Uber faces fine of nearly $1B over <b>automated</b> driver suspensions

The Dutch Data Protection Authority is fining Uber €825 million (around $966 million) — the second largest penalty issued so far under Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation, according to Reuters. The Dutch regulator was investigating complaints that Uber had deactivated driver accounts through an automated process without sufficient warning or human oversight. In a statement, deputy chair Monique Verdier said that the company had “committed serious infringements.” “A computer should not make decisions on its own that have [such] major consequences,” Verdier said. Uber, however, argued that most driver suspensions are brief, that no permanent deactivations take place without human review, and that drivers have the ability to appeal. (Dutch regulators said some drivers were permanently deactivated without human review, which Uber disputes.) The company said it will appeal the decision. “We strongly disagree with this decision and disproportionate fine,” an Uber spokesperson told Reuters. TechCrunch has reached out to the company for additional comment. Brahim Ben Ali, a former Uber driver in France, told the Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant that after his account was deactivated in 2019, he collected testimonies from 170 other Uber drivers and eventually brought his complaint to the Netherlands, where Uber’s European headquarters are located. Ben Ali was assisted in this effort by a Swiss nonprofit focused on digital rights called PersonalData.io, which helped the drivers collect data about how the deactivation decisions were made. Founder Paul-Olivier Dehaye said a driver “can complete a thousand journeys with satisfied passengers, but if just one person reports a very serious problem, the consequences can be enormous.” Dehaye told me that this is the third fine that the Dutch regulator has levied on Uber, following a €290 million fine over its handling of drivers’ personal data and a €10 million fine stemming from related issues. Parked Waymo vehicles are recording Nashville neighborhoods, churches, businesses and parks every day without any public guidelines on how long footage is stored, and minimal details on how it is used. Since the company fully launched in Nashville in June, more than 50 white, driverless Jaguars with out-of-state plates and large, spinning sensors shaped like top hats on their roofs have been carting people around Nashville, saturating downtown hotspots like the riverfront, Lower Broadway and Music Row. The vehicles use a combination of radar and LiDAR sensors, external audio and video from both the in-car camera system and the 29 external cameras to operate and train the vehicles when they're underway. But even when they are vacant, if the vehicles are running -- which is identifiable by the sensors spinning and whirring -- they are recording audio and 360-degree video to "continuously perceive the world around the vehicle." Ethan Teicher, a spokesperson for Waymo, told the Banner last week that the constant recording is necessary for the parked vehicles to respond to, say, emergency vehicles or other hazards when parked, but the vehicles "are engineered with privacy-by-design." "The sensors remain active while the vehicle is parked to maintain awareness of its surroundings and move from that location when required," Teicher continued. Asked how long the data recorded is stored, the company said it's too costly to store large amounts of random footage or audio that doesn't directly help train the vehicles or pertain to a specific incident, involving the Waymo or otherwise. When asked, the company did not provide any specific policy on when and how idly collected data is used, but rather said retention is determined on a case-by-case basis. Industrial PC maker Neousys Technology Inc (宸曜科技) expects strong growth in its edge artificial intelligence (AI) business from this year, driven by rising demand across manufacturing, transportation, semiconductors, defense and healthcare. Edge AI computers account for about 40 percent of its product mix, said Neousys, whose edge AI portfolio includes fanless industrial computers, graphics processing unit (GPU)-enabled AI systems and mission computers designed for harsh environments. The company expects edge AI-related revenue to grow 10 to 20 percent year-on-year this year, Neousys vice president Bryan Lan (藍林忠) said in an interview with the Taipei Times on Thursday. Following a Bloomberg report that the Department of Justice is investigating venture firm Andreessen Horowitz for holding board seats with rival AI companies, VCs told TechCrunch that they were baffled. On the latest episode of the Equity podcast, Kirsten Korosec, Sean O’Kane, and I were similarly puzzled by the news. Yes, VC conflicts-of-interest are worth taking seriously, but as Kirsten wondered, “Of all the things that the DOJ would focus on in terms of level of importance, why does this one rise to the top?” The news was also surprising because of a16z’s ties with the Trump administration, and because the firm has been so quiet about the investigation. Warnings were then displayed before potential hazards appeared. One took the form of a coloured marker, while another used an animated robot head which turned to look towards the danger. An initial experiment found distracted participants still performed significantly worse than a control group. PARENTS, devotees and community leaders in Brickfields fear ongoing road upgrading works along Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad could worsen congestion and restrict access to nearby schools and a Hindu temple. Their main concern is the conversion of one of the three existing lanes into a bicycle lane under Phase Two of the Brickfields improvement project. Under the project, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is narrowing the width of the road to 6.5m (or 3.25m for each lane) while introducing a 1.3m pedestrian walkway and 1.2m bicycle lane. The project, fronting SJK(T) Vivekananda and nearby Sri Sivan Alayam Brickfields temple, forms part of a busy travel route. SJK(T) Vivekananda Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) chairman Thamilalagan Suppiah said the road changes would remove space used by parents to park briefly to get their children. Thamilalagan said parents or private transport providers fetch the pupils between 12.50pm and 1.20pm. “The primary school has more than 300 pupils,” he said. “Parents have to park, walk into the school to get their children as primary pupils are not allowed to leave without supervision.” Thamilalagan said those unable to find parking would be forced to make a big circle along the one-way road system before returning to the school. If Waymo cars are Level 4 automation, what does it take to be a Level 5? It's less about an autonomous vehicle's capabilities and more about what conditions it can operate in. Seeing a car move through city traffic with no one in the driver's seat can make it feel like Waymo has already reached the highest possible level of automation. From a passenger's perspective, there's no steering, no monitoring and no need for a human to intervene. The vehicle handles the entire trip on its own. But under SAE's (Society of Automotive Engineers) driving automation framework, that capability is still Level 4 rather than the highest: Level 5. The key distinction isn't how "independent" the driving looks in practice, but where that independence is allowed to exist. At Level 4, the system can fully handle the driving task without human input — within a defined set of conditions and locations. Level 5 removes those boundaries entirely. Why Waymo is considered Level 4 automation Strictly speaking, it's the Waymo Driver, the company's automated driving system, that's classified as Level 4. The tech started out on divided highways because that’s likely when most people are going to be using it. (DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — Turkish armoured vehicle manufacturer FNSS has unveiled its U-MAV Multi-Purpose Modular Unmanned Amphibious Vehicle, introducing a heavy unmanned platform designed to take over some of the most dangerous tasks during the opening phase of amphibious assaults. The U-MAV was publicly unveiled at TEKNOFEST Mavi Vatan 2026, hosted by the Gölcük Naval Shipyard Command in Kocaeli, Türkiye, from August 20 to 23. Designed as a next-generation unmanned amphibious manoeuvre platform, U-MAV is intended to operate ahead of crewed assault forces during the critical transition from sea to a defended shoreline. Its central concept is straightforward: place an unmanned vehicle in the first wave, expose the machine rather than Marines to hostile coastal defences, and allow operators to remain at a safer distance. The platform has been developed to operate alongside the Marine Assault Vehicle (MAV), also known as ZAHA, which is already in service with the Turkish Naval Forces Command. Under the manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) concept, U-MAV can make initial contact with hostile coastal defences before crewed MAV/ZAHA vehicles begin their approach to the beach.
