Overt Live Facial Recognition technology is being rolled out to prevent and detect crime, find wanted and dangerous criminals, safeguard vulnerable people, such as children, and to protect people from harm, keeping the community safe. The technology involves the deployment of visible facial recognition cameras, mounted on or positioned in the vicinity of a marked police vehicle in designated public spaces. The cameras detect faces in real time and compares them against a strictly controlled alert list consisting only of lawfully held police images. These may include reportable offenders, people with outstanding warrants, those suspected of serious offences, missing people, and individuals subject to lawful restrictions, such as PEP orders, or welfare concerns. The technology will be used to identify convicted child sex offenders who are prohibited from being near children. It gives WA Police the capability for timely and quality responses, with real-time alerts identifying high risk individuals, resulting in the swift apprehension of those offenders who are breaking the law. The technology can also be used to ensure vulnerable members of our community can be assisted and given prompt and adequate care and returned to safety. It would assist in locating a missing person who police and loved ones hold welfare concerns for. Images of community members who are not on the alert list are automatically pixelated in real time and are not saved. There is no record-keeping of this data. Advancements and innovation in technology including through initiatives such as facial recognition, present significant opportunities for law enforcement agencies, with community safety the number one priority. This approach has been successfully implemented in other jurisdictions around the world, resulting in improved community safety. Western Australia has become the first Australian state to surveil public spaces using live facial recognition technology (FRT), and while WA Police has said the move will “increase the freedoms and the privacy of our community,” the head of Electronic Frontiers Australia (EFA) emphatically disagrees. “What we are talking about is a massive breach of human rights and privacy, and one which could increase in scope and scale in the absence of strong laws to limit the use of biometric technologies in public and private spaces,” EFA chair John Pane said in a 23 June statement. “The use of real-time biometric image matching in public spaces by WA Police really is the cherry sitting on top of the surveillance state cake.” The rollout of FRT will involve marked police vans patrolling crowded areas and large events, scanning the faces of members of the public in real time. Under West Australian law, biometric information is protected via a public-private sector framework, which means such information – such as facial scans – requires strict consent for its collection, as well as mandatory privacy impact assessments. The EFA, however, contends that since the new WA Information Privacy Principles won’t come into effect until July, WA Police has rolled out the new technology in an effort to avoid looming privacy regulations. Britain’s biggest police force is expanding its use of static live facial recognition cameras to London’s West End and Soho. The Metropolitan Police will roll out the devices, which attach to street furniture and are monitored remotely, to the areas in central London by the end of the year. This follows a six-month pilot in Croydon, south London, between October 2025 and May 2026, which led to 173 arrests, including one woman sought for over two decades. Further deployment across the capital is planned for next year. Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said: “Facial recognition is one of the most revolutionary technology advances in policing in recent years. “Public confidence in this is clear – around 80 per cent of Londoners support its use. That backing reflects a simple truth: it works. “We have already seen the impact in Croydon, where a six-month pilot delivered over 170 arrests, a reduction in crime and a significant fall in violence against women and girls. “All these results with only one false alert among hundreds of thousands of people. “The technology supports officers to target wanted criminals and registered sex offenders. Crucially it is supporting officers – not replacing them. “Now we’re taking that capability further. Canada and Australia have signed a $2.5-billion export agreement to deliver an over-the-horizon radar capability aimed at strengthening Canada’s Arctic surveillance. The agreement moves Canada’s Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar (A-OTHR) program into the delivery phase, advancing Ottawa’s goal of achieving initial operational capability by December 2029. Work is scheduled to begin in July 2026. Over-the-horizon radars use high-frequency radio waves reflected off the ionosphere to detect and track airborne and maritime targets thousands of kilometers away, overcoming the line-of-sight limitations imposed by the Earth’s curvature. Under the deal, BAE Systems Australia will provide technology derived from Australia’s Jindalee Operational Radar Network, which offers wide-area surveillance at ranges of up to 3,000 kilometers (1,864 miles). Once operational, the A-OTHR system will provide Canada with long-range detection and tracking of airborne and maritime threats, enhancing situational awareness and extending warning and decision-making time for the defense of Canadian and North American airspace. “This project is part of a broader effort to build an integrated Arctic surveillance and communications network that will strengthen