For the first time, an autonomous EV might show up if you order an Uber in London. Uber and UK autonomous-driving startup Wayve have launched what they say is Britain’s first autonomous ride-hailing service. As of yesterday, riders who request an UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort may be matched with a Mustang Mach-E fitted with the Wayve AI Driver. The autonomous ride doesn’t cost extra, and passengers can accept it or switch to a regular Uber before the car arrives. The service covers trips across London, excluding airports. But this isn’t a fully driverless robotaxi service yet. There is still a trained, Transport for London-licensed driver behind the wheel, ready to take over if needed. More than 140,000 Londoners have already opted in through the Trip Preferences section of the Uber app, according to the companies. Riders use the app to unlock the Mach-E and start their trip, while screens inside show the car’s planned route and support 64 languages. There is also no guarantee you will be able to get a Cybercab when you request a ride through the Robotaxi app. Per the San Antonio Express, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has registered 420 robotaxis in Texas of which 375 are modified Model Ys and 45 are CyberCabs. How much will a Cybercab ride cost? We don’t know yet but the answer seems to be, it will vary. “We also use dynamic pricing to balance supply and demand. As we add more and more CyberCabs to our network, our average wait times are going to get lower and lower and lower, largely due to dynamic pricing. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will play a central role in research, education and workforce development. CARTA announced at a press conference that it received the funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program. The award will support the replacement of its downtown electric shuttles with autonomous vehicles, along with the infrastructure needed to operate them. The project will also create an autonomous vehicle command center and the Live-Learning Lab at CARTA’s Shuttle Park South, where UTC students and faculty will be able to study the technology as it operates on Chattanooga streets. The project will add to years of research by UTC’s Center for Urban Informatics and Progress (CUIP). “This project gives us an opportunity to really build on that foundation and have our faculty and students conduct research, develop new intellectual property, move that IP toward commercialization,” Chancellor Lori Bruce said at the press conference. Some are in PDFs the company released on Thursday, as well as in updated terms of service in its “Robotaxi” app. The rest were left for a select few die-hard fans to disseminate online. Tesla added its two-door, steering-wheel-free Cybercab to its robotaxi network on Thursday, offering its first rides to the public in Austin as the company races to expand its autonomous ride-hailing service. At an invite-only event in downtown Austin, Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's VP of AI, announced that the Cybercab was officially added to the company's public robotaxi fleet, which, up until now, consisted only of Tesla Model Ys. "You can go outside, take rides," he said, closing out the Thursday keynote. "Anyone can take rides. It's open to the entire public." Tesla didn't provide details on the initial size of the public Cybercab fleet. Records from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles show that Tesla has registered 45 Cybercabs as of Thursday. The Cybercab is Tesla's purpose-built robotaxi that can fit two passengers. Like Amazon's Zoox, the Cybercab is not built with a steering wheel or pedal. Videos posted online by Tesla influencers and content creators who were invited to the Austin event showed that the Cybercab can be hailed through the Robotaxi app. In a video posted by David Moss, an autonomous-vehicle content creator, Robotaxi users could open the car's butterfly doors through the app. After the riders enter the car, the doors closed automatically, Moss said in the video. The launch comes nearly two years after Tesla first unveiled the Cybercab at its "We, Robot" event in Burbank, California. The launch follows the system's successful completion of the University of Pretoria's independent Technology Readiness Level 4 validation programme, making it the first openpit Level 9 solution to achieve this milestone.
