Following more than ten years of preparation and a 180-day roll-out phase, the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) went live in April 2026 in all 29 Schengen states. A significant number of these countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, rely on border control technology from secunet. This technology ensures seamless integration with the EES, captures biometric facial images and automatically verifies travellers’ identities. Experience gained by the Czech Border Police during live operations confirms that secunet’s technology minimises waiting times for travellers despite the more complex EES processes. This is achieved through speedy automated border control systems and self-service kiosks where third-country nationals can enter their data in advance. The Czech Republic is one of the few Schengen states to have opted for the immediate roll-out of full-scale operations. This roll-out took place as early as October 2025, meaning that reliable data on live operations is already available. With an average processing time of 24 seconds per person, the automated secunet easygate border control systems ensure a swift departure for third-country nationals. At the same time, the secunet easykiosk self-service kiosks are successfully fulfilling their role in speeding up the process: they relieve the burden on border control officers by shifting registration and data collection from the counters to the kiosks. In this way, the additional workload resulting from the EES has been effectively mitigated. “We were well prepared for the EES roll-out, and the launch went very smoothly,” says plk. Mgr. DHS looks to consolidate aging biometric examination tools The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is exploring the acquisition of a multimodal examination platform that would allow government biometric specialists to review fingerprints, facial images, irises, and latent prints from within a single integrated environment. A Request for Information (RFI) issued by DHS’s Office of Biometric Identity Management (OBIM) seeks details from technology companies about available software, integration approaches, and costs. The notice is for market research and does not constitute a solicitation or commit the government to making a purchase. OBIM operates the department’s central biometric identification services, providing identity information to federal, state, and local government personnel who need to determine who they have encountered and whether the person may pose a security or public safety risk. Although much of the initial matching process is automated, human examiners remain necessary when biometric searches produce uncertain results, when records contain errors, or when candidate lists require expert adjudication. OBIM describes its Biometric Support Center as the largest biometric examiner operation in the U.S. government and says it supports mission critical services around the clock. The center, however, continues to rely on several separate and increasingly outdated examination systems. One internally developed tool is more than 20 years old and supports only ten-print fingerprint work, according to the RFI. DHS now wants to determine whether commercial technology can consolidate those functions without tying OBIM to a particular biometric matching vendor. Given the phrase "pervert glasses" has been gaining traction online in reference to the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, all of those moves from Apple make sense. After several weeks of discussions that saw dozens of residents speak out against their use, the Stoughton City Council voted unanimously at its Tuesday, July 28 meeting to cancel its two-year contract with Flock Safety cameras. Stoughton is the latest Dane County municipality to cancel a camera surveillance contract with Flock. The city had a contract to lease cameras that had been set to expire in December of 2027. City attorney Rick Manthe said the agreement does not allow for early termination, so the city would need to buy out the remainder of the contract. The city’s data would then be deleted and the cameras disabled. On Thursday, Mayor Tim Swadley told the Hub the cameras are now disabled. Stoughton Police Chief Brandon Hill said at the meeting that representatives from Flock told him the city could not get a full refund on the two-year contract, nor a termination of the second year at no cost. “We’ve already paid the $12,500 (for the first year) we would pay the remaining $12,500 (for the second year), they would come and get their cameras, deactivate accounts, and it would be done,” he said. Residents spoke again Monday about concerns about the company’s use of facial recognition software, violating privacy rights, and the possibility of data being misused by a third party used by the company. In a presentation to the council last month, Hill said the department has been using Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras since 2019, and asked council members to allow the department to continue using them. He said the department formerly had a contract with a company that was going out of business, so they switched to Flock, a competitor. DeFlock is a community-powered project that maps reported camera locations using public submissions and data from OpenStreetMap. Because the map relies partly on crowdsourced information, it may miss some cameras or include locations that have changed. Flock Safety cameras account for about 83% of the mapped total. California has the largest number of mapped readers, with more than 16,000. Major clusters appear around Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Cost of AI fraud has fallen by a hundredfold: Unico, Liminal report A new study from Liminal and Unico offers yet another look at the new era of identity fraud, in which isolated incidents have evolved into a “coordinated, economically rational network amplified by generative artificial intelligence.” According to the Identity Fraud Intelligence Report: Trends and Insights, sophisticated fraud assisted by generative AI already accounts for 23 percent of fraud attacks globally, leading to losses exceeding $400 billion per year. Intermediate-level forgeries using manipulated image or video streams – including basic injection attacks – account for 45.8 percent of cases. Hybrid methods combining deepfakes, injection methods and sophisticated physical manipulation represent 23.3 percent of the total. Deepfakes cause average losses exceeding $280,000 annually, and nearly 20 percent of cases result in losses above $500,000. Conversely, the cost of mounting attacks has fallen more than a hundredfold, as generative AI tools become ever more freely available online via subscription models. Czech police say secunet cuts border processing times under EES Having deployed biometric technology from Germany’s secunet in adapting to the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES), border police in the Czech Republic have confirmed that it minimizes waiting times for travellers in spite of the more complex EES processes. According to a release, secunet’s automated border control systems integrate seamlessly with the EES, capturing biometric facial images at self-service kiosks to automatically verify travellers’ identities. Scientists created an AI system that uses facial recognition and real-time, touchscreen testing to automate cognitive studies of capuchin monkeys in the wild. The American Journal of Primatology published a proof-of-concept for the novel method - dubbed CapuchinAI - developed by researchers at Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology. The article provides a roadmap for the first scalable, systematic way to evaluate and monitor the cognitive abilities of wild primates. The primate brain didn't evolve in a lab, it evolved in complex, competitive environments. Yet primate cognition is rarely studied in the wild because the experimental control needed to measure cognition is difficult in unpredictable environments." Marcela Benítez, Emory assistant professor of anthropology and senior author of the paper "CapuchinAI" integrates a compact, battery-powered computing system into a field-research platform. The system identifies an approaching monkey, presents a learning task tailored to that individual on a touchscreen, and automatically delivers a food reward if the monkey performs the task correctly. Field tests of the prototype in the Taboga Forest Reserve of Costa Rica found that CapuchinAI identifies individual capuchins with 97% accuracy, following training on still images and videos. Wild capuchins rapidly habituated and learned touchscreen-reward associations, demonstrating that the system provides a scalable field method for cognitive testing, while also mapping individual differences across tasks. Team Timeless developed an AI-powered application that uses image recognition to help archaeologists identify stone artifacts. That response did not support 21 of the recommendations, including an option for later trade at retail and supermarkets in party suburbs, staggering exits from clubs to enhance safety, and extending trading hours on Good Friday and Christmas. The use of facial recognition software to replace ID scanners and deal with long lines would also be ignored, with Youth Minister Sam O’Connor, whose department handled the report, deeming the proposal unsafe. “It’s our view that that technology is not at the point where it can replace the current system,” he said. The government’s response, a 22-page action plan, has a strong focus on existing Safe Night Precincts. It will offer liquor licensing discounts to live music venues and alter noise complaints law to give music venues a fighting chance. Under a new noise complaint framework, venues must get five other complaints before the problem is taken seriously. Noise limits will also be reviewed, and a process for special events licensing hours – like those seen during the World Cup for Socceroos games – will be streamlined. The camera vans came to Oxford city centre and Bicester town centre on May 19 and 29 respectively.
Data released by Thames Valley Police showed that a total of 62,929 faces were captured and a total of 7,521 people were spotted who are on the police's 'watchlist' during an average of three hours at the two Oxfordshire spots.
