You're in an AI tech startup, you can solve everything. You're in the government, you can do all the policy. I don't think so,” said UNDP’s Regional Digital and AI Expert, Juan Kanggrawan. Speaking to Civic Punks’ podcast host, Derek Alton, on the sidelines of GovInsider’s Festival of Innovation (FOI) in Singapore, in March this year, Kanggrawan shared what he learned from his time in government. “First is humility. Don't think you are the best. You know everything. Try to learn and work with people from multiple perspectives,” he said. The second is the ability to solve problems. Referencing former US President Barack Obama, Kanggrawan said the most valuable people in any organisation are those who can execute and deliver results. “I need people who can do, get the things done. Problem solver,” he said, adding that the principle applies to anyone working in a startup, government, university, or international organisation. Ekrem İmamoğlu has served as Mayor of Istanbul since 2019, building a model of inclusive, solidarity-based governance that has made him one of the most popular elected leaders in Turkey. Dive Brief: - The nation’s unhoused population was 745,652 on a single night in January 2025, a 3% decrease compared with the previous year, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s annual homelessness assessment report. - Twenty-two states and Washington, D.C., recorded decreases in homelessness compared with 2024, with New York and Illinois seeing the largest drops in 2025 after experiencing the highest increases in 2024. - The report said 16,931 fewer people — a 4% drop — sought emergency shelter in 2025, making it the largest contributor to the nation’s overall decline in homelessness. Dive Insight: The report comes as homeless advocates, who favor permanent housing programs, disagree with the Trump administration over how homelessness should be addressed. HUD framed the data as a reprimand of so-called “housing first” policies embraced by prior administrations. “The data is clear that the status quo of ‘housing first’ has failed to meaningfully reduce homelessness, resulting in crisis levels of people living on the streets," HUD Secretary Scott Turner said in a news release. "HUD is restoring its programs to advance recovery and self-sufficiency and to ensure that taxpayer-funded benefits serve American families.” Homelessness in the U.S. reached record highs in 2024. HUD published the 2025 homelessness assessment late Friday afternoon after delaying it since December. Turner blamed the holdup on the prolonged government shutdown last fall. Along with an overall reduction in homelessness, the latest point-in-time count showed a 3% reduction in unsheltered homelessness compared with 2024, or a reduction of nearly 8,000 unsheltered people. Facility and business leaders recognize that workplace space optimization has a significant impact on business performance, but most organizations are not investing in the technology that can unlock value from better space use, according to reports by facilities management firms JLL and ISS. “Most organizations are still not structured to capture the full value of the workplace, creating a significant opportunity for FM and CRE leaders to unlock additional value,” Steve Quick, CEO of Americas at ISS, said in announcing findings from a report his company released. Facility leaders call improving space data accuracy and reporting capabilities two of their top planning objectives, a JLL survey shows. That signals that organization leaders believe an effective real estate strategy begins with trustworthy data, the JLL report says. But cost constraints, and the need to support the addition of technology tools with hard data to prove their value, are holding them back from making the investments they need, according to ISS’s report. Only 20% of survey respondents prioritize those investments in their facilities management strategy due to a “proof gap” when it comes to gauging their effectiveness, ISS says in its report. At the same time, 83% of business leaders believe how the workplace is organized – space optimization – has a large impact on organizational performance, according to ISS. But, against that, 68% say economic factors weigh more heavily on their planning. The ISS survey responses are from nearly 3,000 business leaders in 28 countries. This means that the vision of centralised living is steadily taking shape, says the Mogale City Municipality. Strategically located around Leratong Hospital, in Kagiso, west of Johannesburg, the broader development is expected to deliver approximately 15 000 mixed-income housing units, supported by retail, transport, education, healthcare and government service facilities. Once complete, the integrated precinct will allow residents to live, work and access essential services within a single connected hub, significantly reducing travel times and improving quality of life, the municipality says. But beyond the infrastructure rising from the ground, the project is already creating meaningful economic opportunities for local communities. How local businesses build the vision Since its inception, the project is said to have prioritised local economic participation, labour utilisation and the empowerment of local SMMEs within Mogale City. With the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act supplemental five-year water infrastructure funding set to expire Sept. 30, local government and water stakeholders are urging federal lawmakers to reauthorize core water programs and fully fund water infrastructure programs in fiscal year 2027. The 2021 IIJA allocated $50 billion for water infrastructure over five years, divided across five pots under the Clean Water State Revolving Fund and the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund, with specific funding to replace lead pipes and address PFAS and other contaminants. The National League of Cities is asking Congress to maintain the IIJA’s authorization amount — $5.85 billion each to the Clean Water SRF and the Drinking Water SRF — and reauthorize grant and technical assistance programs to address PFAS, lead pipes and other water infrastructure projects in FY27. “Reauthorizing those programs is one of our top priorities,” Carolyn Berndt, legislative director, sustainability, told Smart Cities Dive. “It’s a critical time because we believe the committees are developing this legislation now.” While the House Appropriations Committee has begun advancing FY27 spending bills, including measures addressing transportation infrastructure funding that also expires Sept. 30, Congress has not yet introduced major legislation to reauthorize Environmental Protection Agency programs such as the Clean Water and Drinking Water SRFs, PFAS grant programs, lead service line replacement