” for self-driving cars had arrived. In Australia, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system is already available on public roads. Waymo is exploring robotaxi operations in Australia. The question is no longer whether autonomous driving will arrive, but whether Australia is ready to operate it safely, efficiently and sustainably. This raises an infrastructure question: can roads, bridges and intersections designed for human drivers also be understood by machines? Over the past 100-plus days, my colleagues and I have used a Tesla Model Y with FSD every day on Queensland roads. We recorded more than 500 safety-critical events where the system required driver intervention or revealed an important limitation in how it interpreted the road environment. To make some of these observations useful beyond our own research, we initiated White Box Autonomy as a public archive of events where autonomous vehicles hit problems in real-world conditions. Two things stood out. First, the technology is already far more capable than many people realise. In many cases the vehicle handled the driving task smoothly, with a precision that is hard for a human driver to match. Second, it is also less capable than many people assume. Waymo said no injuries were reported in that incident and the vehicle was not damaged. The company added that it has reached out to the rider to check in on them. Some Waymos also had their operations disrupted on July Fourth due to traffic. A spokesperson said its roadside assistance team cleared the vehicle from the area. The spokesperson added that it is evaluating and learning from events like this. The company said it's committed to keeping its riders safe and earning the trust of the public. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie's office issued a statement about the traffic in the city Saturday night, saying safety was the top priority. The future is now. Self-driving ag machines are rolling across farm fields. But while it might seem like recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence have suddenly enabled automation in agriculture, its development has been a long time coming. “I’ve been saying, ‘It’s next year,’ for 25 years,” said Mel Torrie, founder and CEO of Autonomous Solutions Inc. (ASI). Autonomous machines work by using sensors to gather data about their surroundings such as obstacles, terrain and weather. Software then analyzes this data and tells the machine what to do next: turn left, speed up, stop or adjust its operation. The foundations of machine learning dates back to World War II, where it was developed to predict aircraft trajectories and weather trends. Innovations like GPU chips accelerate processing, enabling edge computing, or the ability to process information directly within devices rather than through cloud technology. So, why now? Torrie said the conditions are now right for automation. “We have this convergence of labor challenges and governments being willing to bring some standards. It is time, and so we are now pedal to the metal,” he said. He speaks from experience, having developed ag tech machine automation for more than 26 years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is officially planning to update the United States' Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) so that select vehicles will no longer require brake pedals. This is part of the Transportation Department's most recent effort to help deregulate automobiles in a way that could benefit autonomous vehicles. Frankly, the federal government has been extremely accommodating ever since the industry first started testing self-driving cars. Most of the early guidance for autonomous vehicles was pretty open ended, with only the FMVSS requirements standing in the way of what could be used on public roads. However, the industry has been pressuring regulators to ease up so they can produce more AVs without human controls. Officially, the government wants to modify FMVSS No. 135 - which pertains to the braking systems equipped to light vehicles. "We are at the cusp of the greatest technological revolution in vehicle technology since the innovation of the Model T," stated NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison. "If we want America to lead the way, we have to reimagine our regulatory framework. That's why under Secretary Sean Duffy's AV Framework, NHTSA is tearing down pointless barriers to innovative designs while strengthening the fundamental safety requirements that matter and holding AV developers accountable for safe performance. Nat Ford, CEO of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority, will leave his position with the authority, according to a July 3 news release from JTA. Ford, JTA’s CEO for 13 years, will remain with the authority through Jan. 8, 2027, according to the release. The JTA board is set to discuss selection for the authority’s next CEO at its July 29 board meeting. “The JTA is operationally strong and well-positioned for the future,” Ford said in the release. “I have full confidence in the leadership team’s ability to continue advancing our mission. It has been the greatest professional honor of my career to serve this organization, this city, and this region.” “Under the leadership of Nat, JTA has built a national reputation for innovating, particularly in the autonomous vehicle space,” board Chair Aundra Wallace said in the release. Virginia's "Intelligent Speed Assistance" Program Is Now Officially Active Virginia lawmakers have turned the state into a real-world testbed for mandatory, vehicle-integrated speed governors. Effective July 1, 2026, Virginia became the first state in the nation to allow judges to sentence traffic offenders to a court-ordered Intelligent Speed Assistance program. Passing under the radar as House Bill 2096 during the 2025 legislative cycle, the law gives courts an alternative to traditional driver's license suspensions by allowing them to order the physical installation of a GPS-linked throttle limiter inside a defendant's personal vehicle. For the consumer, it represents a structural shift from passive state enforcement to active, real-time intervention. The system is far more invasive than the simple audible speed alerts currently mandated on new European market vehicles. The hardware unit integrates with the vehicle's electronic throttle control architecture via the factory CAN bus or onboard diagnostics network, constantly cross-referencing live GPS coordinates with a localized speed limit database. When the vehicle reaches the legal limit of whatever stretch of blacktop it occupies, the module overrides driver input, restricting the electronic throttle modulation to cap acceleration. The system does not actuate the brake calipers or cut the ignition entirely, meaning the vehicle can still coast down inclines at higher speeds, but it prevents the engine from generating the power required to accelerate any further. The software includes a brief built-in allowance, permitting a few seconds of additional throttle to complete a passing maneuver before the electronic ceiling re-engages.
