UK selects Cognitec for facial age estimation in asylum assessments The UK government has selected a vendor for facial age estimation. The £322,000 ($433,745) contract begins on June 1, 2026 and runs for three years. The contract award notice lists established British IT provider Akhter Computers Limited as the main contractor, with biometrics services subcontracted to German facial recognition specialist Cognitec. The award moves facial age estimation from pilot and policy discussions into operational use within the UK’s asylum system. It also places the technology at the center of a contentious debate over migration, children’s rights and the role of AI in government decision-making. The contract comes as the Home Office formally incorporates facial age estimation into its asylum age-assessment framework. Newly published guidance explains how facial age estimation can be used to support immigration officers making initial decisions about whether undocumented arrivals should be treated as children or adults. The document outlines how facial age estimation can be used to classify asylum seekers. “Asylum seekers frequently arrive at the UK border with no official identity documents and so it can sometimes be difficult to know for sure which are children,” it says. “A child might look like an adult when they are not, and vice versa. Adult migrants sometimes claim to be children to prevent their removal and to take advantage of protections designed for minors. Sometimes children say they are adults to avoid being separated from friends. Suspect arrested for North Las Vegas murder after facial recognition match LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A suspect has been arrested in a North Las Vegas murder case after detectives got a facial recognition match, according to police and court records. Kenneth Rapier, 27, was booked into Clark County Detention Center on Wednesday, May 27, on suspicion of open murder, robbery and grand larceny of a motor vehicle. A North Las Vegas Police affidavit identifies Rapier as a suspect in the Feb. 1 shooting of Genaro Patterson Jr. near E. Centennial Parkway and 5th Street. The gunman then took a Chevrolet Corvette that had been rented and drove off. According to the affidavit, a witness to the shooting told officers that the victim was his cousin. When police asked him to identify the shooter, the witness only wrote down "Black male name 43." Detectives reviewed social media video and saw one video clip showing a man wearing a red hoodie looking at a Chevrolet Corvette. At the bottom of the clip was a tag that read "43" and "Kennape." Police took images from an Instagram account belonging to "Kennape" and ran it through a facial recognition program, which came back with a match to Rapier. Detectives compared the images and determined they were a match. Officers found the Corvette and obtained its GPS data. They tracked it to a steakhouse near the Las Vegas Strip hours before the shooting and reviewed its surveillance video. Police wrote that Rapier could be seen getting into the passenger seat of the car. Detectives then got a warrant for Rapier's cell phone data, which placed him at the steakhouse and the area of the shooting. Court records indicate Rapier is being held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 10.

The United States is reportedly bringing a powerful new weapon to the Iran war: large artificial intelligence (AI) models tasked with automating every stage of the targeting process, from satellite imagery analysis to final strike selection.

AI will be used to estimate age of asylum seekers from next year An Artificial Intelligence (AI) age estimation tool that aims to detect adult migrants posing as children will be deployed at the UK's borders next year. A software company has been awarded a contract to develop and test the technology, which will estimate a person's age by analysing photographs of them taken at the border. The Home Office says the technology will make it easier to identify adult migrants "attempting to game the system", after initial testing indicated "promising performance and accuracy". But Human Rights Watch urged the government to scrap the scheme, describing it as "unproven technology" that will undermine the protections vulnerable children are entitled to. Unaccompanied child migrants receive support from local councils and are housed in the care system rather than more traditional asylum accommodation such as hotels. They are entitled to legal protections which can simplify the asylum application system and make it easier to stay in the country for longer. The decision to use the software comes after years of heightened levels of people crossing the English Channel in small boats and claiming asylum at the border. A total of 111,084 people claimed asylum in the UK in the year ending June 2025, 14% more than in the previous year. In the year ending March 2026, more than 6,400 migrants claiming to be children were age assessed at the border, with 43% found to be adults, according to Home Office data. A report carried out by the UK government's independent immigration inspector last year found cases where adult migrants had been classified as children - and cases where child migrants had been wrongly classified as adults. Instagram post, facial recognition leads police to suspect in NLV slaying Authorities used social media and facial recognition technology to track down a suspect in the killing of a man in North Las Vegas, according to police and court records. Kenneth Lee Rapier, 27, is charged with murder, grand larceny of a motor vehicle and robbery with use of a deadly weapon in the Feb. 1 slaying of Genaro Patterson Jr., 36. Patterson suffered a gunshot wound to the chest in the 100 block of East Centennial Parkway, near Losee Road, at 3:06 a.m. Feb. 1, police said. A North Las Vegas police detective wrote in an affidavit that video surveillance from the area where the killing occurred showed a rented Corvette and the victim’s vehicle at the crime scene prior to the killing. One witness told police she heard people arguing prior to the shooting, and another witness told police that the gunman was known as “43,” police said. Police later located Instagram videos posted the day prior that police said depicted the same Corvette. At the bottom of the clip was the tag “43,” police said. A profile photograph from the Instagram account was put into facial recognition software, which returned a match for Rapier, police said. Police then located more surveillance video from a Las Vegas business that depicted Rapier as a passenger in the Corvette. Police said a warrant for Rapier’s cell phone produced data placing him in the area of the killing at the time it unfolded. Court records show an arrest warrant was issued for Rapier on Feb. 9 and he was arrested on May 11. His next court