In Memphis, for example, thousands of federal, state, and local law enforcement agents have invaded the city’s streets this year at the invitation of Tennessee’s Trump-supporting governor. Working as part of a 31-agency task force, they have carried out aggressive patrols, mass traffic stops, and large-scale immigration arrests, terrorizing local communities. Agents have engaged in such behaviors as tackling and arresting people for exercising their constitutional right to film the police, swerving at observers with their vehicles, following and photographing them, and otherwise intimidating them (All this is detailed in a lawsuit filed by my ACLU colleagues and in dismaying first-hand accounts of this behavior by victims.) This is a model that the Trump Administration would apparently like to spread to other cities, especially communities of color: flooding neighborhoods with aggressive, repressive, and frequently lawless agents and officers, blanketing communities with surveillance, and generally seeking to turn state and local police agencies into instruments of Trump’s federal government — its ideological obsessions, racism, and approach of loyalty over law. Abstract Nighttime urban waterlogging detection remains challenging because weak illumination, glare, and water-surface reflections often obscure the boundaries and features of waterlogged road regions. In addition, the limited availability of annotated nighttime samples restricts the generalization ability of data-driven models. To address these issues, this study develops a vision-based edge intelligence framework for nighttime urban waterlogging detection and segmentation. A diffusion-based augmentation strategy is first used to expand nighttime urban waterlogging samples. Then, a lightweight instance segmentation model, named Nocturnal-YOLOv11, is constructed by embedding an adaptive low-light enhancement module into the YOLOv11 framework. The model is further converted, quantized, and deployed on the RDK X3 edge computing platform using an INT8 inference scheme. Experiments on an independent real nighttime test set demonstrate that the proposed method improves low-light visual perception of waterlogged areas under weak illumination and reflective conditions while maintaining real-time edge inference capability. These results indicate its potential for practical nighttime waterlogging perception, urban water management, and emergency response applications. Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta has entered an agreement with Rank One Computing, a firm whose facial recognition software is used by the U.S. Marshals Service and other government agencies and police departments, Wired reports. Wired's report finds Meta has a software license to test Rank One's face recognition and "liveness" detection, which verifies if a camera is viewing a mask or photo instead of a real face. Dormant remnants of Rank One's software were in a version of Meta's AI app, that recently shipped to customers, according to Wired. The app is the companion software to Meta's smart glasses. According to public filings, Rank One's client list also includes the U.S. Department of War — the Trump administration's preferred name for the Department of Defense, which is still pending Congressional approval — and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Rank One did not reply to a request for comment Monday. In response to an email request for comment, Meta spokesperson Dina El-Kassaby Luce sent an identical statement to one a different Meta spokesperson emailed last week when Yahoo Tech inquired about a previous Wired story. That story looked at whether Meta was testing a facial recognition program called NameTag, which Wired found had been added to its Meta AI mobile app, but was not enabled. (WGGB/WSHM) - An Agawam City Council meeting drew strong opinions Monday night as neighbors and councilors pressed police about license plate recognition cameras. Residents showed up to voice privacy concerns while others spoke in support of the Flock cameras as a tool for police. Police also used the meeting as a chance to answer questions about what the camera do and don’t do. “What I really hope is that residents and our councilors have an open mind, listen to the questions and the answers and decide what’s best for Agawam,” said Agawam City Council President Anthony Russo. In the city, questions have been growing for weeks: Who’s being recorded? Who can search the data? What rules are in place when it comes to license plate recognition cameras? Monday, Agawam police faced city councilors and residents looking for answers. “Flock doesn’t video record people driving in their vehicles, it doesn’t record people on their bicycles,” said Police Chief Eric Gillis. “It takes still images of vehicles that are passing by and a image of the plate, that’s it. It’s not audio recording everybody, it’s not tracking everybody, we’re not tracking everybody.” Here’s how it works: The camera take still photos of passing vehicles, capture the license plate and use software to read it along with details like the car’s color, make and model. Those reads are stored in a searchable database so police can look up a specific plate or vehicle description and see when and where it was seen. Meta has once again denied that it has concrete plans about adding facial