The company’s latest robotics and autonomy research highlights growing investment in humanoid robots, drones and autonomous vehicle technologies designed to improve industrial efficiency, automate inspections and support increasingly independent machine operation. In manufacturing, humanoid robots are drawing increased attention for material handling, inspection and other industrial applications where human-like mobility and dexterity could help automate more variable tasks. IDTechEx said improvements in tactile sensing, lightweight materials and power efficiency remain critical development goals for humanoid systems. The research firm also identified several barriers slowing broader humanoid adoption, including fragmented supply chains, sensor durability limitations, inconsistent training data and a lack of established large-scale industrial use cases. Despite these pain points, IDTechEx reports that the industry has received increased attention, noting the future may see increased uptake of these robots, such as in automotive manufacturing. ATLANTA — For now, Waymo’s self-driving cars are parked, and not just in Atlanta. Recent flooding concerns prompted the pause. Lars Moravy, Tesla's vice president of vehicle engineering, left the door open for the luxury sedan and SUV model revivals in an interview with the "Ride the Lightning" podcast released this weekend. "It was just like: now is not the right time to keep this one going," he said about the decision to ax the cars. "That doesn't mean it goes away forever. Never say never." To be clear, Moravy did not say Tesla is actively working on a new Model S or Model X — but he also did not rule it out. He also offered a fresh reason for the car's discontinuation: global crash-test requirements. "Every five years or so, Euro NCAP updates their protocols," Moravy said, adding that Tesla wants to make "the safest cars on the road," which requires structural updates. The platform "was never designed for" some newer crash cases, he said, including small-overlap and offset tests. Everyone seems to be mad about Ferrari’s first electric vehicle. The vehicle is called Luce and was revealed on Monday. The design of the five-seater (gasp!) was led in large part by Jony Ive and the design firm he runs with Marc Newson, LoveFrom. While it ticks a lot of spec sheet boxes — it boasts 1,000 horsepower and the ability to hit 60 miles per hour in just over two seconds — it’s tracking to be the most mocked new vehicle since the Cybertruck. This widespread rejection of the wedge-shaped, Nissan-esque car covers seemingly the whole spectrum, too, from the typical flimsy knee-jerk reactions to the positively vitriolic. The company’s stock price is down, and even some of the most down-the-middle news outlets are admitting it in their own ways. (Bloomberg said the Luce is “quite a stretch.”) The question underneath all of this immediate backlash is singular: Who is the Luce for? Certainly it’s not for me, or for almost anyone reading this. The Luce will cost around $650,000, and this is Ferrari we’re talking about, so even if you have that kind of money, you’re dealing with a company that is, shall we say, selective about its customers. Is it for existing Ferrari owners? Typically, that answer is yes — more than 80% of the 14,000 people who bought a Ferrari last year already own one of its vehicles. It’s hard to imagine that crowd being sufficiently excited about a car that is so devoid of the fierce Ferrari angles that have adorned bedroom walls for decades. Is it for other car designers? Possibly. Car companies borrow ideas all the time, and there’s definitely plenty on the interior — which features a lot of clicky buttons and knobs, a marked departure for Ive — that I’d personally

Volvo Cars reached an agreement with the Trump administration that exempts the automaker from a U.S. crackdown on Chinese-connected vehicle technology. The Swedish automaker, which is majority owned by China’s Geely Holding, said Tuesday that it received specific authorization from the U.S. Department of Commerce to continue importing and selling vehicles with Chinese connected car technology in the United States. But Volvo’s ties to China’s Geely — and its manufacturing operations in the country — meant it would be banned under the new rules.
