Bahrain’s urban resilience framework has been praised following recent regional attacks, with an expert highlighting how smart cities are becoming the frontline in responding to modern crises. Bahrain Smart City Society President Dr Shaikha Fay bint Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Khalifa noted that in a world undergoing rapid geopolitical transformations, cities have become the arena in which nations’ resilience is tested – not only militarily, but also economically, environmentally, and socially. She said Bahrain can leverage AI in mobility and environmental monitoring to shift towards more proactive urban management, which is essential for long-term resilience. The remarks follows close on the heels of the regional Iranian attacks, which led to many urban facilities, including residential buildings and industrial areas in Bahrain being targeted. Many civilians had to temporarily move out of their homes and seek refuge at government provided shelters. A ceasefire was announced on April 8 and has since been extended to allow for further negotiations. Amid the uncertainty of the war, Bahrain’s defence and civic framework, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad and with the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, stood out as a model striving to balance digital transformation with urban sustainability. “Bahrain demonstrates a relatively strong level of urban resilience, particularly when viewed through the lens of continuity rather than disruption,” Dr Shaikha Fay told the GDN. “The compact nature of the island, combined with integrated infrastructure systems, allows for efficient co-ordination and rapid response when needed,” she added. “The road network and spatial organisation of the island provides a level of flexibility in mobility, allowing movement to

Against the backdrop of macroeconomic headwinds, office market demand around the country grew in the first quarter of 2026, according to industry reports and commercial real estate specialists. The finance, technology and legal sectors led the growth, particularly in San Francisco and New York City. The VTS Office Demand Index, or VODI, reached a post-pandemic index level high of 79 at the end of the quarter, an 18% quarter-over-quarter increase and a 13% year-over-year increase. VODI compares demand against pre-pandemic averages. Technology firm demand rose 109% year over year and accounted for a significant share of national growth, VTS said. Finance and legal sectors experienced quarterly gains of 54% and 41%, respectively. Labor outlooks for all three sectors remain robust, outpacing other office-using sectors, the report says. The gains come as total office-using employment, a key driver of office demand, dropped 0.5% year over year — a loss of 183,000 jobs since the first quarter of last year. The job opening rate in the information sector fell 3.25% in Q1 from 3.83% a year prior, with openings declining in other sectors as well. One reason office demand is rising as the labor market contracts is the leverage that slower hiring gives companies to mandate in-office work, VTS says. “Firms [can] mandate more on-site work and thus offset demand reduction,” it said. JLL said in-office mandate expansions gave its workplace management business a boost this last quarter. “Workplace management contract renewal rates are stable, and our pipeline is strong,” JLL CFO Kelly Howe said on an earnings call last week. “Client activity within project management remains healthy, particularly in the U.S., positioning us for continued momentum over the near term.” Going forward, if oil and gas prices stay high, employers’ return-to-office leverage could weaken as employees point to high commuting costs.

For most of modern history, economic growth has been tightly coupled with the use of fossil fuels. Cities now house more than half of the world’s population, and that urbanization has come hand-in-hand with ecological degradation, air pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions. But now, an assessment of 2,475 of the world’s biggest cities has found that in 80% of them, economic growth is no longer dependent on an increase in fossil-fuel-related emissions. The study, published today in Nature Cities1, used satellite data to measure levels of the greenhouse gas nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emitted from cities, and compared these data with information on gross domestic product (GDP). The findings indicate that almost 2,000 cities worldwide have implemented green policies that generated economic prosperity while reducing dependencies on fossil fuels. “This research is revealing the importance of cities in addressing twenty-first-century sustainability challenges,” says Michail Fragkias, an applied economist at Boise State University in Idaho, who was not involved in the work. Green cities In their study, Daniel Moran, an environmental economist at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research in Kjeller and his colleagues used satellite data from the European Union’s Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite mission to measure NO2 levels in the troposphere above cities between January 2019 and December 2024. NO2 is produced when fuel is burnt in vehicles, power plants and industrial facilities. Bhopal futuristic 'Algae Tree' goes viral. Internet is impressed Bhopal has installed a new technology called 'algae tree' at Swami Vivekananda Park under the Smart City initiative. The microalgae-based unit will be used to tackle pollution and heat. Bhopal has become the first city in India to install an “Algae Tree”, a futuristic carbon-capturing structure that claims to absorb as much carbon dioxide as 25 full-grown trees while releasing oxygen back into the atmosphere. The technology has been installed at Swami Vivekananda Park under the city’s Smart City initiative and is already drawing widespread attention online. As videos and photos of the installation spread across social media, many users have praised the project as a creative response to worsening pollution, urban heat and climate concerns. Developed by Mushroom World Group, the “Algae Tree” works using a microalgae-based system designed to absorb carbon dioxide from surrounding air and convert it into oxygen. According to the company, the project took nearly two years to develop and involved more than 50 researchers, engineers and specialists. What makes the structure stand out is its compact efficiency. The company claims a single unit can absorb nearly 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, roughly equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of around 25 mature trees. Solar panels have also been installed on top of the structure, allowing it to partially operate using renewable energy. Videos of the installation have flooded social media platforms where people praised the initiative and termed it as futuristic. The installation comes at a time when Indian cities are grappling with rising temperatures, worsening air quality and shrinking green cover. Back then, it felt as if the project needed to be monitored because of how it could transform India into a country envied by the world, instead of how it is usually looked at. Now, it appears as if we can finally forget about that ambitious plan and move on, because we have a new accolade to be proud of. A couple of weeks ago, it emerged that 95 of the world’s 100 hottest cities now belong to India. It was framed like a bad thing by those annoying foreign reporters, but I would humbly put forth the suggestion that this is something every patriot should be proud to broadcast. Muscat: The 21st edition of Oman Real Estate, Design & Build Exhibition and Conference 2026 commenced on Sunday at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC), taking place from 10 to 13 May. The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Sultan Salim Al Habsi, Minister of Finance. The event is organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, in partnership with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, Oman Real Estate Association, and Connect Company. The event saw broad participation from ministers, senior officials, real estate developers, investors, experts, and leading local and international companies specialising in real estate development, urban planning, design, and construction. As Oman’s real estate and urban development sectors are witnessing accelerated momentum and transformative growth aligned with national objectives, the conference and exhibition serves as a key gathering point for industry stakeholders, fostering strategic partnerships, unlocking broader investment opportunities, and reinforcing Oman’s growing position on the regional real estate and urban development landscape. Organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning in partnership with the Oman Real Estate Association and Connect, the four-day event highlights Oman’s accelerating urban transformation and growing appeal as a regional hub for sustainable real estate investment. The exhibition serves as a platform to showcase major urban projects, integrated communities and investment opportunities, while strengthening collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders. Visitors are also exploring residential projects, financing solutions and modern construction technologies presented by leading local and international companies. A major highlight of the opening ceremony was the announcement of several strategic agreements linked to future cities and integrated developments, particularly Sultan Haitham City. The ministry signed an agreement with Retal Development Company to develop residential neighbourhoods 3, 15 and 17 within Sultan Haitham City over an area exceeding 640,000 square metres, with investments surpassing RO 320 million.
