An International Conclave has begun for this purpose. The conclave is discussing the needs, action plans, precautions and possibilities related to smart cities. An international conference on the development of future cities was inaugurated today at Graphic Era Deemed University. Addressing the session, Chief Guest and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Ecuador in India, Henry Larea, said that it is important to learn from the experiences of different countries for the development of smart cities, but every city must develop solutions according to its own needs. He mentioned the metro and integrated public transport system in Quito, urban development and digital transformation in Guayaquil, and initiatives for cycling and electric transport in Cuenca. He said that successful experiments can be adapted to local needs through international cooperation between cities. Vice Chancellor Dr Narpinder Singh said that future cities will become smart not merely through technology, but through safe, clean, sustainable and inclusive development. AI and digital technology can improve traffic management, water management, disaster management and citizen services. Environment-friendly smart city models are essential for Uttarakhand. Malaysia’s representative, Thava Kumar, said that a smart city is not created merely through technology and infrastructure, but develops through people’s thinking, participation and the use of appropriate technology. Sharing Malaysia’s experiences, he highlighted the importance of recycling and environmental conservation. The two-day international conference will discuss topics including smart city development, artificial intelligence, cyber security, digital services, smart transportation, healthcare, environmental conservation and sustainable urban development. KUCHING: Malaysia needs to shift from being merely a production base to becoming a country that creates and owns content and intellectual property (IP) to ensure its digital creative industry remains competitive regionally and globally. Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) chief executive officer Anuar Fariz Fadzil said Malaysia could no longer rely on competitive costs as its main strategy to attract and retain the digital content industry. Instead, the country must focus on excellence, quality, innovation, talent and developing local IP with commercial value in international markets. AI Benefits Concentrated Among Wealthy Americans and Major Cities, Widening Income and Regional Gaps Warnings are mounting that the economic benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption are concentrating among wealthy Americans and major metropolitan areas, potentially widening regional, asset, and income disparities. According to separate reports released by Anthropic, the Brookings Institution, and Oxford Economics, workers and businesses in economically advantaged regions of the United States are the most active users of AI. AI adoption is concentrated around the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Washington, and Seattle, while per-capita AI usage was lowest in Mississippi, West Virginia, and North Dakota. Mark Muro, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, noted that "superstar cities" that led in the digital economy are also gaining an edge in AI adoption, which could entrench regional disparities. He warned that companies and regions with higher AI adoption rates could also experience faster job losses if workers are replaced by AI. The Stock Market Shows Wealth Concentration The wealth created by the AI boom in the stock market has flowed to high-income American households. According to Goldman Sachs, gains in AI-related stocks accounted for the overwhelming majority of the S&P 500's rise this year. The question is who owns those shares. The top 20% of U.S. households by income hold approximately 90% of total stock market assets, meaning the benefits of rising stock prices have been concentrated among them. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, described this phenomenon as the "wealth effect" — the psychological confidence that comes from growing investment assets translates into consumption. Intel said on Aug. 20 that demand for robotics has surpassed 50%, while readiness remains far behind. Intel commissioned Man Bites Dog and Coleman Parkes Research to survey more than 800 corporate executives, robotics experts and government officials. The survey found that 60% of companies and institutions plan to deploy robots within their organizations over the next five years. The organizations surveyed have annual revenue of $500 million. Robots currently replace 12% of the workforce, with the figure expected to rise to 22% by 2030. Intel said robotics is moving beyond the experimental stage and entering commercialization. Among respondents, 42% said budgets had been secured, while 39% said they were actively developing related strategies. By contrast, only 40% had established a clear robotics strategy. The defense sector had the highest proportion at 48%, followed by smart cities, manufacturing, retail and healthcare. Forty percent of respondents cited shortages of technology and talent as bottlenecks to robot adoption. Fifty-five percent said safety concerns were delaying adoption, while 68% said clear global standards would accelerate deployment. Performance was more important than appearance for 77% of respondents. More than three-quarters said robots need to make decisions within 100 milliseconds, while about 25% said response times of less than 10 milliseconds are required. “The gap is growing between organizations that aim to deploy robots and those that are ready to do so,” said John Healy, Intel vice president and general manager of Industrial and Robotics. “Organizations that build robotics by bringing together strategy, workforce, development, safety and infrastructure will be better positioned to realize physical artificial intelligence (AI).” Intel is providing the foundation for companies to deploy robots, including edge AI semiconductors, the Robotics AI Suite and OpenVINO Physical AI tools.

For decades, Mumbai has been known as the city that never sleeps. Increasingly, however, it is also becoming a city that never cools down. A new study published in the Journal of Urban Management by Harekrishna Manna et al. has found that nighttime temperatures across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have risen steadily over the past 25 years, with some densely urbanised parts of the city experiencing temperatures more than 5°C higher than surrounding areas. The research warns that Mumbai’s heat challenge is no longer merely a daytime phenomenon. The city is now accumulating and retaining heat after sunset, creating what scientists call a nighttime Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect—a condition with profound implications for public health, energy consumption, urban planning and climate resilience. The study arrives at a critical moment. Indian cities are experiencing more frequent and intense heatwaves, while urban populations continue to expand rapidly. As climate change raises baseline temperatures, the combination of global warming and local urban heat is creating a dangerous double burden for millions of residents. The Mumbai findings offer not only a warning but also a roadmap for cities across India and the Global South. Heat is usually associated with the hottest part of the afternoon. But nighttime temperatures can be equally important because the body needs cooler conditions after daytime exposure to heat. When temperatures remain high after sunset, people have less opportunity to recover from heat stress. This can increase the risk of heat exhaustion, cardiovascular illness and sleep disruption, particularly among older people, children and those living in densely built and poorly ventilated neighbourhoods. The researchers analysed nighttime land surface temperatures across Mumbai from 2000 to 2025 using satellite observations and spatial modelling. BUCKEYE — West-MEC's water systems program has been around for three years, growing from 12 students to 50. It is the only high school course of its kind in the state.
West Valley cities like Surprise approached West-MEC to build a pipeline for future municipal water operators. And the jobs are there, according to Surprise's own water director.
"If you were to look at any utility across the Valley and maybe the southwest, for that matter, they're probably sitting at about a five to 10 percent vacancy rate right now, and I would venture to guess that, over the next five years, 15 to 20 percent of the workforce will be eligible for retirement," said Michael Boule, the water department director for Surprise.

Similarly, educational systems in developing cities reflect important disparities in both access and quality. AI-driven learning platforms will help tailor instruction and resource allocation more effectively, but must be designed to safeguard data security and fairness to avoid reinforcing social inequalities. Most water and electricity utilities in cities are under tremendous pressure due to consumption beyond sustainable levels and a generally aging infrastructure. Some cities, like Chennai, have suffered from serious water shortages, while others are regularly load-shedding during peak demand for electricity. AI will further enhance efficiency through smart grids, predictive maintenance, and water-usage forecasting that guarantee sustainability of urban operations. But ethical deployment shall demand transparency, equity in access, and accountability in decision-making. This chapter examines various challenges associated with smart city, opportunities for people staying in smart city compared to rural regions. The proposed chapter also focuses on arriving at feasible solutions for the challenges faced in the smart city involving the usage of responsible AI technology.