recognition elements into its AI glasses, as another report suggested that the company has been working with facial ID providers on a possible new feature to assist in user connection through the device. According to a new report from Wired, Meta has been in talks with facial recognition software developer Rank One regarding a possible face ID element within Meta AI glasses. Wired reported that Rank One’s board includes both a former CIA deputy director and a former FBI science chief. Through this connection the company could theoretically gain access to a whole new facial recognition network powered by Meta’s AI glasses and unleashed on an unwitting public. Meta criticized Wired’s reporting, with Meta’s spokesperson Andy Stone saying on X that Wired had neglected to include the company’s statement. As per Stone, that statement read: "What we've been saying for many months remains true and unchanged: we're exploring these types of features as people regularly express interest in seeing them. Nothing has shipped to consumers and no final decision has been made on what to do here, if anything. If we do decide to roll something out, we will take a thoughtful approach and do so with full transparency." So Meta isn’t denying the accuracy of the reporting. The company also didn’t deny another recent report about its potential facial recognition feature addition. A research team led by Professor Taesung Kim of the School of Mechanical Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU, President Ji-beom Yoo) developed an optoelectronic synaptic device that mimics the functions of human neurons and synapses at the device scale. The researchers designed a designable van der Waals (vdW) crystal through a single-step sulfurization process using mixed plasma. The developed device operates under optical stimuli, offering a structural solution to configure semiconductor materials for brain-inspired computing. Rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and hyper-connectivity require neuromorphic vision systems capable of sensing and processing vast amounts of visual data in real time. Optoelectronic synapses, which exhibit conductance variations in response to light signals, serve as core components of these systems. Layered vdW materials attracted significant attention as promising candidates due to their excellent optical properties and atomic-scale thickness. However, conventional vdW materials faced technical challenges, including the difficulty of precisely controlling grain boundaries and intercalation, polymer residue accumulation, mechanical warpage at interfaces, and poor large-area crystalline uniformity. To overcome these limitations, the research team focused on the structural similarity between light-sensitive ion channels in biological membranes and layered vdW lattices. The researchers applied an argon and hydrogen sulfide (Ar + H₂S) plasma sulfurization process to bulk van der Waals rhenium selenide (ReSe₂). This single-step process transformed the upper portion of the material into a nano-crystalline ReSe₂ layer composed of nano-sized grains, while preserving the underlying bulk single-crystalline ReSe₂ layer without damaging the interlayer interfaces. These two integrated layers structurally correspond to the light-sensitive ion channels of a neuronal cell membrane and the intracellular environment, respectively, and were fabricated without additional deposition or patterning steps. It follows a government consultation, in which 89% of 9,499 parents and carers said they strongly supported a legal minimum age for social media access, 88% of which strongly agreed that age should be under-16s. Apps such as Snapchat, TikTok, Youtube, Instagram, Facebook and X will be included in the ban, the government says, but it will not include messaging services WhatsApp and Signal. A lot of the detail about this ban "isn't particularly clear", BBC technology correspondent Chris Vallance says, with no definitive list of what's banned, and what's not. Aliyyah, a 14-year-old from Barnsley, calls the ban "a waste of time" and says "sometimes apps are safe spaces for people". While Sean, a 13-year-old from Wythenshawe, says "it's time they did something about" social media use, calling it a "bad place". Technology minister Liz Kendall described the ban as a "defining moment for our children", and said more details will be set out in the regulations. Ministers have embarked on a concerted lobbying operation to prevent a backlash from the Trump administration to the under-16s social media ban announced by Keir Starmer. Johannes Pinl, CEO of global defense and security company MARSS, said that the most recent drone that flew in the Iran conflict a few days ago was shot down by an almost fully autonomous defense system, and that’s the fundamental shift that needs to occur in air defense. “In the Middle East .... we have now such a mass of incoming targets,” he said during a roundtable at the Eurosatory defense exhibition June 15. “What we had to do was automate the kill chain, from detection, classification and countering, automate that as much as possible, so we can actually deal not with one, two, 10, 50, but hundreds of threats simultaneously.” Drones are becoming more autonomous and more embedded with artificial intelligence, and the key to defending against that threat is a multi-layered, fully autonomous approach, he said. “The only way to defend against that is actually being autonomous yourself, otherwise you're too late.” Layered air defense means possessing and executing multiple kinds of capabilities and effectors depending on the threat such as laser weapons that can eliminate high numbers of threats quickly and cheaply, interceptor drones that can be launched to defend against a drone swarm and more traditional defense systems that are cannon, missile or rocket based, but are more expensive, he said. “All that needs to be orchestrated by a very intelligent command and control system,” Andreas Schwer, CEO of EOS Defence Systems, said at the roundtable. “So, matching defense versus attackers is another