appearance in North Las Vegas Justice Court is scheduled for June 10. London police transparency push raises more facial recognition concerns London’s Metropolitan Police will begin releasing more body-worn camera footage as part of a transparency initiative aimed at providing greater context around police incidents. The move, however, has renewed scrutiny of how bodycam footage is used within the UK’s growing facial recognition ecosystem. The Metropolitan Police is revising the policy so that the public can see a full picture of incidents, it said on Monday. Videos from bodycams were previously only published after criminal proceedings, which sometimes take years to complete. The delay left the public relying on footage shared online by others, which sometimes only showed a partial picture. “We are increasingly seeing videos posted online, which are selectively edited or show a short snippet of a longer interaction,” says Met Police Commander Neerav Patel. “Without the full picture, this undermines the work of our officers.” The Met Police first tested body-worn cameras with a 500-officer pilot in May 2014, then deployed them force-wide to thousands of officers in October 2016. The recent decision comes after officers faced criticism over their use of force in viral videos filmed by bystanders. The latest case involved last month’s Golders Green knife attack in London, in which a man stabbed two Jewish men. Apprehending officers faced criticism online, prompting the police to release the body-worn footage filmed by Axon Body cameras. A similar move was made after the far-right “Unite the Kingdom” protest earlier this month, which also featured live facial recognition surveillance. “The public only sees a fraction of the incredible work that officers do each day, this new change in policy will allow them to see what we’re doing to keep them safe,” says Patel. FBI adds iris scanning to identification tools BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) - The FBI has added iris scanning as a new identification biometric, joining fingerprints and DNA in the agency’s identification tools. The FBI holds over 161 million sets of fingerprints in its Next Generation Identification database. The agency is now building a new database for iris identification. The iris scanning process uses a pair of goggles equipped with infrared light technology to capture a high-quality image. The detailed image of an iris is then uploaded into the database. Officials say iris identification is as reliable as a fingerprint. Each iris is unique and structurally distinct, making it suitable for recognition purposes. Approximately 2,500 agencies across the United States are using the iris technology. EU research projects target face morph attacks threatening border, identity systems The European Biometrics Association (EAB)’s recent morphing workshop highlighted two Horizon Europe research projects developing new defenses against face morph attacks targeting identity systems and border controls. Project EINSTEIN and the SafeTravellers project are working to improve morph attack detection (MAD) as generative AI makes facial image manipulation increasingly accessible. Morph attacks, which blend multiple faces into a single image, can be used to obtain identity documents that may later authenticate more than one person. The threat is particularly relevant for passports, visas and digital identity systems that rely on facial biometrics as a primary trust anchor. As AI tools make creating realistic morphs easier, cheaper and more convincing, detecting manipulated facial images is becoming a critical component of border security, credential issuance and digital identity assurance. The toolkit for creating face morph attacks has evolved rapidly, from traditional landmark-warping techniques to diffusion-based image generation. Advanced morph attack detection systems must therefore identify manipulated images produced by a wide range of methods while accounting for variations in image quality, capture environments and database diversity. Daniela Klette, 67, was captured in 2024 after a 30-year manhunt, thanks to AI facial recognition software used by an investigative journalist who matched an old wanted poster image with recent online photos. She was not tried for the Red Army Faction's (RAF) terror attacks, but for a series of robberies carried out between 1999 and 2016. Prosecutors are still considering whether to file charges over earlier crimes. The RAF, also known as the Baader-Meinhof Group, emerged from radical left-wing movements in the 1960s and targeted government officials and business leaders in Germany. Klette is suspected of belonging to the group’s so-called “third generation,” which sought to overthrow what it viewed as a fascist capitalist system. The organization was linked to the deaths of 34 people between 1970 and 1991 before formally disbanding in the late 1990s. Klette was convicted over robberies committed across 17 years. The first took place in Duisburg in July 1999, when masked gunmen armed with rifles and an RPG robbed an armored cash vehicle. The last robbery, in Braunschweig in June 2016, netted 1.4 million euros (about 1,6 million dollars) from another armored vehicle. Matthew Perry‘s personal assistant who injected the actor with the ketamine that led to his fatal overdose was sentenced Wednesday to 41 months in prison. The assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, pleaded guilty in 2024 to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine causing death. He repeatedly gave Perry the drug despite several warning signs of danger, administering the dose that killed him on Oct. 28, 2023. The sentence puts an end to a yearslong legal saga after Perry was discovered unresponsive and floating face down in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home after becoming increasingly reliant on the drug. Four others have been charged and sentenced in connection to the death. Related Stories Iwamasa, who was paid $150,000 per year, had known Perry since 1992 and became his live-in assistant in 2022. Prosecutors said he was aware of the actor’s struggle with addiction and was warned by doctors that ketamine shouldn’t be self-administered. Starting in 2023, Perry directed Iwamasa to procure him ketamine, according to a sentencing memo. He was introduced to Salvador Plasencia, who was sentenced to 30 months last year for supplying the actor with 20 vials of ketamine over two weeks in the period leading up to the overdose, as a source. Iwamasa bought dozens of vials of the drug across several purchases, injecting Perry as the actor’s addiction worsened. “Found the sweet spot but trying different places led to running out of ketamine,” he told Plasencia. Prosecutors said Iwamasa found Perry unconscious on at least two occasions due to adverse reactions to ketamine.
