Earlier this year, dozens of autonomous vehicles from the Chinese company Baidu suddenly stopped in their tracks in Wuhan, China, triggering major chaos and sparking alarm among lawmakers in Beijing. Not much later, the country’s government decided to stop issuing new licenses for new autonomous vehicles altogether, as Bloomberg reported last week, once again highlighting persistent pain points in the rollout of the tech — not to mention how far Beijing is willing to go to intervene when things go south. As Fortune points out, a strikingly similar situation is playing out in the United States — yet federal regulations are nowhere in sight. Robotaxis from both Waymo and Tesla are still relying on human operators, stealing luggage, or colliding with objects and animals in the streets. Federal regulators are even investigating a Waymo vehicle crashing into a child outside of an elementary school. A massive power outage in San Francisco caused Waymo’s fleet to clog up the city’s streets late last year, forcing the company to shut down the service entirely in a debacle eerily reminiscent of the March incident in Wuhan. In short, it’s an endless list of collisions and near misses that should have any federal government consider pausing new licenses for autonomous vehicles, like in China. But for now, there’s been no sign of the type of sweeping action that China is clearly willing to take. Instead, autonomous vehicle regulations largely rely on a patchwork of rules that vary state by state. The country has no federal autonomous vehicle safety law, Fortune reports, while a bipartisan House bill remains no more than a draft and previous attempts have stalled. Waymo recovers flooded vehicle, plans to resume San Antonio operations next week
SAN ANTONIO - Waymo says it has recovered one of its self-driving vehicles after it was swept into a flooded roadway during recent heavy rain, prompting the company to temporarily pause operations in the city.
In a statement, a Waymo spokesperson confirmed the vehicle involved in the incident was unoccupied at the time.

The incident happened during a period of heavy rainfall, when the autonomous vehicle entered a flooded crossing and was pulled into an active waterway.
Waymo says it coordinated with local authorities to recover the vehicle and has since successfully retrieved it.
The company initially suspended service citywide following the incident out of an abundance of caution as crews assessed road safety conditions.
Waymo now says it plans to resume operations in San Antonio early next week.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it is opening an investigation in a series of crashes of start-up Avride autonomous vehicles that raised questions about the competency of the vehicles.
NHTSA said the vehicles’ performance may indicate inappropriate assertiveness and insufficient competence “and may also constitute traffic safety violations,” and added some crashes resulted in property damage and one reported minor injury.
NHTSA noted that Avride is operating some of its AVs on the Uber UBER.N platform and has offered passenger service to the public since December in Dallas, where many of the crashes occurred.

Pirelli and Univrses have announced that they have signed an agreement for the integration of the Swedish deep tech specialist’s AI‑based computer vision 3DAI technologies into the tier maker’s Cyber Tyre system. Pirelli has also acquired a 30% stake in Univrses. It’s 3DAI solution is an AI system that digitizes city and roadside infrastructure using data from vehicle-mounted sensors such as cameras; and its 3DAI Engine provides autonomous vehicles with perception capabilities including 3D positioning, 3D mapping and spatial deep learning. Abstract The advancement of connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) enables cooperative decision-making for traffic efficiency and safety. This study proposes a centralized lane-change decision coordination framework for multiple CAVs on highways, extending cooperative driving beyond traditional car-following strategies. The controller jointly optimizes speed adaptation and lane-change decisions over a finite prediction horizon to maximize overall traffic utility while ensuring collision-free maneuvers. Assuming reliable vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication, the planner computes acceleration, braking, and lane-change commands for all vehicles simultaneously. The underlying decision process is formulated as a mixed-integer optimization problem, which is computationally prohibitive for real-time deployment. To address this challenge, a priority-aware search strategy is developed to evaluate only the most promising lane-change combinations at each time step, integrated within a Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework enhanced with Artificial Potential Fields (APFs) for safety assurance and motion guidance. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework effectively balances safety, mobility, and system-level coordination while achieving real-time feasibility through significantly reduced computational complexity. The approach offers a scalable solution for future intelligent transportation infrastructures and real-time traffic management applications. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into Avride, a robotaxi company that has partnered with Uber, after identifying more than a dozen crashes and one minor injury. The safety regulator’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) said all 16 crashes that it has identified have to do with “the competence of” Avride’s self-driving system, which has apparently struggled with changing lanes, responding to other vehicles in the same lane, and responding to stationary objects. All of the crashes have come while the Avride vehicles were under the supervision of a safety monitor in the driver’s seat. Reached for comment, Avride declined to explain why the safety monitors did not intervene in these crashes. The company pointed out that it reported these crashes to the NHTSA as required by the agency’s 2021 Standing General Order on automated driving. “We have implemented targeted technical and operational mitigations to address our findings from each reported incident between December 2025 and March 2026, and have further enhanced overall system capabilities,” the company said in a statement. “Our total operations have continued to grow, while the frequency of incidents relative to our mileage has steadily declined.” Uber did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Avride, best known for its sidewalk delivery robots, is a subsidiary of Nebius, formerly Yandex NV, the Netherlands-based company that sold off its Russian business in 2024. The company has also spent years developing and testing self-driving cars, and struck a partnership with Uber in 2024. The following year, Uber and its parent company Nebius agreed to make “strategic investments and other commitments” to Avride worth up to $375 million. After years of working in stealth, autonomous driving firm Stack AV unveiled a new autonomous truck at an expo in Las Vegas, the first from a collaboration with partners PACCAR and Peterbilt Motors Co.
