International travel in 2026 still sells the same fantasy of easy movement, but the paperwork behind many trips has become more demanding. Travelers now have to keep track of digital entry approvals, biometric border systems, online arrival forms, and country-specific visa rules that can change well before departure day. In many cases, the issue comes from travelers assuming a destination still works the way it did on their last trip, even when the rules have changed. That assumption can now cause real trouble at check-in, at the gate, or at passport control. Across Europe, the United Kingdom, Asia, and South America, governments have pushed ahead with systems that shift more responsibility onto the traveler before arrival. Some changes are already in force. Others are coming later this year and are important enough to build into trip planning now. The broader pattern shows that travel bureaucracy is becoming more digital, more pre-approved, and less forgiving of last-minute mistakes. For international trips in 2026, a valid passport is only part of what travelers need to check before departure. It also makes sense to confirm whether an online authorization, a digital arrival card, or a newly restored visa rule now stands between a boarding pass and the trip itself. The UK Now Requires Many Visitors To Get An ETA Before Travel The United Kingdom’s Electronic Travel Authorization is now one of the clearest examples of how pre-clearance has become part of ordinary travel planning. Santa Fe County commissioners have hit the brakes on a sheriff’s office request for a subscription to powerful software that can identify people from snapshots of their faces. They expressed concerns about the proposed initiative — not just about how the artificial intelligence technology might be used by county deputies, but also how the contractor might use the agency’s data. The proposed contract would make the software available to the sheriff’s office for a yearlong “pilot program” at a cost of $17,100. Commissioners asked the sheriff’s office at a recent meeting to provide more information about its plans for a facial recognition program, including its internal policy on such a program and the terms of use from the vendor, New York-based Clearview AI — which bills itself as having the “world’s largest known database” of facial images and the most advanced facial recognition algorithm. The company, whose controversial software identifies people from photos using an AI-trained algorithm, has faced fines and litigation over its collection of photos, even as it has secured contracts with government agencies large and small around the world. Civil rights advocates, including in New Mexico, have urged lawmakers to ban such technology due to the potential for wrongful arrests and threats to privacy. On April 15, 2026, Bloomington Police Chief Michael Diekhoff submitted a report on Bloomington’s use of Flock, followed by a memo from Mayor Thomson to the Bloomington Common Council. Both will be presented at the Council’s April 22 meeting. The evaluation was already underway before the Bloomington Common Council’s March 5, 2026, resolution calling for additional oversight of the City’s Flock cameras and requesting a report from BPD regarding access to Flock data. The review included consultation with Bloomington Police Department (BPD) leadership and investigative teams, the City’s legal team, Flock representatives, and community partners, and included an assessment of operational use, legal considerations, and documented case applications. As the City transitions away from Flock, it will evaluate other technologies and providers that better balance public safety needs with privacy protections, transparency, accountability, and public trust. As part of the review, Mayor Thomson directed immediate steps to narrow and govern the system’s use during the transition period. Access to Flock data will be limited to Bloomington Police Department personnel only. There will be no outside data sharing. The City’s Flock-related equipment includes 11 permanently mounted license plate reader cameras, four permanently mounted video cameras, and four mobile trailer systems equipped for license plate reading, video recording, and gunshot detection. Abstract Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality among women worldwide. Early and accurate detection is critical for improving survival rates and enabling effective treatment. This research proposes a fine-tuned Multi-Deep Neural Network model with Multiple Datasets (FT-MDNNMDs). The proposed system employs a hierarchical classification strategy, first distinguishing cancer from normal cases, and subsequently classifying cancer-positive cases into Stage II and Stage III categories. The model integrates data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and a private clinical image dataset collected from hospitals in Pakistan. Preprocessing techniques, including image normalization, filtering, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), are applied to enhance feature quality and reduce redundancy. Transfer learning and fine-tuning strategies are incorporated to further improve classification performance. The proposed model effectively distinguishes between benign and malignant tumors and accurately identifies stage II and stage III cases. Experimental results demonstrate that the fine-tuned MDNNMDs model achieves an accuracy of 99.57%, outperforming conventional machine learning algorithms such as Support Vector Machine (94.46%), Decision Tree (93.54%), and Naïve Bayes (91.22%). The model also achieved superior MCC (99.46%), F-score (99.57%), and recall (99.63%). In addition to algorithmic comparison, the performance of the proposed model is compared with existing breast cancer detection models, and it is revealed that the proposed model provides more accurate results than existing ones, with 1.5% to 3.0% better accuracy. Allbirds, the eco-friendly shoe brand co-founded by an ex-All White which found its way onto the feet of tech CEOs and movie stars before falling on hard times, is pivoting to artificial intelligence. The San Francisco-based company said it had signed a definitive agreement with an unnamed institutional investor for US$50 million (NZ$84.5 million) in financing to shift its business to AI infrastructure. It will also have a new name: NewBird AI. It plans to use the proceeds to purchase graphics processing units, known as GPUs. The transaction is expected to close during the second quarter of this year. The announcement comes more than two weeks after Allbirds sold its intellectual property and certain other assets and liabilities to American Exchange Group, a leader in accessories design, licensing and manufacturing, for US$39 million (NZ$67.8 million). The company owns such retail brands as Aerosoles, White Mountain, Jonathan Adler and Ed Hardy. That's a dramatic fall from the Allbirds' peak in valuation at US$4 billion in late 2021. Santa Fe County puts AI facial recognition plan on hold
SANTA FE, N.M. – Santa Fe County commissioners tabled a $17,000 plan for the sheriff’s office to test Clearview AI facial recognition technology for one year.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office brought the proposal to the Board of County Commissioners on March 31. The agency asked for $17,000 for a one-year pilot program using Clearview AI facial recognition.