Canada’s ability to monitor, understand, and respond to activity in the Arctic,” Canadian Secretary of State (Defence Procurement) Stephen Fuhr said. “We are working with trusted partners to modernize our continental defences while ensuring meaningful industrial and technological benefits for Canadians.” Technological Cooperation, Employment Generation BAE Systems Australia will partner with Canadian firms to develop domestic expertise in over-the-horizon radar technology and strengthen Canada’s defense industrial base. Inside Utah's facial recognition system: How police use the technology SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Utah law enforcement agencies are increasingly using facial recognition technology to identify criminal suspects, but state law limits its use to specific circumstances and imposes some of the strictest safeguards in the nation. Under Utah law, facial recognition technology may only be used for certain law enforcement purposes, including felony investigations, violent crimes, threats to human life, and efforts to identify deceased, incapacitated or at-risk individuals. The technology recently came under scrutiny in the case of Brad Johnston, who faced a felony charge related to the vandalism of an Uber driver's vehicle after a facial recognition match linked him to the case. Johnston maintained he was not involved. “The only way I can describe it was just terrifying,” Johnston said. MORE: Facial recognition AI misidentifies Utah man in felony vandalism case The match was generated from surveillance video taken from inside the Uber ride, but Johnston insisted investigators had identified the wrong person. After months of court proceedings, the case was ultimately dismissed. According to the most recently available data, Utah law enforcement agencies submitted 1,191 facial recognition requests between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025. Of those, 706 resulted in probable matches, a rate of about 59%. State law requires all facial recognition requests to be processed through the Utah Department of Public Safety. Tanner Jensen, chief of investigations for the department, said requests from law enforcement have increased over the past five years. Jensen said the system will analyze biometric data and measurements and two people manually review each image submitted for comparison. Western Australia police will soon become the first law enforcement agency in Australia to deploy live facial recognition technology in what privacy advocates have labelled an “outrageous overreach”. The WA Police Force plans to trial a marked police van outside major events and in crowded public areas, scanning people as they walk past. The technology will compare live images with a database of individuals with outstanding arrest warrants, registered child sex offenders and missing persons. The live images will be matched with a database of 4,000 people. If a match is detected, the live image will be kept and an alert will be sent to nearby police officers who will confirm the individual’s identity. While a number of police forces around the country already use facial recognition technologies to analyse already obtained footage, it marks the first time police in Australia have used a live version of the technology. ‘Terrifying overreach’ The rollout has also drawn strong criticism from privacy advocates. The Metropolitan police is to expand its use of live facial recognition (LFR) technology, first into London’s West End by Christmas and then into a further six areas next year. The new cameras will be fixed, and could be attached to street furniture such as lamp-posts. Critics said the new plans mean tens of thousands of people will be forced into a “digital police lineup”. LFR scans the faces of those people passing its camera’s lens, and then compares it with a watchlist of wanted suspects. The Met has been trialling the technology and using vans deployed for a short time in some areas. It also used LFR via a static camera in Croydon, south London as an experiment, which Britain’s biggest force says was a success. Later this year new static cameras will be deployed in London’s West End and Soho, which have some of the highest crime rates in the British capital. The Met says the cameras will move location as officers spot crime trends. In 2027 it plans to place static LFR cameras in six further areas, and hopes local councils will contribute to the cost. The Met insists any decision to arrest following an alert on its LFR system is made by a human being. Live facial recognition is controversial because it predominantly surveils the faces of the innocent when they walk past the system’s cameras. Furthermore the algorithm used to power it can discriminate against black people. Police and government, which back its expanded use, say the civil right issues are minimal, if they exist at all. The Met has turned down the sensitivity of its algorithm and says that nearly eliminates the bias. Ministers and police believe LFR’s crime fighting potential is huge, also freeing up officer time at a time of financial strain.

MISSOULA — The City of Missoula is poised to vote on whether or not to purchase new security cameras for parks and aquatics on Monday night, with concerns previously being raised about the cameras and AI facial recognition technology.

The Missoula City Council has the final say on the purchase of various Verkada security cameras from Pine Cove Consulting, a Bozeman-based IT company.
The purchase agreement was initially meant to be completed last week, although council members, alongside community members, raised concerns about the AI facial recognition abilities of the cameras.
