These test vehicles are just a stopgap, prepping the city for the fully autonomous, bidirectional Zoox shuttles that allow passengers to face each other rather than sit in traditional rows. In other words, it’s like a miniature boardroom on wheels. For anyone who wants to weigh in on the future of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority’s Downtown Skyway and autonomous shuttle system, there’s a deadline on Friday. JTA officials are asking Jacksonville area residents and business owners to take its online survey on five alternatives proposals on how Downtown’s elevated monorail system should be modernized or retired as part phase II of its Ultimate Urban Circulator program, known as the U2C. The survey will also help the agency determine how to complete buildout on its Neighborhood Autonomous Vehicle Innovations shuttle system, or NAVI. Here are the options JTA is considering: - Keeping the Skyway system operating as it does today and finding a manufacturer to repair, rehab and rebuild the vehicle fleet back to the original form. - Replace the current Skyway system with a new fleet of modern autonomous people moving trains. - Convert the track and system to autonomous vehicles. - Remove the Skyway structure and operate autonomous vehicles on existing streets. - Repurpose the Skyway as a multiuse trail and operate autonomous vehicles on existing streets. After the surveys close Friday, JTA will analyze the alternatives. In May, there will be a second round of public meetings on the results. June is when the JTA board will weigh in and select an alternative. By August, the agency wants to have a Project Development and Environment study completed that will include new cost estimates for the U2C with the selected Skyway alternative. SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- In downtown Chicago, people have been spotting Google’s Waymo automated vehicles testing and mapping the Windy City’s streets. For now, the autonomous vehicles must be driven by a human, as the industry seeks the endorsement of state lawmakers. For the last year, legislators in Springfield have been trying to work through a variety of issues raised by skeptics of the autonomous vehicles, known as AVs. Rep. Kam Buckner, D-Chicago, said AV legislation has a long road ahead to address constituent concerns over safety, insurance and job losses for rideshare and cab drivers. In January, he introduced the Autonomous Vehicle Pilot Project Act, which would open counties in Illinois with over 1 million residents, as well as the counties of Sangamon, Madison, St. Clair, and Monroe, to automated commercial vehicles. But the bill has since been held up in the Rules Committee, an early step in the process that means it’s far from passage, especially in the current legislative session. Other bills supporting the industry also have yet to get the necessary support. While Waymo has started testing its vehicles with safety drivers in Chicago, the company has not yet announced plans to bring the robotaxis to counties other than Cook, according to Waymo spokesperson Chris Bonelli. Waymo only fully operates in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia and Texas — warm weather states where concerns about handling icy conditions are not as big an issue. The company has faced significant questions over the safety of its vehicles and fully automated taxis. A subsidiary of Alphabet, Waymo is under multiple federal investigations for traffic violations, including illegally passing stopped school buses. Waymo has been in Nashville for months, first manually driving, then testing its self-driving software with a human safety operator behind the wheel — all in preparation of launching a robotaxi service in the city. That day has arrived, making Nashville the 11th city where the public can hail a Waymo robotaxi. Waymo said Tuesday it has opened its robotaxi service to the public. However, Waymo is still taking the slow-roll approach. Waymo spokesperson Chris Pappas told TechCrunch the company will begin inviting riders on a rolling basis to allow it to “thoughtfully scale while delivering a consistent, high-quality experience.” Waymo will initially operate in a 60-square-mile area of Nashville. Pappas didn’t share exactly how many robotaxis will serve that area, only noting the company has “dozens of vehicles” available in Nashville. The Nashville launch also comes with a partner. But this time, it’s not Uber, the ride-hailing company that has partnered with Waymo in Austin, Atlanta, and Phoenix. Lyft is Waymo’s partner in Nashville, and there is a notable difference in how the service will work in the city. In Nashville, riders will initially hail rides directly through the Waymo app. Once the service expands, Waymo will also make its self-driving vehicles available through the Lyft app. Lyft has said it will handle fleet services, such as vehicle readiness and maintenance, charging infrastructure, and depot operations, through its wholly owned subsidiary Flexdrive. What they're saying: "I love ducks. I think they're so cute," said Austin resident Faith Allen. Ducks are a staple of the Mueller community. From their images featured on local business signs, to menu items, to, of course, the real ones waddling around the lake. Alex Benbow works at Whichcraft Tap Room & Bottle Shop, where he says one female duck was a regular. "She likes to hang out in that little pot over there, and she just kind of hangs out and people bring her bread and food and water and, you know, make sure she's taken care of," said Benbow. "She's a local legend." Until she stopped showing up. A Mueller resident posted in a community Facebook group saying he saw an Avride self-driving car run over and kill a duck near the park last Tuesday. The post claims the vehicle never slowed down and kept driving. That man also alleges that prior to that, the car failed to stop at a stop sign, almost hitting his car. Avride's website states its vehicles are designed to be safer than human drivers with a 360-degree view of the cars, never tire, get distracted or break rules. Apple delivered a record-breaking quarter built on hardware demand and a growing services flywheel while Tesla reported shrinking revenue, collapsing net income, and a pivot story that remains more promise than proof. In this article, we compare the two giants. iPhone Records and Energy Wins Tell Two Very Different Stories Apple’s quarter was defined by iPhone. iPhone revenue reached $85.27 billion, up 23.3% year over year, making it the best iPhone quarter in company history. As offshore energy infrastructure expands and ages, operators are under increasing pressure to monitor pipelines, cables, and seabed assets more efficiently. Advances in subsea robotics, autonomous vehicles, and digital data platforms are beginning to reshape how offshore inspection, maintenance, and survey work is conducted. Across the oil and gas sector in the Gulf and emerging offshore wind regions, companies are investing in systems that reduce vessel days, limit personnel offshore, and accelerate the flow of subsea data from the seabed to decision-makers. For Houston-based Oceaneering International, that transformation is centered on three technological themes. “When we’re talking about subsea, there are three key themes we are working on, which we see will become very prominent in the next 10 years,” said Nikunj Patel, Oceaneering’s vice president of engineering and operations. “They are already very important… and those are what we call remote operations, autonomy, and residency.” Together, those trends point toward a future where subsea robotic systems operate longer, gather more data, and increasingly work with fewer personnel offshore. REMOTE OPERATIONS One of the most immediate changes in subsea operations is the rise of remote piloting for underwater vehicles. Traditional remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operations require pilots and technicians stationed onboard offshore support vessels. Today, thanks to improved satellite communications and subsea connectivity, many of those roles can be transitioned to shore. “So when we’re talking about remote offshore operations, a simple example in Norway, almost 60% of the piloting work we do, we do from onshore,” Patel said. In these scenarios, ROVs operate thousands of feet below the surface while pilots control them from offices miles away. According to Patel, remote ROV operations unlock several key advantages. “Cost is definitely an advantage for the customer.
