The broad release of the artificial intelligence (AI) model has been delayed due to security concerns. Anthropic claims Mythos is so good at coding that it can identify and exploit vulnerabilities in codebases that have existed undetected for years. To prevent its product from causing too much harm, Anthropic established Project Glasswing, an initiative that invites a handful of top enterprises to use Mythos to find and patch vulnerabilities across operating systems, web browsers, and other critical software before it is more widely released. While many view the improved capabilities of large language models as a major threat to cybersecurity stocks, the opposite may prove true -- at least for some companies. North Korean IT workers are stealing remote jobs—and Americans are helping them do it

This month, a federal judge in Massachusetts sentenced Kejia “Tony” Wang, a 42-year-old husband and father from New Jersey, to nine years in prison for spearheading what prosecutors described as an international fraud operation that placed North Korean IT workers in tech jobs at more than 100 American companies—including Fortune 500 firms. Over the course of three years, Wang’s network stole the identities of more than 80 Americans, forged fake social security cards and California driver’s licenses with photos of the North Korean operatives, filed false employment forms with the Department of Homeland Security, and doctored tax documents that went to the IRS and Social Security Administration. The scheme, in which the North Koreans got hired using Americans’ stolen identities, generated more than $5 million in salary payments from the victim companies. The subsequent fallout once it was uncovered caused at least $3 million in legal fees and computer clean-up costs at businesses in 28 states and the District of Columbia, court records show. Another participant in the scheme, Zhenxing Wang, 39—no relation to Kejia Wang, but a friend since both men arrived from China nearly 20 years ago—was sentenced to nearly eight years in prison. The court ordered both to forfeit $600,000, collectively, that they were paid from their part in the fraud. FAIRMONT – A Fairmont State University computer science degree program with an emphasis on cybersecurity has been named near the top in the United States for students going into the profession. Programs.com, a jobs resource for the cybersecurity market, bestowed the Fairmont school’s four-year degree, and that emphasis, with its No. 7 ranking in the nation. Deb Hemler, who is interim dean of the College of Science and Technology, said the recognition isn’t giving any academic or professional clues. “The honor affirms what we have long known,” she said. “It reflects the relentless dedication of our faculty to remain cutting-edge and innovative – while still providing a truly personal, educational experience.” While the four-year program offers a strong foundation in software development, there are also academic branches reaching into issues of ethics and other social responsibilities, Mahmood Hossain said. Defense strategies and vulnerability assessments are also part of the offerings, said Hossain, a computer science professor and department chair. “Students gain experience with industry-standard tools,” Hossain said. “They learn how software attacks occur and what strategies are used to identify and prevent vulnerabilities. Beware of phishing scheme via electronic invitations, <b>cybersecurity</b> experts warn

Opening an electronic invitation from a familiar name may seem harmless, but cybersecurity experts warn it could be a gateway for scammers to steal personal information and money. Alexis Moser, who runs a preschool, said she fell victim to a phishing scam after receiving what appeared to be an invitation from a friend known for hosting events. When she clicked the link, she was prompted to choose an email provider and log in. After entering her credentials and completing a multi-factor authentication request, the screen went blank. Within hours, Moser said she began receiving messages from contacts asking about an invitation she had supposedly sent. “And I was like, ‘Oh, this must have been a scam,’” she said. Moser warned her contacts not to respond and changed her email password. But days later, she discovered the impact had gone further. “When I checked the transaction history, there were three relatively small transactions that totaled $5,500,” she said. Cybersecurity experts said this type of attack is a phishing scheme designed to capture login credentials. “They will ask people to go to a page and will ask the people to authenticate,to put their credentials on the page— username and password,” said Pablo Molina, chief information officer at Drexel University. “But because the page is fake, any information we put in there will be stolen by the cybercriminals.” Molina said victims should act quickly if they suspect they’ve been targeted. “The most important part, particularly if any of our money or credit card transactions are at risk, is to contact your financial institutions,” he said. South Dakota seeking cybersecurity training from Department of Defense RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - The South Dakota Bureau of Information & Technology is looking to partner with the United States Department of Defense through its Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) Program to strengthen the state’s cybersecurity efforts. According to a public notice, the proposed project would focus on improving cyber resilience, running security assessments and aligning state systems with established best practices. The effort is being considered for Federal Fiscal Year 2027. The project would be based at the Sioux Falls One-Stop, with the option to expand to other locations if approved. The IRT Program provides hands-on training for military personnel while supporting public-sector needs. State officials are also asking for public input, particularly from contractors, labor unions, and residents who may have questions about military involvement. Comments can be submitted to the state’s cybersecurity office within 30 days of the notice. After that window, a lack of response will be considered no objection. If it moves forward, the partnership would mark a joint effort between state IT leaders and the Department of Defense to boost cybersecurity readiness across South Dakota.
