ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Waymo has paused its services in Atlanta after one of its autonomous vehicles got stuck during heavy downpours in the city.
According to Waymo, there was no one in the vehicle when it was stuck Wednesday afternoon.
The rideshare company said services are paused to monitor weather conditions and will resume when it is safe to do so.
“Safety is Waymo’s top priority, both for our riders and everyone we share the road with. During a period of intense rain today in Atlanta, an unoccupied Waymo vehicle encountered a flooded road and stopped. The vehicle has been recovered and removed from the scene,” a Waymo spokesperson said.

ATLANTA — Waymo confirmed to Channel 2 Action News on Wednesday evening that it has paused service for its vehicles until the rainy weather that blanked the area moves out, and they deem it safe for the cars to hit the road again. The Waymo ended up getting stuck along North Avenue near Argonne Avenue in midtown on Wednesday around 6 p.m. According to the company, no one was inside as the flood water rose almost to the top of the car’s wheel wells. Ayesha Imran wasn’t so lucky. She, too, got stuck in the flood water, and a good Samaritan came to her rescue. “It was really scary,” she told Channel 2’s Courtney Francisco. “The water level kept rising because it was like pouring down. I had to lock my car, so the door didn’t accidentally pop open for me to fall inside. There could have been wires there – anything,” Imran said. Firefighters were finally able to make it to the Waymo and Imran. She told Francisco that she did not catch her rescuer’s name, but she had a message for them: “Thank you so much. You really were a godsend, and you helped me get out,” Imran said. We contacted Waymo about the incident. ATLANTA — Waymo has temporarily paused its service in Atlanta after one of its unoccupied autonomous vehicles became stranded in floodwaters during heavy rain on Tuesday. A spokesperson for the company said safety remains the top priority “for both our riders and everyone we share the road with.” According to the company, the vehicle encountered a flooded roadway during what it described as an intense and unexpected period of rainfall across the city. The spokesperson said the vehicle stopped after entering the flooded area and was later recovered and removed from the scene. No passengers were inside the vehicle at the time, and no injuries were reported. A photo of the Waymo driving directly into a massive flood zone was captured by an 11Alive viewer and sent in to us. The vehicle then stalled out before later being cleared and driven away by a person after the flood waters receded after about an hour. Waymo said the rapid onset of the storm created conditions before the National Weather Service had issued any flash flood warning, watch or advisory and before other operational safety measures had been triggered. The company added that it had already implemented operational changes related to flooding following a recent recall and is continuing to develop additional software updates aimed at improving vehicle performance around flooded roads. Waymo said its Atlanta service will remain paused while crews monitor weather and roadway conditions. The company said operations will resume once conditions are considered safe. Malta adds 40 electric buses and launches autonomous shuttle trials Let’s first look at the new electric buses. These will be operated by Malta Public Transport and are intended to further electrify the operator’s fleet, which the government said will eventually more than double in size. The investment also supports Malta’s objective of deploying a fully electric public transport fleet on the island of Gozo. While the bus manufacturer was not named in the government’s press release, images released alongside the announcement show buses from Chinese manufacturer King Long. However, the exact model is not identifiable, but they are likely 12-meter electric buses, as that model had already been added to the fleet in 2023. “This marks another significant step towards cleaner and more technologically advanced public transport,” said Transport Minister Chris Bonett. He added that the initiative forms part of the wider Malta in Motion strategy, which includes investment in public transport, upgraded infrastructure, innovative technologies and sustainable mobility solutions. In 2023, Malta had already put 30 electric buses and a charging depot with a total output of 3 megawatts into operation. Bonett described the programme as evidence that the Malta in Motion plan is being implemented in practice. “This is not a plan or presentation on paper, but a vision being built step by step, investment after investment,” he said. Earlier this year, NVIDIA announced that it had expanded its high-tech solutions for automakers to include autonomous drive-ready software. In simplest terms, purchasing and implementing NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion architecture and full‑stack NVIDIA DRIVE AV L4 software turns vehicles into robotaxis without automakers having to