HKUST Develops World's First AI Slide-Free Pathology Imaging System Generates Histological Images in Just Three Minutes to Support Rapid Intraoperative Diagnosis A research team from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), together with an HKUST-incubated medtech startup, PhoMedics Limited, has developed Glanzir®, the world's first artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled, slide-free pathology imaging system. The system enables direct imaging of fresh tissue without the need for conventional procedures such as freezing, sectioning, and staining, producing histological images in approximately three minutes in an operating room setting for intraoperative assessment. Compared with using formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue, which is widely regarded as the gold standard in pathology, Glanzir® has demonstrated approximately 85% or higher diagnostic concordance. Upon completion of large-scale clinical trials, the team expects this concordance to improve further to around 95%. The technology has the potential to shorten intraoperative diagnostic time while preserving intact tissue for downstream analyses. The team plans to collaborate with public and private hospitals to advance clinical adoption, with the goal of improving overall diagnostic workflow efficiency. With an aging population and rising cancer rates, demand for pathology services continues to grow. Histopathology remains fundamental to cancer diagnosis. In current clinical practice, two primary techniques are used for tissue assessment: FFPE and frozen section analysis. While FFPE is considered the gold standard due to its high accuracy, it typically requires several days to a week to complete. Frozen section analysis, by contrast, can provide preliminary results within 30 to 45 minutes during surgery, but its diagnostic accuracy is suboptimal compared to FFPE, occasionally necessitating repeat surgery for patients. You or a neighbor likely uses a Ring doorbell or has some variety of home security system. Traffic cameras catching erratic and speeding drivers is far from a new phenomenon. And with AI becoming ever more integrated into all aspects of life, surveillance technology certainly isn't being left behind. But how do Americans feel about it? A report released last week by Utah-based software company LiveView Technologies, based on a Harris Poll survey of 2,089 U.S. adults, aimed to answer that question by painting a picture of how people actually feel about emerging technologies like AI-powered security cameras, license plate readers, and facial recognition in public spaces. Perhaps surprisingly, the main takeaway wasn't that Americans distrust surveillance or oppose AI integration into surveillance but oppose "unchecked, indiscriminate surveillance," said the report. "The public draws a precise line: They endorse targeted technology that monitors behavior, detects active criminal actions, and identifies known violent offenders, while explicitly rejecting systems designed to track ordinary citizens going about their daily routines," the report continued. A tech firm in Cornwall is making waves on the world stage with its facial recognition technology. Penryn-based Salto VisionWorks, headquartered at Tremough Innovation Centre, has launched its frictionless access solutions in the USA and is planning further global expansion. The business began more than a decade ago under the name TouchByte and was acquired by global door access company Salto in 2023. Jeremy Sneller, managing director at Salto VisionWorks, said: "We started in Cornwall 11 years ago with a small team and a big idea – to use face recognition to make everyday access simpler and more secure. "Launching in the US with a huge stand in Las Vegas is a milestone for us, and it's one we're proud to reach while still based here at Tremough Innovation Centre." Salto VisionWorks’ technology delivers secure, seamless access to offices, gyms, and facilities across higher education, health and care, residential, and critical industries. To date, it has processed access for approximately 750,000 people. The company emphasises privacy and security in its approach to facial recognition. Mr Sneller said: "The technology itself is focused on convenience, not surveillance. "Our system doesn’t store faces; it stores an algorithm, so people can enjoy the benefits of frictionless access without feeling like they're being watched." Salto VisionWorks recently showcased its technology in Germany and has further plans to expand into Norway and the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore.
