A pair of permits issued last year that allowed Waymo to test its autonomous vehicle technology in parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan expired March 31, a Department of Transportation spokesperson confirmed to THE CITY Friday. But it’s unclear what comes next in New York for the company’s so-called robotaxis that are already in use without drivers in 10 U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Houston and Los Angeles. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has not yet articulated a position on the technology, whose testing was given the green light last August by his predecessor at City Hall, Eric Adams. A City Hall spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment from THE CITY. Waymo, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, had been operating eight robot cars — with a “trained safety specialist” behind the wheel at all times — in Downtown Brooklyn and south of 112th Street in Manhattan since last year. Better driving by design: Purdue-Led NSF CHORUS Center makes autonomous systems stay safe There were more than 1,000 crashes involving vehicles equipped with automated driving systems or Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems in the first half of 2025, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Whether on highways or farms, automated systems must remain safe despite sensor failures, GPS disruptions, network dropouts or even cyber-attacks. That’s why Purdue University is leading CHORUS, a multi-institution research center funded by a $7 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, to build resilience into cyber-physical systems (CPS). The name is inspired by the Egyptian god Horus, who symbolizes protection from disasters, with the “C” added to emphasize the center’s cyber focus. “With CHORUS, we want to give cities and transportation agencies a scientific way to reason about how their cyber-physical systems behave under stress from cyberattacks, equipment failures, or simple human error,” said Saurabh Bagchi, CHORUS director and professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue’s Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) in the College of Engineering (COE). “Our goal is for CHORUS to help multiple stakeholders coordinate their defenses, so connected and autonomous transportation can remain safe and reliable when such perturbations are inevitable.” CHORUS addresses a fundamental challenge: building dependable connected and autonomous transportation systems (CATS) when every component, including hardware, software, communication links and human operators, is inherently imperfect. FairPrice Group trials Singapore’s first autonomous vehicle supply route The pilot covers a 6km round trip. FairPrice Group (FPG) has started piloting Singapore’s first autonomous vehicle (AV) route to move goods between its distribution centre and Pokka’s warehouse in Benoi, a 6km round trip. FPG began trials on 25 February 2026. Once approved by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for fully remote operations, the route will rely entirely on AVs to transport goods from Pokka’s warehouse to FPG’s distribution centre. The pilot forms part of FPG’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its supply chain operations and ensure supermarket shelves are stocked more efficiently for customers. If successful, the group plans to expand similar AV routes with other suppliers across Singapore. Currently, FPG operates AVs to transport palletised goods between its distribution centres, completing over 100 trips weekly, each carrying up to 1.5 tonnes of ambient produce, packaged products, and essentials. The group’s fleet includes seven AVs, with plans to expand to nearly 30 in the coming years. Each AV reduces CO2 emissions by 27 tonnes annually and allows staff to focus on more complex tasks. Beyond AVs, FPG plans to grow its broader electric vehicle fleet to over 160 EVs by 2030. NTSB investigating another incident of Waymo passing Austin ISD school bus | kvue.com

AUSTIN, Texas — Federal regulators are investigating another instance of a driverless car passing a stopped Austin ISD school bus. On Friday, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced that it launched an investigation into an incident that occurred on March 25. The agency said that it was contacted by Austin ISD, who reported that a Waymo vehicle had passed a bus that was stopped to load and unload students. It is currently unclear where the incident happened. In Texas, all cars must stop until the lights stop flashing and the arm is retracted, even if the car is on the other side of the road, if there is not a physical lane divider. In December, KVUE first reported that several cars in the company's fleet were shown on camera illegally passing Austin ISD school buses. In each scenario, the buses were stopped with their red lights flashing and stop arms extended. The NTSB launched a safety investigation into Waymo in January, following reports that the company's autonomous vehicles had passed stopped Austin ISD school buses while students are loading and unloading. The NTSB investigation cited an incident that occurred on Jan. 12, when a bus was stopping to pick up students on Oltorf Street near Interstate 35 in South Austin. According to the investigation, the Waymo vehicle initially stopped, but then three other vehicles passed the bus illegally. The vehicle contacted remote assistance, asking, "Is this a school bus with active signals?" A person who was working as a remote assistance agent in another state answered "no." The Waymo then passed the bus despite its stop arms being extended. There's a Toyota with 391 miles of range and 268 horsepower for under $18000

