Sweden may block EU approval of Tesla's self-<b>driving</b> software – report

Sweden’s transport authority has urged the European Union (EU) to reject Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software unless the carmaker removes its ability to exceed speed limits, Reuters reported. The advice came in an April letter from the Swedish Transport Administration (TRV) to the EU’s Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles (TCMV), obtained by the publication. According to a new study by JD Power, there’s a persistent gap between growing awareness of automation and rising expectations for safety. The company’s 2026 U.S. Mobility Confidence Index Study claims that “fundamental concerns around safety, performance and trust continue to slow adoption—and in some cases, deepen hesitation.” Even as people become more informed, their expectations are rising faster than their comfort. Today, fewer than 25 percent of respondents say they are comfortable riding in a fully self-driving vehicle, highlighting a persistent gap between awareness and readiness. Trust in self-driving vehicles remains highly situational. For instance, consumer have greater confidence in lower-risk, predictable scenarios, with 54 percent indicating high trust for activities such as food pickup vs. just 31 percent for transporting children, highlighting how trust declines as perceived risk increases. “Consumer awareness of automated vehicle technology is improving, but confidence still depends on proven safety, real-world performance and clear consumer value,” says Lisa Boor, director of auto benchmarking and mobility development at JD Power. “Consumers need to see that these systems can respond to unexpected situations, perform reliably in real-world conditions and clearly communicate what they are doing. Without that, broader adoption will remain limited.” According to Boor, personal safety is the leading concern, cited by 60 percent of respondents, followed by emergency handling (58 percent) and performance in challenging conditions such as bad weather or heavy traffic (51 percent). Only 16 percent are comfortable sharing the road with self-driving semi-trucks and 43 percent believe they are less safe than human-driven commercial vehicles. PHOENIX — Waymo said they are making software improvements to thousands of their vehicles after several drove into construction zones on highways in Phoenix and San Francisco in recent months. According to the Safety Recall Report submitted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 3,800 vehicles have been identified as needing safety upgrades, specifically when driving around construction zones. The report said that a Waymo autonomous vehicle (AV) drove past ramp closure signs and into pre-planned freeway construction zones in Phoenix on April 11. The same thing happened again five more times on Phoenix highways on April 19. The Arizona Department of Transportation confirmed these incidents happened on SR 51 during the ongoing pavement rehabilitation project. A day later, Waymo’s Field Safety Committee began meetings reviewing the events. The report also found seven incidents on May 19 when Waymo AVs drove between cones designating lane closures on a freeway in the San Francisco Bay Area "inappropriately prioritizing the avoidance of other freeway hazards and/or failing to recognize the construction zone.” The company, which began rolling out on freeways late last year, pulled its cars off the high-speed routes last month. “Waymo’s mission is to be the world’s most trusted driver, and the data shows that we’re making roads safer in the communities in which we operate,” the company said in a statement. "We identified an area of improvement regarding performance around freeway construction zones. Tesla Cybercab specs revealed, full <b>autonomy</b> still unclear

Back in February, when the first Tesla Cybercab rolled off the line at Tesla Gigafactory Texas, there was plenty of talk in media circles about what was to come. Now, Tesla’s certification documents submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reveal all that was previously under wraps. Though we now know a great deal more about the highly anticipated Cybercab, there are still some really important bits that are missing from these documents. First, let’s start with what we do know. Curb weight: 3,113 lb (1,412 kg). That’s roughly 700 lb (317 kg) lighter than the lightest Tesla Model 3 currently on sale. Not too shabby for a modern electric vehicle (EV). But then again, it’s important to remember the Cybercab’s only got two doors and two seats. In that regard, the Cybercab might just be a tad too heavy. For instance, the Toyota GR86, which has two (albeit tiny) seats at the back as well, still comes in at 2,811 lb (1,275 kg). Even a proper two-seater like the Porsche 718 Cayman is lighter, at around 3,058 lb (1,387 kg). Of course, a good chunk of that heft comes from the 680-lb (308 kg) Lithium-ion, single pack 326-V, 47.6-kWh battery. That unit should be enough to offer around 418 miles (673 km) of mixed range or 375.4 miles (603 km) of highway range alone. Keep in mind that those numbers are for the EPA’s Multi-Cycle Test (MCT). Out in the real world, expect the actual range to hover around the 300-mile mark. The battery is also listed for a recharge energy (AC from wall) of 53.365 kWh. Next up, the motor. The HUGIN Superior vehicle began operations in the northern Norwegian Sea earlier this month after being procured by the Norwegian Offshore Directorate (NOD) through funding provided by the Ministry of Energy in 2025. Plaintiffs in the class action say between 2018 and 2023, Rivian marketed its Gen 1 vehicles, known as the R1T and R1S as capable of level 3 autonomous driving through its Driver+ system. Under level 3 autonomous driving, or conditional automation, the vehicleâs autonomous driving system takes over its operations, including accelerating, braking and steering. While the driver can legally do other tasks in the vehicle, they must remain seated and prepared to take over if prompted, according to SAE International standards on autonomous driving.
