Autonomous ride-hailing company Waymo is expected to resume service in San Antonio this week after suspending operations following two flood-related incidents involving its self-driving vehicles. Operations were paused after an April 20 incident in which a Waymo vehicle was swept away by floodwaters and washed into Salado Creek. The incident came about two weeks after another Waymo vehicle became stranded in floodwaters near McCullough Avenue and Contour Drive. Both cars were unoccupied, and no one was injured in either incident. The service pause has been the company’s longest in San Antonio to date as Waymo reviewed its flood monitoring procedures and safety protocols. Waymo previously said it would reevaluate how its vehicles respond to flood-prone areas and severe weather alerts before restarting service. The back-to-back flood incidents also underscored how quickly changing weather conditions in San Antonio can challenge autonomous vehicle technology. Waymo’s rollout in San Antonio has also raised broader questions about how self-driving vehicles interact with emergency responders during severe weather and other emergencies. Waymo began operations in San Antonio in February in a limited service area covering 60 square miles of the city. Ford recently published a patent (number US-12617393-В2), originally found by Road & Track, for a "System for detecting moving objects," and it would allow a car to move itself, to either avoid a moving object or at least reduce the probability of impact. While it's just a patent for now, and car companies patent weird tech that never gets made all the time, this is a good idea and could help many Ford owners rest easier. Ford originally filed for this patent back in 2023, so it's been thinking about autonomous impact dodging for a while. And it won't take any radical new hardware to make, so it's entirely possible that Ford actually puts this tech into production. The system uses sensors that monitor potential impacts around the car, and if it finds any, the car can try to move out of the way. Given that Ford already uses a myriad of sensors in many of its cars to surveil their surroundings while using its Level 2 hands-free Blue Cruise system, it stands to reason that the company currently has the tech to make this happen. Much of her content is satirical, but she seems to suggest that there is someone remotely operating her car—Waymos are actually autonomous. "I know that my Waymo is being driven by someone real right now in Indonesia. Because I was just in three complicated situations. I take Waymos because I feel so much safer in them. But this is the first time that I’m in one that maybe my lawyer is gonna be coming out," she says. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is asking for concepts for drones with a high degree of autonomous operation, as well as remotely-operated containerized systems to launch, recover, and otherwise support them. What DARPA is really interested in is a pairing that can be employed as part of a largely self-sustaining “autonomous constellation” capable of supporting networked swarms consisting of as many as 500 drones at once. A “constellation” like the one described above, incorporating drones configured for a wide array of roles, including surveillance and reconnaissance and kinetic strike, could be readily deployed in contested areas, or even potentially positioned deep behind enemy lines. Ukraine’s Operation Spiderweb covert drone attacks on several Russian airbases last year, as well as Israel’s near-field attacks from within Iran during the opening phases of the 12 Day War, have already demonstrated the effectiveness of the kind of capability DARPA is seeking. TWZ has also highlighted the value that this kind of drone swarm launch capability would offer on land and at sea on several occasions in the past, including after the Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) put out a very similar call for proposals earlier this year. DARPA’s Tactical Technology Office (TTO) first put out its request for information for this containerized drone swarm capability back in April, but has updated the relevant contracting notice several times since then. The latest version was posted online yesterday. Amazon is adding a short-form video feed to the Prime Video app called “Clips,” the company announced on Friday. Rolling out first in the U.S., Clips will include… well, clips of shows on Prime Video that are designed to hook a viewer and get them to give the full show a try. From that clip, users can add a title to their watchlist, share it with a friend, or navigate to rent, buy, or access the title through their subscription. “Clips gives customers a whole new way to browse with short, personalized snippets tailored to their interests,” said Prime Video’s director of Global Application Experiences, Brian Griffin, in a press release. “Whether they have a few minutes to scroll or are looking for something to watch when they have more time, entertainment is just a tap away.” Amazon first tested this short-form feed during the NBA season, showing highlights that users can scroll through as though they’re watching TikToks. It’s not a surprise to see Prime Video make this change — Netflix, Peacock, Tubi, Disney, and others have recently rolled out similar experiences, which are designed to promote discovery. Netflix’s short-form feed even shares the Clips name. Clips is first rolling out to select U.S. customers on iOS, Android, and Fire tablets, but it will be available more broadly this summer. Waymo recovers flooded vehicle, plans to resume San Antonio operations next week
SAN ANTONIO - Waymo says it has recovered one of its self-driving vehicles after it was swept into a flooded roadway during recent heavy rain, prompting the company to temporarily pause operations in the city.
In a statement, a Waymo spokesperson confirmed the vehicle involved in the incident was unoccupied at the time.

The incident happened during a period of heavy rainfall, when the autonomous vehicle entered a flooded crossing and was pulled into an active waterway.
Waymo says it coordinated with local authorities to recover the vehicle and has since successfully retrieved it.
The company initially suspended service citywide following the incident out of an abundance of caution as crews assessed road safety conditions.
Waymo now says it plans to resume operations in San Antonio early next week.

Fully automated charging and operations center opens in Qingdao A fully automated charging and operations center for autonomous vehicles began operation in Qingdao, Shandong province, on Friday, marking a new step toward unmanned and intelligent charging for autonomous vehicles, operators said. Named Tide Island, the facility allows autonomous vehicles to complete the entire charging process without human intervention. When a vehicle detects a low battery level, it can automatically plan a route back to the hub, park in a designated space, and recharge on its own. Located in Chengyang district of Qingdao, the three-story smart charging hub has 100 parking spaces and integrates photovoltaic power generation with ultra-fast charging technology. The facility is equipped with one automated parking robot, 100 automated charging robots and an AI-powered operating system, with a total installed capacity of 5 megawatts, Mu Xiaopeng, vice-president and chief scientist of TELD, a Qingdao-based charging network provider and one of the project's operators, said. Each vehicle can charge at up to 250 kilowatts, reaching full capacity in about 20 minutes, effectively addressing both charging speed and parking challenges, Mu said.