Toyota and BYD are producing an EV with 268 horsepower and up to 391 miles of range for less than $18,000. The problem is, it’s not for sale in the United States. The cut-price Toyota bZ5 was built for the Chinese market. It’s built on the e-TNGA platform, a joint venture between Toyota and fellow Japanese manufacturer Subaru. Which means you may see shades of it in the upcoming electric Highlander and the Subaru Getaway. BYD is supplying the battery, which may be a contributing factor when it comes to the competitive range and low cost. That battery will allegedly charge from 30% to 80% in under half an hour. Despite the low price, the vehicle comes with a good amount of tech. Apparently Toyota’s Pilot L2+ semi-autonomous driving is included, along with a LiDAR sensor. Which not every manufacturer installs on their semi-autonomous vehicles. Infotainment centers around a 15.6 inch touchscreen. Of course, the US has its own version of the bZ, though it looks like a rougher deal. The American version of the BV does have more horsepower, with up to 315 on the top trim, though the base model only has 168. It lacks in range compared to its Chinese counterpart, with a full charge getting you 314 miles at best. It also starts at $36,350, around double the price of the Chinese version. But is there a chance that the US could get the half-price, stripped-down, Chinese model? Will we ever see a cheap Toyota bZ5 in the US? SpaceX has reportedly filed confidential paperwork for an initial public offering in which the company would raise $75 billion at a $1.75 trillion valuation. And according to CEO Elon Musk, orbital data centers will be a big part of SpaceX’s future. On the latest episode of TechCrunch’s Equity podcast, Kirsten Korosec, Sean O’Kane, and I discussed Musk’s vision, as well as other companies that are pursuing similar goals. In early March, Associated Press reported that London’s streets are expected to welcome robotaxis soon, while in mid-February dpa said that German carmaker Volkswagen is preparing to launch self-driving minivans in a third European city and its first outside Germany. At the end of 2025, Toyota opened an experimental “Woven City” in Japan featuring autonomous cars and robots. But where does Bulgaria stand in this process and will autonomous vehicles soon appear on Bulgarian streets? In response to a BTA inquiry about the development of intelligent transport systems (ITS) in Bulgaria, the Ministry of Transport and Communications said the country is at a key stage in deploying these technologies. The requirements of Directive 2010/40/EU, which establishes a framework for the development of ITS in Europe, have been implemented, along with its amendment – Directive (EU) 2023/2661, which prepares Member States for connected and automated mobility, including autonomous vehicles. According to the directive, cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) need to be developed, enabling vehicles to “communicate” with each other and with road infrastructure. This will allow drivers and autonomous vehicles to receive information and warnings about road hazards, handle more complex traffic situations, and facilitate safe autonomous driving. The Ministry noted that amendments adopted in 2025 to the Ordinance on the conditions and procedure for the deployment of intelligent transport systems, along with the Public Transport Act, have created the necessary conditions to accelerate the introduction of ITS in the country. Would you still jump in a Waymo if your ride pulled up the wrong way through a drive-thru? That was the bizarre dilemma facing a Los Angeles woman on Friday when a driverless car operated by Waymo, the self-driving arm of Google parent company Alphabet, went off-script and entered a drive-thru the wrong way without slowing. The woman’s son was there as the Waymo ignored the matrix and kept gliding down the wrong-way entry. His commentary caught the spectacle on video as the self-driving car made its unconventional entrance. “Way Way! You gotta go through the drive thru the other way!” he can be heard shouting as the car approached. “My bad, bro, you can’t park here,” he joked as the vehicle rolled into position. Despite the unconventionally arrival, his mom didn’t hesitate to jump aboard. “God, Mom, be safe!” he added as she climbed into the vehicle. .No one knows exactly what caused the mishap, but the strange pickup is the latest example of the real-world challenges facing autonomous vehicles. During the February floods in Los Angeles, Waymo vehicles were caught stranded in rising waters as heavy rain pounded the city. As the Missouri Legislature debates whether or not to allow autonomous vehicles to have access to the state’s roads, some say the benefits for the disabled community would be immense. Things most Missourians take for granted, like easy access to transportation, are huge barriers for more than 900,000 Missourians with disabilities, according to Lori Becker, chief executive director of the Starkloff Disability Institute in St. Louis. House Bill 2069, sponsored by Rep. Brandon Phelps, R-Warrensburg, would provide a legal framework for companies — namely, the California-based self-driving taxi service Waymo — to come to Missouri. Waymo has announced it would like to bring its services to St. Louis, and eventually the whole state. Officials from the company told the House Emerging Issues Committee in January that they were already collecting street data in special cars to allow their artificial intelligence systems to adapt to the city. The House supported Phelp’s bill with bipartisan support (and over bipartisan reservations) and sent it to the Senate on March 12.