Stack AV was founded in 2023 by CEO Bryan Salesky and President Peter Rander. The duo had previously founded autonomous vehicle company Argo AI in 2016, which later secured backing from Ford and Volkswagen, raised over $3.6 billion and employed over 2,000 people. In 2022, the two automakers made the decision to pull the plug, leading to Argo shuttering, with parts of the company being absorbed by Ford Motor Co.
Salesky, Rander and CTO Brett Browning moved quickly to launch Stack, raising an undisclosed investment from SoftBank that was reported to be over $1 billion. Since its inception, Stack has been in stealth mode, working with heads down on the technology.

A team of researchers from MBARI, the University of Montana, and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa recently shared how autonomous robots can provide scientists with new means for unveiling microbial activity in remote areas. Their new study in Nature Communications reveals how microbial communities and ocean biogeochemistry vary over daily cycles in response to physical and chemical ocean processes. MBARI’s long-range autonomous underwater vehicle (LRAUV) is a powerful and versatile tool for ocean science. Equipped with advanced instruments and intelligent algorithms, an LRAUV can detect and follow temperature and salinity fronts, as well as phytoplankton blooms. When outfitted with MBARI’s Environmental Sample Processor, the vehicle can collect samples for advanced genomics analyses, revealing the metabolic activity of microbes over time as they drift through the sea. During a 2018 expedition led by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, researchers deployed two LRAUVs to autonomously track and sample deep phytoplankton blooms in the productive, twilight waters of cyclonic eddies offshore of the northern Hawaiian islands. MBARI technology gave researchers an unprecedented view of gene expression and biogeochemistry over hourly to weekly time scales. Autonomous robots can operate continuously across vast and remote regions, helping scientists uncover previously hidden patterns and processes to better understand the role of marine life in Earth’s climate system. But as the most recent quarterly earnings from both mobility platforms reveal, the competitive frame has shifted. The market today is a mature one where profitability matters, and the next frontier is no longer simply moving people from point A to point B. It is about building the operating system for urban mobility, commerce and eventually autonomous transportation. Both companies are growing. Both are profitable, although Uber posted quarterly results on Wednesday (May 6) that were better received by investors than Lyft’s Thursday (May 7) financials. Both firms, however, are leaning heavily into artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous vehicles. But their visions of what comes next and how they plan to win could hardly be more different. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi described the company’s strategy as expanding “everyday utility” across travel, delivery, commerce and mobility. Uber reported 21% year-over-year gross bookings growth, accelerated mobility growth and a delivery business increasingly powered by grocery and retail. The act of driving is an extremely complex activity. So when companies set out to create a system that can do it in place of a real person, there were always going to be some teething pains. We’ve seen that time and time again in the form of crashes and traffic violations, even from the big names in the autonomous driving industry, including several from Waymo and Tesla. Avride is another company that has been developing its own autonomous driving system for use in passenger vehicles and ride-sharing programs. Currently operating out of Austin, Texas, it’s been developing its product since 2017, first as a part of Yandex (the Russian equivalent of Google) before being spun off as its own company in 2020. While not nearly as widespread as Tesla or Waymo, Avride struck a deal with Uber to start offering autonomous rides using the company’s modified Hyundai Ioniq 5s (the deal also involves a tie-up between Uber Eats and Avride’s four-wheeled delivery robot). Avride has been offering its autonomous driving services to the public via Uber since December 2025, and it doesn’t sound like it’s gone without issues. Patty Guerra, UC Merced Road changes such as lane shifts, new signs and speed-limit modifications can be confusing to drivers, both human and mechanical. A human driver can quickly perceive and understand new or temporary changes to road conditions. A new project at UC Merced aims to deliver that same swift processing power to autonomous cars. “There’s a gap between what can run in the vehicle at the power that the vehicle has available and the speed the vehicle needs,” said computer science and engineering professor