New DIY passport photo process to be rolled out

The U.S. State Department is developing a new way to get a passport photo. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the department is coming up with a more streamlined process that would allow applicants to take and upload passport photos using their computers or photos, USA Today reported. The agency already has a process to allow people to upload photos on their own, but they must meet the current State Department requirements. Click here to see the regulations. The new platform will use built-in real-time facial recognition to speed up the process, allowing a person to do the photo on their own, but they won’t have to go to a third party to get it done. “You should be able to take that picture on that device as opposed to going somewhere. Now, the CVS people, of course, hate this, and the Walgreens and all those other places,” Rubio said during an event rolling out a new, commemorative passport this month. “But you’ll be able to take your picture from that device and be able to have it in real time, through our security system, verify the facial ID.” Rubio also promised more changes to the process for easier passport applications. © 2026 Cox Media Group

At APIC 2026 in Nashville, Tennessee, 2 poster presentations demonstrated that effective infection prevention depends on more than following established protocols. The recognition follows the HSP Award for Best New Technology 2026, which Toppan Security won earlier this year for its Chroma ID printing technology, which is also used in Argentina’s ePassport. Toppan Security shared the credit for the Best New Passport award at High Security Printing Latin America with its local partner Ipesa in a recent LinkedIn post, and hailed the new passport as part of “a full transformation of Argentina’s national identity infrastructure.” Chroma is a new laser engraving technology that the company says eliminates the traditional trade-off between photo-realistic color and high resolution in portrait images, launched in late-2025. Toppan notes on its website that 90 percent of the passports currently in use still have black and white facial photos. The result of bringing full color directly to polycarbonate identity documents with Chroma is that they are fully ICAO-compliant and suitable for airport face biometrics checks, but also give border control officials a more detailed portrait image for visual comparisons. Figures Abstract Industrial anomaly detection (IAD), aiming at automatically identifying abnormal patterns that deviate from the normal manufacturing process, plays a critical role in ensuring product quality and equipment safety for intelligent manufacturing systems. In this work, we delve into exploring the generalized and subtle-pattern awarded defect detection. We also propose a visual expert-guided multi-scale anomaly detection method. As the extracted regions often exhibit subtle and vague features that hamper the precise and reliable detection, we leverage the established super-resolution technique to enhance the spatial resolution and recover fine-grained details. It facilitates more discriminative defect representation and improves the model’s capacity at localize anomalies at finer scales. The multi-scale fusion module is constructed by the graph attention network. It aggregates the suspicious regions across different scales by modeling their inter-scale dependencies and contextual relationships. As it dynamically weights and localities those features, it preserves both the micro irregularities and macro structural deviations, hence offering comprehensive anomaly information. Extensive experiments under zero-shot and few-shot settings were conducted on several public datasets. The results demonstrate that the proposed method consistently outperforms existing mainstream approaches in both image-level and pixel-level anomaly detection, achieving pixel-level values of 98.6% and 98.1% under the 4-shot setting on two major benchmarks, and 94.6% under the zero-shot setting, with particularly strong capability in detecting subtle defects on fine-grained textures. Yet, even as Meta touts the new safeguard this week, the company is also pushing products and features that ask users to surrender more of their privacy to the company. Whether that’s training its AI on your images, enabling AI features using your personal content unless you opt out, or exploring ways to continuously record or use biometric facial recognition, Meta’s vision of the future seems to always depend on collecting more of your personal data. Buckinghamshire Council’s communities boss has hailed the use of live facial recognition cameras in the Eden Centre. Conservative cabinet member for communities, Steve Bowles, said he was “delighted” to support the initiative by Thames Valley Police, which deployed facial recognition vans at the centre in High Wycombe. He said the technology had “enjoyed success” during its two previous uses in the town. “Most notably, it includes the arrest of an individual who was outstanding for a number of years for violent offences,” Mr Bowles said. “Ultimately the purpose is to supplement officers’ ‘human’ recognition skills with that of technology, to assist us in reducing the number of outstanding offenders at large in our community.” Live Facial Recognition works by capturing images of faces and creating a biometric template from key features. This template is then compared to a watch list of individuals known to police, and if a potential match is found, officers are alerted in real-time. Thames Valley Police currently use two types of facial recognition technology. Live Facial Recognition is used for real-time identification, while Retrospective Facial Recognition is applied after an incident to match still images from CCTV or other sources against the Police National Database. The force does not currently use Operator Initiated Facial Recognition, which involves officers taking photos on mobile devices to be compared against a predetermined watch list to assist an officer in identifying the person. Thames Valley Police said that the use of facial recognition technology is carefully balanced with privacy, legal, and ethical considerations. The use of the technology however had not been welcomed by everyone, campaign groups such as Big Brother Watch strongly oppose the technology. The standard procedure for that determination is endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration, or EBUS-TBNA, a minimally invasive technique that uses a flexible scope and ultrasound imaging to sample lymph nodes in the chest without open surgery. It is well-established, widely performed, and highly effective when performed by appropriately trained clinicians – though its diagnostic performance can vary. Published research has associated variability in EBUS-TBNA diagnostic outcomes with operator experience and procedural volume, among other factors. When results are inconclusive, patients return for repeat procedures, extending uncertainty in a disease where the speed and accuracy of cancer staging matters. Addressing that variability is a key research question at the centre of a new McMaster University led clinical trial now underway, with University Health Network’s Toronto General Hospital as a key site. Meta said it has developed a tamper-detection feature for its AI-powered smart glasses to prevent users from secretly recording video of people around them. In an announcement highlighting frequently asked questions about the smart glasses, Meta responded to concerns about users developing ways to disable the device’s LED light, which indicates it is in record mode. But a workaround to disable the light was quickly developed last year, leading to a cottage industry of people who offer to remove the privacy-protecting feature for a fee.