programs and other IIJA-funded water programs that expire Sept. 30, she said. Wastewater and stormwater systems will need $630 billion, and drinking water systems will need $625 billion over the next 20 years to keep up with infrastructure maintenance and comply with federal laws, according to Environmental Protection Agency reports from 2024 and 2023, respectively. Dive Brief: - Waymo will introduce its first purpose-built robotaxis in San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles in the coming weeks, the company said in a May 28 press release. - The vehicles feature wide, sliding doors; a low step-in height and flat floor; three rider-customizable LED screens and charging ports. - Rides will be free for select riders in those cities for a limited time, allowing Waymo to gather rider feedback, Waymo spokesperson Sandy Karp told Smart Cities Dive in an email. Dive Insight: A software system that performs better in snowier conditions is key to the new vehicle, called Ojai. “You’ll see the Ojai appearing in more cities soon, with a special focus on those that experience more extreme winter conditions,” Karp said. Waymo has tested in Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Denver and other northern cities in snowy conditions, primarily with its Jaguar I-PACE vehicles, which it builds in a Mesa, Arizona, factory in partnership with global automotive supplier Magna. The new vehicles will be built in China by Zeekr, with final assembly of autonomous systems taking place in the Mesa facility. The Ojai vehicle offers more accessible features than the Jaguars, including a flat floor, grab bars and Braille signage, according to Waymo. “The Ojai also features operational improvements, including easier-to-clean interiors, faster charging, increased battery capacity, and a more modular design for efficient maintenance and repairs,” Karp said. Amazon-owned Zoox already operates purpose-built vehicles in Las Vegas and San Francisco, with Miami and Austin, Texas, to be added soon. Naver is increasingly expanding beyond online services into the physical world, aggressively strengthening capabilities in defense, robotics and drones based on its large-scale proprietary data assets and AI technologies. On June 1, Naver announced an investment in drone specialist company Uvify. In an unusual move, the investment was made directly by Naver headquarters rather than through its startup investment arm D2SF. Rare Direct Investment in Autonomous Drone Company Uvify Uvify specializes in drone swarm flight technologies and autonomous flight platforms. Since its founding, the company has actively targeted overseas markets and became the first South Korean drone company to receive the "$10 Million Export Tower" award in December 2024. An executive from Uvify, Robert Cheek, also serves on the board of the Dronecode Foundation, a global organization supporting open-source drone flight control software including PX4. According to the foundation's board roster, the Uvify executive is currently the only representative from a Korean company. Uvify is known for large-scale nighttime drone performances including the Hangang Drone Light Show and the Gwangalli M Drone Light Show. The real world is always in motion. To operate autonomously, physical AI systems — including robots, autonomous vehicles (AVs) and smart spaces — need to understand not just what they see and what caused that to happen, but what’s likely to happen next. In a warehouse, a robot may encounter object configurations it’s never seen before. On the road, an AV may need to respond when a pedestrian steps out from between parked cars. And in a factory, a safety system must predict where a forklift is heading, not just detect that it’s there. Capturing and recreating those scenarios in the real world is slow, expensive and often impossible to repeat at scale. NVIDIA Cosmos 3 is built for that loop. The new world foundation model — announced today at NVIDIA GTC Taipei at COMPUTEX — combines vision reasoning and multimodal generation across text, video, images, ambient sound and action in a single model to help developers create world data with physical context. Cosmos 3 powers perception, prediction and action. Learn more about how Cosmos 3’s mixture-of-transformers architecture enables a reasoning block to first interpret what is happening in a scene, then harnesses a generation block to use that context to create physically grounded outputs, from synthetic video to robot-task data. Cosmos 3 is a generalist foundation model trained on diverse data that gives it a broad understanding of how scenes, motion and robotic actions relate. It’s an omnimodel with native action generation, meaning it can produce numerical action data, such as joint angles, gripper positions and trajectory points, that describe how a robot should move to complete a task. What if utility poles could be stronger, lighter, and virtually maintenance-free? In an exclusive interaction with EFY’s Nitisha Dubey, Rahul Bandaru from Helipole outlines how the company is redefining infrastructure using corrosion-resistant, durable composite poles for street lighting, telecom, and smart city applications. Q. What is Helipole, and what does your company do? A. Helipole is a brand developed by CNC Technics, a machine manufacturing company focused on advanced composites. The company was incorporated in 1986 and entered the composites space in 2000 with the development of India’s first CNC filament winding machine, inaugurated by A P J Abdul Kalam. Helipole, launched in 2018, applies aerospace-grade composite technology to infrastructure by manufacturing high-performance utility poles. Q. What exactly is your product, and what innovation does it bring? A. Helipole is a composite utility pole made from glass fibre and resin. It is designed to support applications such as street lighting, telecom towers, smart poles, and electrical distribution. The innovation lies in its lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and non-conductive properties, as well as the ability to customise material characteristics for specific use cases. Q. How would you explain Helipole in simple terms to a non-technical audience? A. It can be understood as wrapping strong threads around a pipe, where these threads are industrial glass fibres soaked in resin. They are wound at precise angles using machines to create a hollow pole that is extremely strong yet weighs only one-third as much as steel. Unlike traditional poles, it does not rust, crack, or require frequent maintenance. Q. How is Helipole different from steel and concrete poles? A. Steel poles are prone to corrosion and require regular repainting, especially in coastal areas. Concrete poles can crack, exposing internal steel that rusts and weakens the structure.