Executive summary Three consecutive administrations have made adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) across the U.S. federal government a priority. Most recently, the Trump administration’s AI Action Plan highlighted AI’s potential to “help deliver the highly responsive government the American people expect and deserve.” To assess the current state of AI adoption across the federal government, this report draws on AI use case inventories from 2023 to 2025, federal jobs data, OMB memoranda, request for information submissions, and interviews with current and former federal technologists across eight agencies. While the scope and pace of AI adoption accelerated significantly over the past three years, AI use across the federal government remains concentrated among a handful of large agencies. Workforce capacity constraints, a risk-averse culture, procurement and funding challenges, and low public trust in AI systems slow adoption efforts. To bolster responsible AI adoption, the federal government could expand support for technical talent and AI literacy across agencies; continue to address the structural barriers in procurement, regulation, and budgeting that hinder technology modernization more broadly; and foster public trust through stronger transparency practices, improved use case inventories, and a focus on high-impact, positive applications that demonstrably improve how government serves the American people. Abstract The primary driver or cause of cognitive decline and stroke is Cerebral Small Vessel Disease (CSVD), which currently requires neuroimaging tests, which are expensive to obtain and inaccessible in standard clinical settings. Low-cost retinal imaging techniques offer non-invasive assessments that mirror the condition of the brain’s small blood vessels (cerebral microvasculature). State-of-the-art diagnostic methods currently have no accessible, non-invasive, or cost-effective solution to identify CSVD at its earliest stages through visual assessment of retinal biomarkers. This study presents the Retino-Neuro Vision Transformer (RNV-T) framework as a proposed method to detect CSVD utilizing multimodality retinal imaging. The model system comprises five fundamental phases, beginning with Local Vascular Extraction (LVE), followed by Global Transformer-based Encoding (GTE), then proceeding to Graph-Based Relational Learning through Graph-based Convolutional Attention Network (G-CAN) before implementing Local-Global Attention Fusion (LGAF) as well as Optimized training procedures to obtain precise micro-vascular abnormality detection. The diagnostic performance of this model reaches 98.8% accuracy and shows 97.4% sensitivity along with 98.1% specificity, surpassing previous detection approaches. This diagnostic system represents a major leap forward in neuro-ophthalmic care because it enables early prediction of CSVD while expanding medical accessibility through retinal scans that are easy to conduct. In Response to the Minister of Agriculture’s Recognition, IPB University Strengthens Its Contribution to National Seed Production Through New High Yielding Rice Varieties Recently, the IPB 9G rice seed variety received recognition from the Minister of Agriculture. As a tangible show of support, the Ministry of Agriculture purchased IPB 9G rice seeds worth Rp250 billion. In response, IPB University reaffirmed its readiness to meet the challenge set by the Minister by continuing to develop high-yielding rice varieties. A “Rice Seed Production Field Meeting” was held at the IPB Experimental Rice Field, Kp Sawah Baru, Babakan, Dramaga, Bogor (4/13). Rector Dr Alim Setiawan Slamet stated that IPB University continues to encourage breeders to produce innovative, high-yielding rice varieties that are adaptive and productive. “We strongly support exceptional breeders like Prof Hajrial to continue developing high-yielding varieties, particularly rice seeds. Alhamdulillah, IPB has produced 15 high-yielding varieties, ranging from IPB 1R to IPB 15S, whose seeds we are harvesting today,” he said. He added that IPB University’s high-yielding varieties are now widely accepted by the public and used on nearly 110.000 hectares of land in Indonesia. In fact, he noted, IPB University has been challenged by the government to develop varieties with yields of up to 15 tons per hectare. “We will strengthen collaboration, both domestically and internationally, to address these challenges in order to support national food security,” he added. A 92-year-old woman says she was left with just $2 to her name after a scammer posing as a tradie drained her of her life savings. Last February, Cecily said a man claiming to be a tradesman doing odd jobs knocked on her door offering his services to "fill his fridge". "He offered to clean my gutterings out and just check the roof for some growing moss," she told Seven Sharp's Hilary Barry. "I said, 'Oh yes, go ahead. No problem'." She agreed to pay him $200 for his work. The pensioner said she was then told the scammer's car had broken down and he needed $800 to fix it. "It was all a big lie." "That’s it – he’s drained me dry. He’s gone." When she realised the money was gone, Cecily said she felt "so