Autonomous vehicles will start getting traffic tickets on California streets SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Law enforcement officials in California will soon be able to issue traffic tickets to autonomous vehicles that violate the rules of the road, voiding an exemption that the tech-heavy cars have previously long enjoyed. New rules What we know: According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, the new rules will go into effect on July 1, and will allow law enforcement to give "notices of noncompliance" to the companies that operate driverless vehicles when their cars break traffic laws. The DMV added that repeated or severe instances of noncompliance by driverless car companies may result in "incremental enforcement actions," up to and including suspension or revocation of their licenses to operate. What they're saying: "California continues to lead the nation in the development and adoption of AV technology, and these updated regulations further demonstrate the state’s commitment to public safety," said DMV Director Steve Gordon. "These updates support the growth of the AV industry by enhancing public safety and transparency while adding additional accountability for AV manufacturers." A response to previous troubles Dig deeper: The new guidelines come after years of autonomous vehicles on Bay Area streets performing illegal or unsafe street maneuvers and posing safety risks to the public, seemingly with little that law enforcement officials could do to cite or stop their operations. Just 19% of people polled by Gallup said they would personally own or lease one, unchanged from Gallup’s previous survey in 2018. Gallup’s updated polling on autonomous vehicles, released Tuesday, showed about two-thirds of Americans expect to see driverless cars commonly roaming the roadways within the next decade, including 31% expecting them to become routine within five years. In the 2018 survey, 53% of people expected self-driving cars to become ubiquitous within a decade, including 19% expecting their widespread use within five years. Younger adults are more likely than older adults to say they’d own an autonomous vehicle. But even among adults under 50, just around one in five say they’d opt for a driverless car. “Yeah, I'm not surprised at all by these statistics,” said Jameson Wetmore, an associate professor in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society at Arizona State University. “And actually, if I was to invest in automated vehicles, I'd be pretty pleased about these statistics, because the goal is not to replace 100% of American cars next year with these things. Belief Rises That Driverless Cars Are Coming Soon; Adoption Still Low The share of Americans who believe driverless cars will be commonly used within five years has grown substantially since Gallup last asked this question in 2018. Currently, 31% of Americans expect this within five years, up 12 percentage points from 2018. Another 34% expect societal adoption within six to 10 years. That means nearly two-thirds of Americans now expect driverless cars to be common on U.S. roads within a decade. Yes, under 1 second. To achieve this record-breaking acceleration, the Dreame Nebula NEXT 01 Jet Edition will have “custom-built dual solid rocket boosters” that go beyond horsepower. Instead, the rocket boosters deliver 100 kilo-Newtons of force. Not much is known about this rocket-powered supercar. Dreame partnered with BNP Paribas to build a factory in Berlin for this thing, along with Dreame’s other over-the-top ideas. It’s apparently working on a Rolls-Royce Cullinan competitor.