Montana has strict privacy laws restricting local government entities from using such AI facial recognition technology, although law enforcement is largely exempt from these laws.

A proposal before the Monroe County Legislature would require businesses including grocery stores, restaurants, and banks to disclose to customers if they use facial recognition technology. The legislation, if adopted, would also prohibit the sale or exchange of biometric data for any reason and require any business that collects the data to destroy it within two years. It does not, however, ban the use of the technology outright. The legislation is sponsored by Democratic legislators including Rachel Barnhart, Ricky Frazier, John Baynes, Nazish Jeffery, and Linda Hasman. Legislature committees are discussing the measure this week. They will decide whether to forward it to the full Legislature for consideration at its July meeting. “Biometric data is fundamentally different from video surveillance, because what it does is it scans your face, and it creates a mathematical template that is then stored, and they can create a profile of you based upon your face,” Barnhart said. “What they then do with that data, we don't know yet.” Barnhart noted an array of concerns with the collection of biometric data, including the potential for a more complex form of identity theft. That concern is also outlined in the proposal. “(Biometric information) is derived from a person’s physical or biological characteristics and may be difficult or impossible to replace if compromised,” the legislation reads. “Unlike a password or credit card number, biometric data is immutable.” The legislation comes as state and local governments grapple with how to regulate the use of biometric surveillance. Last month, Erie County became the first county in the state to outright ban the collection of biometric information, including faces, fingerprints, irises, or voices. RealSense unveils AI-native depth camera with face detection roadmap RealSense has shown off the D585 Pro at Automate 2026, a new depth camera aimed at improving AI‑driven perception systems for robots. Robotics is driving edge‑based sensing, with these cameras also offering biometrics uses. The device is described as an “AI‑native” platform built around a custom Gen 5 system‑on‑chip that fuses depth sensing, image processing and on‑camera AI inference in a single unit. RealSense says primary use cases include humanoid robots, robotic navigation, industrial automation systems and robotic arms performing inspections. The D585 Pro’s architecture mirrors the sensing pipelines used in advanced identity systems. High‑resolution depth, dual RGB, IR projection and on‑device AI accelerators feature in many biometric stacks. RealSense is leaning into a software‑defined model as the D585 Pro ships with on‑camera depth processing. Person detection is in beta. Planned SDK releases will add visual‑inertial odometry, occupancy grid generation and face detection to existing hardware. The approach of deploying once and upgrading continuously follows what is being increasingly seen in biometric devices. Companies are often using firmware‑level AI improvements rather than new sensors, selling the update as avoiding friction. While RealSense is targeting robotics, the ability to run person detection and face detection directly on the camera means biometrics uses are possible independent of the robot or via a robotic system. The need for accuracy and versatility and intelligence is leading to convergence. The D585 Pro delivers more than twice the depth quality of previous RealSense models, enabling the perceiving of fine‑grained detail at distances under 15cm — a range where traditional depth sensors struggle. ROBOTICS AND AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE: Vision-Based AI at the Tactical Edge a Force Multiplier By David Guffey iStock illustration In Afghanistan and Iraq, white Toyota Hilux trucks were synonymous with the Taliban and many other terrorist groups that U.S. and coalition forces pursued daily. Ubiquitous and covered in dust, nearly indistinguishable from thousands of identical vehicles on the same roads, complex hyperspectral sensors were used to look for minute spectral differences. Sensors were flown, data gathered and analyzed, and over time, automated algorithms developed to provide a level of autonomy and precision. But the challenge existed not just in finding a truck, but the right truck. U.S. forces needed the one with a dent on the rear panel, a cracked headlight or another small detail buried somewhere in tens of thousands of hours of Predator and Reaper footage. Unique spectral signatures across tens of thousands of vehicles served as additional discriminators. The military mastered collection, but processing at scale was dramatically more complex. As new sensors, unmanned systems and space assets expanded the data flow, much of that data went unreviewed. Regardless of how much data flowed into servers and storage, most of it went unanalyzed. Often, data was collected but took days or even weeks to be analyzed at the forward operating base or in garrison in the United States. Now, the use of vision-based artificial intelligence at the most disadvantaged edge will become a tactical discriminator and a force multiplier. Compute power has evolved to the point where handheld devices can capture, consume and analyze data at the most disadvantaged edge.