ashamed of myself”. "I just felt… I got sucked in." The scammer was sent to prison over the incident. After her ordeal, Cecily’s daughter Wendy was put in charge of her bank account. "That’s been really tough, you know? Just emotionally – knowing that somebody just took that money," Wendy said. "Why does he think he’s so entitled that he can just come and more or less groom [victims], get their trust, and then take all their life savings?" When Kimberlee Williams accompanied her daughter to an Oklahoma military base in 2021, security officers learned that she was wanted for bank fraud in Maryland. Facial-recognition software had concluded Williams was the person responsible for impersonating individuals in Maryland and withdrawing thousands of dollars from their bank accounts. Now Williams is demanding an apology from police, as well as reforms to prevent others from being wrongly identified in criminal cases. Williams’ ordeal illustrates the flaws in commonly used facial-recognition technology — and, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, the mistaken belief by many law enforcement agencies that a match in the technology indisputably verifies a person is a wanted criminal. “But this kind of ‘verification’ is worthless,” the ACLU and its Maryland chapter said in letters sent Tuesday to three Maryland police departments on Williams’ behalf. “It merely confirms that the technology did what it is designed to do: find someone who looks similar to the suspect, but is often innocent.” Mistaken identity Williams was riding along with her daughter, a DoorDash driver, for a delivery to Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma, when security officers performed a routine ID check before allowing the women onto the base. In Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Russia, the roof collapsed in one of the workshops at the Gagarin Aviation Plant (KnAAP), which manufactures the Su-35 and Su-57 fighter jets. Satellite images of the aftermath were published by the OSINT resource Exilenova+. The collapse occurred as a result of a fire that broke out on the night of April 11-12, as Militarnyi previously reported. The published images show damage to one of the plant’s production buildings — several sections of the roof have collapsed. The collapse occurred in the area of production workshops responsible for manufacturing key aircraft components. This refers to Plant No. 46, which is a crucial link in the production process and specializes in manufacturing parts from polymer composite materials (PCM) for the Su-57. In particular, the plant produces the following: Plant No. 46 is also the important part for the serial production of the Su-35S, however, its damage has a significantly greater impact on the production of the former, since the number of composite parts in the Su-57’s structure is many times greater than in the Su-30MK2 and Su-35S. Russian sources have reported that the labor intensity of manufacturing a complete set of composite parts for the Su-57 in this shop has increased eightfold compared to the Su-35S. According to analysts’ estimates, damage to or destruction of the workshop would directly halt or significantly slow down the assembly of Su-57 airframes, and cooperation with ONPP “Tekhnologiya” would only be able to partially compensate for this, and with a significant time lag. A Timaru café's phone has been ringing off the hook, but unfortunately, many aren't seeking a top-notch toastie - instead, they're after a doctor. By Rachel Graham of RNZ Google's Gemini Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool had been offering up the phone number for Sopheze Coffee Lounge when people searched for Timaru Hospital. Sopheze Coffee Lounge manager Vanessa Keen said the problem started about six weeks ago. Café staff noticed a big increase in hang-ups and wrong numbers. "People would say 'sorry, wrong number' and hang up or people ringing... asking for radiology. I had one yesterday who wanted to confirm his appointment with me," Keen said. "We get about 15 to 20 phone calls a day." It took a couple of weeks to figure out the problem, she said. "Then it clicked ... I said to this lady on this phone 'where did you find this number?' and she said 'Google, I googled Timaru Hospital and this is what came up'. I asked her to send the screenshots through to me and I sent them through last week to the local health board." It appeared the correct number came up if people searched for "Timaru Hospital", but those searching "Timaru Hospital phone number" got a direct line to Sopheze. The frequent calls were a unneeded disruption but Keen said she also worried getting the wrong number would add to people's stress when they needed to contact the hospital. Health New Zealand - South Canterbury posted on social media on Monday alerting people to the problem and asked Google to fix the issue. While not yet officially announced, a report came out last year suggesting that the company wants to develop an always-on AI system with the ability to recognize people’s faces and other details from your life, like where you left your keys. The story was amplified earlier this year when The New York Times reaffirmed Meta’s rumored plans.