Ross Greer. “There’s a gap between model performance in the lab and in the real world using real vehicles.” Thanks to a grant from Santa Clara-based tech company NVDIA, researchers are looking into ways to narrow that gap. The artificial intelligence pioneer has selected the project “Edge-Deployed Multimodal Safety Reasoning for Autonomous Vehicles” for inclusion in its Academic Grant Program. According to the proposal, construction zones and dynamic speed limits are rarely reflected on digital maps and are often communicated through signs, leading to missed or delayed responses and elevated crash risk. While recent AI advances support autonomous driving in complex scenarios, many systems remain limited to perception or recognition tasks and do not directly translate these insights into real-time control or safety responses. Opinion: We Must Price and Manage The Curb Before Robo-Taxis and Other AVs Scale Up The gap between what's on the street and what cities can actually see, price, or enforce is the defining curb management problem of the next decade. And no one is treating it with any urgency. Jordan: I live in Los Angeles, so I see autonomous vehicles every day. I ride in them. I also watch them stop in active travel lanes, idle in red zones, and sit at the curb in metered spaces for which they don’t pay, at which they can’t be ticketed, and that don’t appear in any city system as occupied. The car is physically present, but administratively it is largely invisible, unlike most other vehicles today where cities have at a minimum mechanisms for them to pay for curb use and receive citations for non-compliance. Gabe: I live in D.C. and AV legislation for commercial service is just being introduced. We currently have robo-taxis testing on the streets, and myriad delivery and ride-hail services are visible throughout the city. A peer-reviewed study published this year in Travel Behaviour and Society found that automated vehicles in US cities are associated with a roughly 6-percent increase in vehicle miles traveled — driven in part by AVs traveling empty between trips, searching for parking, or returning home after dropping off passengers. Lifestyle Tesla Semi hauls fresh Cybercab batch as Robotaxi era takes hold A Tesla Semi was filmed hauling Cybercab units out of Giga Texas for the first time. A Tesla Semi loaded with Cybercab units was recently filmed leaving Gigafactory Texas, marking what appears to be the first documented delivery run of Tesla’s autonomous two-seater. The footage shows multiple Cybercabs secured on a flatbed trailer being hauled by a production Tesla Semi, a truck rated for a gross combination weight of 82,000 lbs. The location is consistent with Giga Texas in Austin, where Cybercab production has been ramping since February 2026. The sighting follows a wave of Cybercab activity at the Austin facility. In late April, drone operator Joe Tegtmeyer spotted approximately 60 Cybercabs parked in two organized groups in the factory’s outbound lot, the largest concentration observed to date. New silicon-photonics lidar chip widens autonomous vehicle vision without moving parts The new silicon-photonics architecture improves lidar scanning performance without adding bulky mechanical components. MIT researchers have developed a new silicon-photonics chip design that could make lidar systems smaller, tougher, and more accurate. The advance targets a long-standing weakness in chip-based lidar systems: narrow field-of-view limitations caused by signal interference between optical antennas. Lidar systems help autonomous vehicles detect obstacles and map surroundings using pulses of infrared light. But current systems remain expensive and mechanically complex. Many rely on moving parts that wear down over time, making them harder to scale for wider commercial use across transportation and industrial sectors. Wider scanning angles Researchers at MIT designed an integrated antenna array that reduces unwanted crosstalk between antennas on a silicon-photonics chip. That improvement allows the lidar system to scan a wider field of view while maintaining low-noise performance. Silicon-photonics technology uses light instead of electrical signals to process information. Engineers see it as a promising path toward compact lidar systems because it can shrink optical hardware onto semiconductor chips. However, previous silicon-photonics lidar designs struggled to scan peripheral angles effectively. Existing methods to widen the viewing area often introduced extra noise and reduced measurement precision. The MIT team tackled that issue by redesigning how the antennas interact on the chip. Their approach suppresses interference that normally disrupts signal quality during wide-angle scanning. The researchers believe the advance could support next-generation lidar systems for autonomous driving, aerial mapping, and industrial monitoring.
