The trucks can drive on highways or surface streets. Using dynamic routing, Gatik can react to new and changing delivery demands. According to Gatik, it has conducted over 85,000 full driverless deliveries to date and has a 99% on-time delivery performance. It has recently signed over $600 million in contracted revenue, which signals that demand for autonomous freight is on the rise for commercial use. Its trucks are manufactured by Isuzu Motors, and Gatik started off with a small focus on fixed, low (less than ten miles) delivery routes. Commercial Demand Drives Gatik Expansion Its network has since expanded to dynamic routes covering up to 400 miles. The vehicles can also operate across different weather and road conditions. Tesla's FSD Lite Seems To Have A Hard Time Seeing Trees And Logs Two different users on X posted videos of their cars failing to see downed trees in the middle of the road. - On X, two drivers posted videos of FSD Lite v14.1 not stopping for objects in the road, namely fallen trees and wooden logs. - FSD Lite is designed to run on Tesla's Hardware 3, which has significantly less computing power compared to Hardware 4 used in later cars. - FSD Lite was introduced this June. As Tesla tries to scale up its fleet of self-driving cars and roll out the steering wheel-free Cybercab, Full Self-Driving (Supervised) continues to stumble in serious ways. One video posted on X on August 21 shows a user named Baldersonmichae using FSD on the road at night. Ahead of him, there’s a fallen tree in the middle of the road, but the car doesn’t seem to notice the large mess of branches and leaves and does not slow down. The driver intervenes and manually stops the car to avoid a collision. This apparently wasn’t a one-off, either. The driver says he tried the same exact spot three more times, all with the same result. Further down in the comments, another Tesla owner posted a video that purports to show his FSD-equipped car hitting a big log at 32 mph without stopping. Both drivers say they were running what’s known as FSD v14.1 Lite. This new version of the software is specifically designed to run on cars that use Tesla’s Hardware 3 system. Hardware 3 was introduced in 2019 and doesn’t offer the same performance as the Hardware 4 setup of computers and cameras that landed in cars post-2023. How Polaris Transportation Drives Cross-Border Logistics Success What the U.S.-Canada Trade War Means for Trucking Escalating U.S.-Canada tariffs could disrupt cross-border freight, reduce truck volumes, raise costs, and create new uncertainty for carriers on both sides of the border. Medium- and heavy-duty truck tariffs were among the major sticking points in U.S.-Canada trade talks last week, which broke down Friday, ratcheting up trade tensions between the wo countries. After talks fell through on Friday, President Trump imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion of the country’s exports on Saturday. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by saying the longtime allies were “at war” over trade and announced dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs on American goods starting Sept. 8. The two countries had appeared close to an agreement before negotiations collapsed late Friday. Although several issues remained unresolved, tariffs on medium- and heavy-duty vehicles were reportedly among the sticking points. The escalating dispute also raises new questions about the future of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which governs trade among the three countries. Trump Targets Canadian Auto Industry On Monday, Trump said tariffs on Canadian “cars, trucks, both large and small,” automotive parts and steel would increase to 50% on January 1. It was not immediately clear whether the reference to large trucks includes Class 8 commercial vehicles. Medium- and heavy-duty trucks already are subject to a separate 25% Section 232 tariff imposed in 2025. That tariff explicitly covers Classes 3 through 8, although USMCA-compliant trucks receive special treatment based on their U.S. content. Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles are specifically excluded from the new 50% tariffs on Canadian goods that took effect Aug. 22. What Went Wrong? WRC 2026 Data Wars: 1,900 Autonomous Mining Trucks Generate the Industry's Most Coveted "Dirty Data" At the World Robot Conference (WRC 2026) in Beijing's Yizhuang this August, humanoid robots sorted packages on conveyor belts and tightened screws at workstations—such "getting-things-done" scenarios have become as commonplace as theatrical demonstrations. But beneath this bright line of "deployment," a hidden thread about data is quietly determining the next phase of competition in the embodied intelligence industry. Unitree Robotics founder Wang Xingxing said something at the conference that nearly every vendor privately acknowledges: "However much data you have—especially high-quality data—that's how much AI capability you have." Humanoid robots' limbs can already run, jump, and do backflips, but their "brains" are still starving. One frequently cited statistic: China currently has only 500,000 hours of compliant real-world physical interaction data, while commercial robot deployment requires tens of millions of hours—a gap exceeding 99%. From hundreds of thousands to tens of millions, the difference spans two orders of magnitude. So players at WRC each showed their hand: some open-sourced human behavior data, some sold data-collection gloves, some bet on simulation, and some insisted on real-machine, real-world data. Beyond the noise, a few embodied intelligence companies with no booths and little attention are holding the industry's most scarce data. The Open-Source Camp: Turning Data Collection into a "Mass Movement" Lightwheel Intelligence made one of the biggest data-related moves at this year's WRC. Resistance to robotaxi expansion is growing in the US — The Verge Disputes over robotaxi operating rules are intensifying in a number of US states and cities: authorities, unions and activists are demanding stricter control over safety, fleet