develop the tech themselves. Unlike other autonomous vehicle solution providers, NVIDIA’s technology comes in a standardized package. And, it’s able to digest information approximately 42 percent faster than its closest competitor. This turnkey-like solution to autonomous vehicles is the reason why NVIDIA is Newsweek’s World’s Greatest Auto Disruptors Research and Development Disruptor of the Year. Companies liken NVIDIA’s solution to being the brains of the behind-the-scenes operation of a vehicle. The “brain” sends commands to the vehicle’s drive system components (steering, accelerating and braking, among them) to cause the vehicle to navigate a set route, when enabled. Automakers are able to customize a number of the system’s key elements, including how the vehicle perceives, plans and acts to match their brand guidelines, vehicle type and operational design domain. Crucially, the system is adaptable for various levels of autonomy, from Level 2++ to Level 4. A Level 2++ designation, a marketing term derived from the SAE Level 2 standard, indicates that a vehicle is able to handle steering, braking and lane change operations on highways and city streets. Level 4 autonomy is designated for capability that is highly automated where a vehicle handles all driving tasks within a geofenced area without human intervention. Mercedes-Benz was the first automaker to roll out the full suite of NVIDIA technology in its vehicles, implementing it in the new CLA sedan. Electric vehicles, artificial intelligence (AI), tightening federal regulation, and a new-car affordability crisis are reshaping the business from the ground up. Meanwhile, the average American new-car dealer is more than 70 years old, and manufacturer consolidation continues to put pressure on independent, family-owned dealerships. The Missouri Automobile Dealers Association saw the leadership gap coming and built its NextGen program to close it. On this episode of Inside Automotive, we’re joined by MADA President and CEO Doug Smith; Chairman Nick Anderson, who also serves as Chair of the NextGen Committee; and Committee Members Kyle Weymuth, Alex Thompson, and Megan Sinclair Rosso. MADA’s NextGen Committee looks to the future MADA represents 368 new-car dealerships across Missouri. Roughly 80% of those are multi-generational, family-owned operations. As average dealer age climbs, MADA president and CEO Doug Smith says the association wanted a structured way to bring younger dealers into the fold. “Getting them to come to our events was pretty easy. It just simply took an invitation, a personal invite from us. And these guys have hit the ground running,” Smith said. Alphabet's (GOOGL +0.38%) (GOOG +0.00%) Waymo recently issued a voluntary recall of its autonomous vehicles (AVs) -- about 3,800 in all -- which got a lot of attention. Apparently, when a self-driving car drives itself into a flooded road (thankfully, with no one inside) and gets swept away into a creek, people understandably freak out a little. But the mishap, along with additional reports of some Waymo vehicles struggling to navigate heavy rain and flooded roads, is likely a temporary issue for the company rather than an ongoing problem. And it's unlikely to negatively impact the company's long-term potential to tap into the nearly $2 trillion global AV market taking shape between now and 2035. How deep do you think that water is? After a handful of Waymos made very public driving mistakes in bad weather, the NHTSA began an initial probe in April. That led to Waymo issuing a voluntary recall, meaning the company proactively took its AV fleet off the streets in the 11 cities where it operates to address the issues. That's important to highlight because Waymo has, from the beginning of its formerly named Google self-driving car project, been very focused on safety. It may seem to some riders that Waymo cars are just popping up overnight in new cities, but the company has tested its AV software for more than a decade, with millions of real-world miles driven and billions of digital miles logged. Like any software (or human), Waymo's AVs can make mistakes. And it's not the first time Waymo AVs have. The vehicles were reported to have passed stopped school buses in error earlier this year. IN FOCUS: Can driverless buses become a mainstay on Singapore’s roads? It has been 12 years since the first autonomous vehicle trials were conducted in Singapore. SINGAPORE: When bus driver Muhammad Naz Farihin travelled on an autonomous vehicle as part of a trial in Punggol this year, he was surprised by how closely it resembled a ride with a human driver. “I was actually very impressed, if you were to close your eyes and mind your own business, have a conversation, you won’t actually realise the vehicle was autonomous,” said the 29-year-old. The driver from private bus company A&S Transit said the vehicle responded quickly and decisively to other road users, pedestrians and obstacles. “The best way to describe this is that they are as good as a (probation) plate driver making judgments on the roads. They’re learning and preparing,” he said. But while the