The model is freely downloadable by anyone on Earth, and no export order can reach it. The finding matters because the enforcement architecture behind the Fable 5 ban was designed for a different era of controlled technology. The Export Administration Regulations were built to track physical items — chips, weapons components, hardware with serial numbers, facilities subject to on-site inspection. A 750-billion-parameter model weight file hosted on Hugging Face has no serial number, no facility, and no provenance chain. The enforcement mechanism that made export controls effective for semiconductors is architecturally inapplicable to AI weights once distributed. That gap is now empirically visible in the benchmark scores. The Benchmark Findings That Changed the Argument Semgrep, a security firm that evaluates AI models for vulnerability detection, ran GLM-5.2 against a set of open-source models on its IDOR detection benchmark — the same dataset and prompt it has used to evaluate frontier coding agents. Ukraine Says Russian Intelligence Used Fake Support Texts to Steal Messaging Credentials

The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) said it, together with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), uncovered a long-running campaign orchestrated by Russian intelligence services to break into the messaging accounts of government officials, military personnel, politicians, and activists in Ukraine, Europe, and the U.S. The systematic cyber attacks aimed at stealing sensitive information from the victims, the agency added. "The goal of these 'hacks' is to gain access to sensitive military, political, and economic information exchanged by users, as well as to steal their personal data," the agency warned in a post shared on Telegram. To pull off the operation, the attackers send SMS messages that masquerade as the messaging platform's support bot and urge users to disclose their account credentials. The SSU noted that these attacks include not only organizations, officials or public figures, but also personal accounts belonging to Ukrainian nationals. It did not attribute the campaign to a specific hacking group. However, similar attack waves directly aimed at Signal and WhatsApp messaging app users have been attributed to Russian threat activity clusters tracked as Star Blizzard, UNC5792 (aka UAC-0195), and UNC4221 (aka UAC-0185). To counter the risk posed by such threats, it's advised to periodically review active messaging app sessions and log out of unknown connections, enable two-factor authentication, refrain from scanning QR codes received from unknown users, not disclose confirmation codes, PIN codes, passwords, and account recovery keys, and click on suspicious links or open files from unknown or dubious chats. The US government has allowed Anthropic to release its powerful Mythos AI model to select companies and organizations, revising license requirements after ordering an export block earlier this month in the wake of national security fears. Since the export ban earlier in June, “Anthropic has worked with the US government to address risks associated with the Covered Models,” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote to the company in a letter dated Friday. In light of progress in that work, Lutnick wrote, “I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model.” The letter does not include permission for Anthropic to release Fable, a less powerful version of Mythos. “We received notice from the US government that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a small group of cyber defenders and infrastructure providers,” Anthropic said in a statement. “We are working to provision the approved set of providers and restore their access to Mythos 5 as quickly as possible. Recent headlines around AI-driven vulnerability discovery have focused heavily on open-source software. That makes sense given the visibility of public codebases and the growing attention around AI systems identifying flaws in widely used open-source projects. But the cybersecurity industry is overlooking a much larger and potentially more disruptive shift. Proprietary software is unlikely to remain insulated from these same forces for very long. For years, many organizations quietly operated under the assumption that proprietary software carried less security risk simply because its source code was not publicly available. The logic was straightforward: if attackers could not easily inspect the code, discovering vulnerabilities would naturally become harder. That assumption was always somewhat flawed, but AI is seemingly going to render it almost entirely incorrect. Modern AI systems are becoming capable of reverse engineering software behavior, analyzing binaries, identifying code patterns, and uncovering exploitable conditions without requiring direct access to source code. What once demanded large amounts of manual expertise, specialized tooling and time, can increasingly be automated and accelerated. This changes the equation for proprietary software vendors in a very significant way. The cybersecurity industry is entering a period where AI-assisted vulnerability discovery may become commonplace across both open source and closed-source environments. The distinction between the two begins to matter far less when AI can efficiently analyze compiled applications at scale. In many ways, proprietary software vendors may actually face unique challenges as this transition accelerates. Open source communities, despite frequent criticism, often benefit from extensive peer review, public scrutiny, and rapid collaborative remediation. On Wednesday, Chinese cybersecurity firm 360 reportedly unveiled Tulongfeng, an AI tool it says can go head-to-head with Anthropic’s Mythos. That’s the cybersecurity-focused AI model that is reportedly so powerful, the Trump Administration has currently banned it and its more restricted version, Fable 5, from the hands of non-Americans. Earlier the same week Sakana AI, a Tokyo-based AI startup launched Fugu, a model named after the Japanese word for blowfish. The company says this frontier AI model “stands shoulder-to-shoulder with leading models like Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos Preview.” It is also designed for agents, with an ability to orchestrate access to other models though their APIs. The two new Asian model products come as the U.S. government’s ban drags on. It’s order that prevents Anthropic from global access to Mythos and Fable occurred two weeks ago. The Security Workforce Problem That Hiring Won't Fix

Most security leaders have done the logical thing with AI. They have automated alert queues, added machine learning to vulnerability-management pipelines, and integrated AI into the SIEM. The immediate benefits can be significant: response times can improve, routine work might move faster, and analysts may spend less time on tasks that do not require their full attention. The team structure, however, often stays the same. There is enough happening day to day without adding a workforce redesign to the list, and the existing model may not appear broken. The dashboard is improving. More work is moving through the function. The automation seems to be doing what it was intended to do. The disconnect usually emerges more slowly. Security leaders may see better volume and efficiency metrics while still feeling that the function is not meaningfully stronger. Senior analysts are spending more time reviewing machine-generated output than conducting the deeper investigative work their experience should enable. Less experienced analysts are moving through workflows shaped by automation without always gaining the exposure that helps them develop pattern recognition and independent judgment. The tools may be working exactly as designed. The issue is that many security teams are still organized around how the work looked before automation took on a significant share of the operational load.