scaling and the technology’s impact on employment. As The Verge reports, commercial autonomous transportation remains banned in New York State after Governor Kathy Hochul withdrew a proposal to allow robotaxis outside New York City due to objections from taxi drivers, unions and lawmakers. In Washington, unions oppose a bill to legalize commercial robotaxis. The city council is considering a limit of 200 vehicles and a fee of 15 cents per mile traveled. The funds are expected to be directed toward upgrading Metro and supporting workers who may be displaced by automation. The city council’s hearing on the initiative in July lasted 10 hours. Safety and city control San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, who supports robotaxis, called for stronger regulation after incidents in which Waymo vehicles caused traffic jams during emergencies and major events. Since July, California police have also been able to officially hold autonomous vehicle manufacturers accountable for traffic violations committed by their driverless cars. Driverless vehicle testing in Kazakhstan may face delays Kazakhstan has approved rules for a pilot project to introduce driverless cars; however, they are unlikely to be tested this year, according to Kolesa.kz.according to Kolesa.kz. The three-year pilot project is planned for Astana, Almaty and Kosshy, as well as at testing facilities and on designated public roads. Passenger cars and vans with conditional or high driving automation will be tested. Requirements To participate in the testing, a vehicle must obtain a safety certificate for the construction of a motor vehicle (SBKTS) and be registered with a corresponding notation on its vehicle registration certificate. Vehicles must be equipped with systems that continuously record data from automated driving sensors, as well as cameras inside and outside the vehicle, and must allow the driver or a remote operator to disable the autopilot in an emergency. In addition, the vehicle must display a special «Autonomous Control» sign, and passengers must be able to contact the support service. Before taking to public roads, the vehicle must successfully complete at least 100 hours of testing at a testing facility. 100 accident-free rides After being approved for road use, the vehicles will be allowed to operate as taxis without an operator on board. Rides can be booked through dedicated apps or aggregators. Each driverless vehicle must be insured against third-party liability, including liability to passengers, for 60 million tenge (approx. $131,293). In the event of a road accident, information must be reported to 102, the police emergency number. The circumstances of the accident will be determined in part using video camera footage. During road tests, driverless vehicles must travel at least 10,000 kilometers and complete at least 100 passenger rides without accidents caused by the automated system. The US Army has taken an unusual route to drone defense by enabling a Ford F-250 pick-up truck to be capable of driving itself while carrying a shotgun-armed turret. Showcased during a live-fire exercise, the reconfigured vehicle featured a Forterra AutoDrive autonomy system and an Edda weapon station from Austin-based firm 9 Mothers. The truck supports automated obstacle reduction, the US Army’s term for clearing lanes through minefields, wire, and other barriers so troops can advance safely. Its Edda turret is built to detect drones through sound, with an onboard visual tracking system taking over once it confirms an inbound target. Weighing about 23 kilograms (50 pounds), the turret can reportedly engage fast-moving targets as small as 7 inches (18 centimeters) that are as far out as 100 meters (328 feet). The system is engineered to remain passive before firing, meaning the turret does not emit signals that enemies could capture to identify its position. From Prototypes to Operational Models The truck was trialled as part of Project Sandhills 2.0, which focuses on transitioning prototypes into deployable assets the US Army can use on the field. The live-fire tests were held at Range 63 of Fort Bragg, with Forterra becoming part of the demo after its inclusion in previous US Army exercises. Forterra is currently under contract to deliver autonomous mission systems compatible with Ford’s F-250 trucks.

China’s mining equipment industry has unveiled another major step toward electrification with the launch of the Zijin Longking ZL230E, a battery-electric haul truck capable of carrying up to 230 tonnes of material. Unveiled in Longyan City, Fujian Province, the ZL230E is designed for intensive, around-the-clock operation at ultra-large open-pit mines. With a 120-tonne net weight and a maximum gross vehicle weight of about 350 tonnes, it ranks among the largest battery-electric mining trucks developed in China. The three-axle truck combines a massive battery pack, high-power electric motors and advanced drive technology to tackle long-haul routes, steep gradients and demanding mine-site conditions without relying on diesel fuel. The ZL230E was developed by Zijin Longking, an equipment manufacturer controlled by Zijin, with the company targeting large-scale mining operations where high payload capacity and continuous availability are critical. Its 125-cubic-meter heaped bucket can carry up to 230 tonnes of material. The truck is engineered for loaded uphill travel and long haul routes while maintaining high reliability and low energy consumption. Power comes from two 800-kilowatt electric motors, with the multi-axle independent-drive system distributing power to the individual axles. The control system continuously adjusts torque and power output to maintain performance on gradients and in difficult operating conditions. The truck is also equipped with a battery system with approximately 1,400 kWh of capacity. According to Zijin Longking, the high-capacity battery can be charged from 10% to 90% in about 25 minutes. That rapid charging capability is particularly important for mining operations, where vehicle downtime can have a direct impact on productivity.
