Live facial recognition technology to be used by WA Police in Australian first By Keane Bourke, ABC Western Australia will become the first place in the country where police will trial real-time facial recognition cameras, scanning crowds for people wanted by police, registered child sex offenders and missing persons. The cameras, which will be deployed in a marked police van outside major events or in crowded areas, will scan faces to be cross referenced with a database of targets. Police Commissioner Col Blanch said that database will contain about 4,000 people with outstanding arrest warrants and thousands of registered child sex offenders, as well as people reported missing. The commissioner said signs alerting the public to the cameras would be clearly visible. "This is not about mass surveillance," he said. "This is about specifying those in our community who are wanted by police." If the technology detects a match, the image will be retained and an alert sent to nearby officers to confirm the person's identity. 'Increased freedoms and privacy' Commissioner Blanch said while his force had used facial recognition technology on already obtained footage for more than a decade, it was the first time in Australia police had used live feeds for almost-instant facial detection. He sought to quell concerns about potential breaches of privacy. "CCTV cameras are everywhere. They are owned by private businesses, local councils, they are around the world ... and who are they owned by, no-one would know," he said. ICE plans to give local police facial recognition app for immigration enforcement An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) privacy document publicly accessible on the agency’s website says a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) mobile facial recognition app will allow ICE-deputized state and local law enforcement officers to photograph people in the field, run their faces against federal identity records, and help determine whether they are removable from the U.S. The 10-page developerPrivacyPolicy (PTA), labeled ICE Task Force Module (TFM), Version ICE Privacy 09-2025, lists the app’s launch date as September 24, 2025, and says the project was in development when the document was approved by the ICE Privacy Office the next day. The document describes the TFM as a mobile application that was developed by CBP and made available to authorized “ICE non-federal law enforcement officers” operating in the field to verify a person’s identity and immigration status through facial recognition. Privacy rights advocates push back against data collection devices in Castro bars

Following a June 10 Gazetteer SF story about the presence of high-security data collection devices from a Calgary-based company called Patronscan in a number of Castro gay bars, digital rights group Fight for the Future is calling on Mix, Badlands, and Toad Hall to remove the technology from their businesses. “We demand you immediately remove facial recognition systems like Patronscan, cancel your contracts with biometric surveillance suppliers, and commit to never again using biometric identification systems on patrons,” the petition reads. “We demand the immediate and complete deletion of identity databases in a method verifiable by outside investigators.” Gazetteer previously reported that those three bars on 18th Street all use a Patronscan product called Guard+ to screen customers as they come through the door at peak hours. That product includes a forensic ID scanner, a camera, and a monitor. It allows bouncers to verify identities; track customer behaviors; and collect, store, and, in some cases, share bar-goers’ photos and personal data, including name, age, zip code, and gender. One of the main selling points of Patronscan is access to local “flag networks,” or shared private databases of blacklisted customers that can be accessed by other businesses that use the Patronscan system. A tribunal upheld the validity of four patents covering facial recognition authentication systems that a suite of Jumio Corp. products are accused of infringing. Jumio failed to demonstrate FaceTec Inc.'s US Patent Nos. 10,776,471; 11,157,606; 11,693,938; and 11,874,910 are obvious in light of previous patent applications and one issued patent, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board said in decisions unsealed Wednesday. Russian Propagandists Call for Arrests Over Moscow Drone Videos

Russian propagandists have called for criminal prosecutions, arrests, and interrogations of Moscow residents who filmed and shared videos of a recent Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian capital. According to The Moscow Times on Thursday, the demands came after what Russian officials described as the largest Ukrainian drone raid on Moscow since the start of the full-scale war. Armen Gasparyan, a host on the state-affiliated Solovyov Live channel, urged Russian security services to open treason cases against Moscow residents who recorded footage of the attack. A MARTÍNEZ, HOST: Federal immigration officers often use facial recognition in the field to identify undocumented immigrants. Now, a newly revealed document from the Department of Homeland Security outlines plans to give local police the same technology. NPR's Meg Anderson is here to explain this. So, Meg, tell us more about the DHS document and the tech it describes. MEG ANDERSON, BYLINE: Yeah. So the existence of this particular document was first reported by the news site 404 Media. And it describes a mobile app designed for local police who are deputized by ICE to enforce immigration law. Police use the app to scan the faces of people they stop. The app then runs those faces against more than 250 million government records. We're talking State Department visa records, the database TSA uses at airports. Once someone's face is scanned, the app tells police whether or not that person can be detained for an immigration violation. MARTÍNEZ: All right. So what do we know about how police will actually use this technology? ANDERSON: Not a lot, but we do know the app launched last September. That suggests that police have already been using it. A recent story in WIRED confirmed that a phone app for Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses included an unreleased feature called NameTag that could biometrically identify anyone in view of the glasses without their consent. Tech expert Omar Gallaga says Meta has removed the software, which also sparked concern over a connection to a defense contractor. News — Met releases 14 images as 16 May protest investigations continue Detectives investigating alleged offences during protests in central London on Saturday, 16 May have released images of 14 people they want to identify. There were 43 arrests on the day, which saw protests organised by the Palestine Coalition and other groups to mark the anniversary of the Nakba and a protest organised in the name of Stephen Yaxley-Lennon under the ‘Unite the Kingdom’ banner. Five people have been charged so far (details below) and detectives are continuing to investigate a number of further offences including 20 alleged hate crimes. Some of those – for example incidents of chanting – may involve multiple suspects. Officers have already sent a number of files to the Crown Prosecution Service for early investigative advice and they expect to submit further files for consideration in the near future. "The idea is to document as many species as you can," DiCesare said. "Anything you find within that time period will go toward our database." Participants can submit photographs through iNaturalist, an online platform used by amateur naturalists, researchers and conservation organizations around the world. The app uses image recognition technology to suggest species identifications, while a community of users helps verify observations. The information collected during the BioBlitz will contribute to a broader understanding of what species live in Milton and could help inform future conservation efforts. "You have to know something's rare to protect it," DiCesare said.
