A similar dynamic is playing out in hospitals, schools and town halls, but right now police chiefs are turning to AI to escape a fiscal bind. The UK’s largest police force is shrinking; a £125m funding shortfall means it faces cutting 1,150 posts. Scotland Yard wants to use AI to deploy Palantir’s systems to comb through human intelligence reports, email caches, phone records and the rest of the torrent of digital evidence trail left by 21st century crime. The implication is clear – AI is now seen as a plausible alternative for at least some human labour in policing and is on its way to becoming a mainstay of the national security apparatus. Human police officers deal with some of society’s most vulnerable people, and also some of the most confidential data and sources. The police want AI to do it too. Scotland Yard is not an outlier in looking at AI. Forces such as Bedfordshire and Leicestershire have used Palantir tech. $5M lawsuit claims Disney's California theme parks illegally collect facial recognition data
ANAHEIM — A $5 million class action lawsuit has been filed against Disney over claims its California theme parks collect facial-recognition data from visitors without clear disclosure or consent.
The lawsuit says Disney started using the technology at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park in April to verify tickets. It works by comparing photos with images taken when people first used their tickets or annual pass.
According to the lawsuit, separate entrances exist for visitors who don't want to take part in the biometric scanning. But the lawsuit claims that does not amount to meaningful notice.

“I got an email saying that the office of Congresswoman Cindy Hyde-Smith had asked about several intellectual properties that came out of the state, and they had chosen my intellectual property work,” said Scott, an MSU associate professor of chemistry. While Scott said her work is still in development, she is being recognized for her team’s discovery of a new class of shortwave infrared (SWIR) imaging dyes. “We have some data, but we're still working on some more data. And it involves us trying to detect cancer cells selectively,” she said. “The reason is that we want to be able to differentiate normal cells from cancer cells. Scott’s technology aims to accurately determine the boundaries of cancerous tumors in deep tissue, something she believes surgeons have long struggled with. “It's like a mountain, right? So when you get to the bottom, how do you know where it actually stops because it blends right into the valley,” she said. Surgeons will often cut into extra tissue around tumors, trying to extract dangerous residual cells, following these interventions with chemotherapy or radiation therapy. It’s not a failproof system. “If they miss cells, those cells can regrow and they tend to be more aggressive when they come back,” said Scott. Her technology uses special dyes injected into deep tissue and low infrared rays to specifically detect cancer cells without surgically cutting into patients. Currently, CT scans and PET scans can look for tumors, but may not be able to accurately analyze the full boundary of a tumor. Currently, surgeons have been applying stains directly to tissue, but remaining cancer cells may still be hard to detect after intervention efforts and treatment. “Either they missed it in the original treatment or it had already metastasized and spread. Figures Abstract Background The early detection of cognitive impairments, such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), is essential for timely intervention and management. This study evaluates the performance of various deep-learning models in classifying speech recordings from individuals with normal cognition (NC), MCI, and AD, to identify the most effective approach for audio-based cognitive impairment diagnosis. Methods Speech data were obtained from the AI Hub “Cognitive Impairment Diagnosis Voice/Conversation” dataset. The study analyzed voice recordings from 320 female participants (105 with Alzheimer’s disease, 92 with mild cognitive impairment, and 123 cognitively normal controls). Three deep-learning architectures were compared: a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN), an audio spectrogram transformer (AST), and a speech recognition model (Wav2Vec 2.0). The models were trained using features such as spectrograms, mel-spectrograms, and mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs). Model performance was assessed using accuracy, recall, precision, and F1-score, with a five-fold cross-validation strategy to ensure robust and unbiased evaluation. Statistical significance was assessed using pairwise proportion z-tests with Holm-Bonferroni correction, and Wilson score 95% confidence intervals were computed for each model’s accuracy. Results Wav2Vec 2.0 outperformed the other models, achieving the highest accuracy and F1-scores for NC vs. MCI (accuracy: 0.74, F1: 0.72) and NC vs. AD (accuracy: 0.83, F1: 0.83). Pairwise proportion z-tests with Holm-Bonferroni correction confirmed that Wav2Vec 2.0 significantly outperformed 7 of 10 competing models (corrected p < 0.05) in both classification tasks. A day at Tommy Robinsonâs rally: QR codes, crypto and an AI rapper Unite the Kingdom was billed as a peopleâs protest. On the ground, it looked like an operation built to turn grievance into clips, donations and sales I had been on Tommy Robinsonâs mailing list for a week before I made it to the Unite the Kingdom rally on Saturday. By then, he had asked me for money seven times. The emails were urgent and scrappy. âCould YOU be the patriot that puts us over the finishing line?â one email asked. Confusingly, the stated funding target changed from day to day. It all implied a small, grassroots operation, running on the donations of loyal followers. In the same week, the rally was being described very differently elsewhere. Keir Starmer had warned of âfar-right agitatorsâ descending on London. The Met had promised a âzero-tolerance approachâ and said it would deploy thousands of officers alongside helicopters, armoured vehicles and facial recognition tech. None of this build-up matched what I found in Parliament Square. The day was calmer and more subdued than expected â and a lot more slick and corporate. The crowd, who were a mixed bunch, expressed discernible anger, much of it rooted in real and recognisable grievances. But around them sat a much bigger operation: donors, sponsors, QR codes, merch stands, crypto promotions, an AI rapper and a media setup built to turn the rally into a lucrative viral spectacle. The event felt at once like a political rally, a Christian gathering and a media production. The people I spoke to voiced familiar frustrations: immigration, housing, crime, money, family, faith and the feeling that life was becoming harder. Others seemed shaped by a darker information diet. A visitor has filed a $5 million lawsuit against Disneyland for allegedly failing to properly disclose the use of facial-recognition technology at park and collecting sensitive data on guests. Summer Christine Duffield of Riverside County, California, filed the lawsuit after a May 10 visit to Disneyland and sister park California Adventure, alleging that the resort violates privacy and consumer protection laws collecting biometric data of visitors, without adequate consent. "Disney does not adequately disclose the use of their biometric collection, so consumers — which almost always include children — have no idea that Disney is collecting this highly sensitive data," the plaintiff noted in the lawsuit. "Guests should be able to expressly opt in to this type of sensitive facial recognition technology with written consent — the onus of privacy rights should not be on the victim." The suit was filed on May 15 in U.S. District Court in New York. The lawsuit cites an article from The Times on consumer reaction to Disney's use of facial recognition. The Walt Disney Company didn't respond to a request for comment. "People are getting fed up with being force-fed new tech, new AI, new tracking tools," said Ari Waldman, a professor at UC Irvine School of Law. Walt Disney Co. rolled out its facial recognition technology in late April across Disneyland Resort to verify tickets. The way it works is guests' faces are scanned, converted into a numerical identifier and matched with ticket data. Disney's privacy policy notes that the identifiers created for identification are deleted within 30 days unless they need to be kept for legal or fraud prevention purposes.