technology impressed him, Mr Naz is not worried that autonomous vehicles will replace his job any time soon. In his seven years on the road, he has encountered too many situations where a human touch was essential, and he remains convinced that technology cannot yet replace it. “As a bus captain, you are more customer-oriented; you have to address a wide diversity of passengers you serve, be it the elderly, the young, or those that require special assistance,” he said. “This is something a driverless vehicle will not be able to handle.” Mr Naz is not alone in wondering how quickly autonomous vehicle (AV) technology can become part of everyday life in Singapore. Nuro on Tuesday named Michael Mancini as its new Chief Financial Officer — ending a roughly 32-month vacancy in the senior finance role that has spanned the autonomous driving startup’s most consequential commercial period. The appointment fills a seat that has been empty since Abi Viswanathan stepped down as Chief Financial Officer in September 2023, after holding the role for one year and nine months. Viswanathan briefly served as an advisor to Nuro on a part-time basis through December 2023 before leaving the company entirely — according to the executive’s LinkedIn profile. Mancini joins Nuro as the SoftBank-backed autonomous driving company prepares for the planned commercial launch of its robotaxi service with Lucid Motors and Uber in the San Francisco Bay Area later this year. The timeline has been maintained by Lucid, Uber, and Nuro management since the partnership was originally announced in July 2025. Students Build the Future of AI at Cal Poly Pomona's AI Fair & Hackathon At Cal Poly Pomona, students aren’t just exploring artificial intelligence, they’re building it. The 2026 AI Fair & Hackathon in April brought campus innovation to life, showcasing student creativity, industry collaboration, and the growing role of intelligent technologies in everyday life. Centered on the theme “Designing Tomorrow with AI, for Everyone,” students from across disciplines explored how AI is shaping the future through PolyX projects, club demonstrations, and hands-on competitions focused on accessibility, collaboration and real-world application. “The AI Fair is where students don’t just learn AI, they show what they’ve built,” said Alex Harwood, CPP’s associate vice president of advanced computing and chief technology officer. “From club projects to our AI Sandbox powering the SAAM robotics effort, and an exciting hackathon, it’s all student-driven, hands-on work that makes what’s possible immediately real.” Student clubs showcased projects ranging from an autonomous vehicle to a robot inspired by the one featured in the film “Interstellar.” Sign Bridge, developed by students from Team Voice&Hand, is a project that demonstrates AI’s potential to close real-world communication gaps. The working sign language interpreter translates hand movements into spoken words, addressing a critical need, as fewer than 1 percent of hearing individuals know sign language. Beyond the technical achievement, the team also explored usability improvements and conducted a market analysis, demonstrating the project’s potential real-world impact. The hackathon was a central feature of the event, challenging student teams to address real-world problems posed by industry partners alongside creative challenges developed by their peers. Judges evaluated projects based on creativity, impact, feasibility and storytelling. TURN SIGNAL Confessions of a (former) robotaxi hater I hated the idea of robotaxis, but they actually rule San Franciscans have gotten used to seeing cars without drivers crisscrossing their city. It will be the reality for the rest of us soon. The first time you see a car glide through a San Francisco intersection with no one behind the wheel, you hold your breath. Wait there long enough, however, and the sight becomes mundane. It’s not uncommon to see half a dozen Alphabet Waymos, Amazon Zooxes, and Tesla Robotaxis at the same light. They pause for pedestrians, ease into turns, and merge with the flow of traffic — just another participant in the choreography of the streets. Before long, what once felt uncanny starts to feel routine. And that’s when behavior starts to shift: when you stop treating a technology as a novelty and start reorganizing your life around it. Then you start to wonder what’s next. Some are comparing the trajectory and potential impact of physical AI, including autonomous vehicles, to another technology that had some of its earliest followers in the Bay Area. The internet first took hold among a relatively small group of academics, engineers, and hobbyists who were a little early and a little obsessed. They emailed instead of called. They built websites before there was much to browse. They imagined a future in a digital world that, to most people, barely existed. Then, gradually and all at once, everyone else joined them. Now something similar is playing out on the roads. Driverless cars are quietly logging millions of miles in some of the same cities where the early internet took shape.
