But electric vehicle giant Tesla (TSLA) has, and is now reportedly working on what it calls a ââ¦purpose-built, wheelchair-accessible autonomous vehicleâ in its Cybercab line. The news was good enough as far as investors were concerned, and Tesla shares gained fractionally in Tuesday afternoonâs trading. Tesla has been working to improve access for the disabled, including such things as braille lettering on controls and seating that is at wheelchair-height to help make transfers to and from a Cybercab easier. India Herdman, a Tesla senior policy advisor, noted, âWe know that paratransit can be very difficult, and people who are confined to wheelchairs permanently should still be able to move around freely, so that is an active product being built by Tesla in Texas.â Indeed, making Cybercabs wheelchair-accessible should help improve their level of usability in that segment of the population, and expand Teslaâs market reach accordingly. Rebate Win We all know that Tesla got hit hard by the loss of federal rebates, but there was always the potential for state rebates to get involved. And indeed, one such rebate did, as California recently signed a $270 million electric vehicle rebate into law, starting up this summer. The rebate is actually a step up from earlier plans, as it means money directly placed with dealerships instead of tax credits issued, which may not factor in for several months. NHTSA Is Sick Of Self-Driving Cars Getting In The Way Of Emergency Responders Despite the unending amount of headaches first responders willingly deal with on a day-to-day basis, technology over the last few years has forced a new mega-headache onto the front lines in the form of autonomous vehicles. Designed to get humans from place to place without a driver, these "robots" on wheels are the stars of first responders' nightmares and keeping them from attending to emergencies in a timely matter. Well, enough is enough, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration put out a letter this week that said autonomous vehicles getting in first responders' ways is absolutely "unacceptable" and the agency is determined to fix it. The letter follows a recent closed-door meeting NHTSA had with law enforcement and first responders from areas where AVs are deployed to better understand the problems and nuances they've had to face while simply trying to do their job to save lives. What was shared there is unlikely to have been pretty, as even just the handful of incidents Jalopnik has covered in recent months doesn't paint a great picture. Jonathan Morrison, NHTSA administrator, wrote, "To state it bluntly: an AV that cannot safely interact with first responders is a danger to the general public." ... "Every second matters when law enforcement officers, firefighters, or paramedics are answering a call because lives are on the line. VIDEO: San Francisco first responders are raising concerns about autonomous vehicles blocking emergency routes and delaying response times, prompting city leaders to explore additional accountability measures for self-driving car companies.
The concerns come three years after the California Public Utilities Commission allowed Waymo and Cruise to expand self-driving vehicle operations in San Francisco. Since then, hundreds of autonomous vehicles have become part of daily life in the city, but firefighters say they have also created challenges during some emergency responses.
“Anytime we are blocked by any autonomous vehicle that matters, and we don’t want that to continue to happen,” said Mariano Elias of the San Francisco Fire Department. The department has been documenting incidents involving autonomous vehicles for years, according to Elias.

News Tesla is building a wheelchair-accessible Robotaxi Tesla revealed on Monday that it is building a new autonomous vehicle at Gigafactory Texas, its plant just outside of the City of Austin. This particular vehicle will be geared toward those who are in need of a wheelchair-accessible car that would require no human driver for operation. According to a new report from Wired, Tesla’s Senior Policy Advisor, India Herdman, told members of the Washington D.C. City Council on Monday: “We are in development for a purpose-built, wheelchair-accessible autonomous vehicle. We know that paratransit can be very difficult, and people who are confined to wheelchairs permanently should still be able to move around freely, so that is an active product being built by Tesla in Texas.” This builds upon what CEO Elon Musk said last year on X, which confirmed the company was working on accessible rides within its Robotaxi platform, which currently is confined to the Model Y. However, this vehicle is not necessarily geared toward wheelchair accessibility. That leaves a major gap in the autonomous ride-sharing program that Tesla is attempting to build; the company has been pretty clear that it does not want to complicate its manufacturing lines by bringing in a wide array of body styles. However, it seems necessary to have something larger that could help transport people to appointments when they cannot drive. WASHINGTON, D.C., July 13, 2026 — The 600,000-member IAM Union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) is urging the District of Columbia Council to amend the Autonomous Vehicle Deployment Authorization Amendment Act of 2026 (B26-0684), citing concerns about the legislation’s impact on workers, public transit, and the local economy. In a letter to Councilmember Charles Allen, who chairs the council’s Transportation and Education Committee, ahead of a Monday, July 13 public hearing, the IAM Union said it opposes the bill as written because of “the lack of guardrails to properly address the expected negative impacts to those such as existing ride-share drivers and the local economy.” The IAM Union represents approximately 600,000 active and retired members across North America, including tens of thousands of rideshare drivers. The IAM Union, along with SEIU, won a first-in-the-nation effort to represent 70,000 rideshare drivers in Massachusetts, and championed the successful passage of rideshare union legislation in Illinois. “The IAM welcomes innovation,” wrote IAM National Political and Legislative Director Hasan Solomon in a letter to DC Councilmember Charles Allen, who serves as Chair of the Council’s Transportation and Environment Committee. “Specifically, we welcome innovation that helps workers, not an unchecked innovation that threatens to upend thousands of jobs and disrupt a local economy.” The IAM Union joined SEIU 32BJ in raising concerns about the potential impact autonomous vehicles could have on workers throughout the transportation sector. Hanjin has launched South Korea’s first paid autonomous truck freight service, moving the technology from demonstration into revenue-generating freight operations on a fixed logistics route. The logistics company recently completed a pilot project with a 25-ton autonomous freight truck and began commercial operations after obtaining a paid freight transport permit from South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The vehicle is being used for line-haul freight movement, carrying parcel cargo between logistics facilities. The service operates on a one-way route of about 118 kilometers, or 73 miles, from Gunsan Port in North Jeolla Province through Hanjin’s Jeonju parcel terminal to the company’s Daejeon Mega Hub. The truck is expected to operate three times per week, with a trained safety operator remaining in the driver’s seat to respond if needed. Instead of attempting broad, open-ended deployment, Hanjin is using a repeatable route between known logistics nodes. That type of controlled line-haul operation can give autonomous truck developers, logistics companies, regulators, and fleet operators more consistent data on vehicle performance, route conditions, safety procedures, and operational fit. The operation was launched under the Saemangeum Autonomous Transport Commercial Vehicle Demonstration Support Infrastructure Development Project, which is overseen by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The deployment offers a practical example of how the technology may enter freight networks first: on defined routes, with known origin and destination points, under government approval, and with human oversight still in place.

The agency said it is seeing a “disturbing trend” of driverless cars entering active scenes and warned that some autonomous vehicles cannot safely detect and respond to those situations. “This is unacceptable. A former police chief called the situation dangerous. A Waymo spokesperson said at the time that safety is fundamental to what the company does. UN Advances Fully Autonomous Vehicle Framework While such cars aren’t on the public market yet, the United Nations established a safety-focused regulatory framework that's endorsed by the U.S. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe has established the first-ever regulatory framework for fully driverless Automated Driving Systems on an international scale. The commission’s World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations adopted the framework to establish “uniform international safety requirements and a common methodology for validating ADS-equipped vehicles.” The forum said it “aims to strengthen trust among governments, industry, and the public by ensuring that automated systems meet rigorous, outcome‑focused safety standards.” The regulation includes guidance on safety-management systems for manufacturers; testing environments that meet strict credibility criteria; evidence that the ADS “poses no unreasonable risk”; continuous performance monitoring and reporting; and safety-relevant data storage. Major automotive markets, including the U.S., have endorsed the regulation, according to the commission. The development comes just four months after U.S. Rep.
