ADVERTISEMENT Uber is exploring plans to turn its driver network into a large-scale data collection platform for autonomous vehicle (AV) companies, according to comments made by the company’s chief technology officer at a technology event in San Francisco. Speaking at TechCrunch’s StrictlyVC event, Uber CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga said the company eventually wants to equip human-driven vehicles with sensor kits capable of collecting real-world driving data for AV developers and other artificial intelligence systems focused on physical-world environments. Naga said the initiative would build on Uber’s recently launched AV Labs program, which currently operates through a small fleet of sensor-equipped vehicles managed directly by the company rather than through its driver network. “That is the direction we want to go eventually,” Naga said, referring to outfitting drivers’ cars with sensors. He added that regulatory clarity around the use of sensors and data-sharing requirements across different states would be necessary before broader deployment. He said AV companies need extensive datasets covering different traffic patterns, locations, and road scenarios to train their systems effectively. Uber currently partners with 25 autonomous vehicle companies, including Wayve , and is building what Naga described as an “AV cloud” — a repository of labelled sensor data that partner companies can access for training and simulation purposes. The company said AV partners can also use Uber’s systems to run their trained models in “shadow mode,” allowing simulations of how autonomous vehicles would perform during real Uber trips without deploying fully driverless cars on roads. Uber exited its own self-driving car development efforts several years ago, but has since expanded partnerships and investments across the autonomous vehicle ecosystem.

The startup that dares to ask, “Why does the Macbook driving my freight around need a whole cab?” just showed off a fully driverless, cab-less, and truck-less battery-electric freight platform designed to handle containerized cargo more efficiently than ever. Instead of looking at the tractor and asking how to make it work without a driver, Humble looked at the trailer, itself, redesigning the container chassis as a vehicle from the ground up. The end result isn’t just an autonomous solution, it’s an overall lighter platform without a cab that saves shippers the weight of a sleeper cab, a day cab, or the truck at all. Innoviz Technologies and Switzerland-based autonomous delivery firm LOXO have signed a letter of intent (LOI) for the integration of Innoviz’s InnovizTwo Long-Range LiDAR into LOXO’s Level 4 Digital Driver autonomous driving stack. The two are in advanced testing, with LOXO intending to nominate Innoviz as the LiDAR supplier subject to successful completion. LOXO’s Digital Driver technology powers autonomous delivery using purpose-built and retrofitted electric vehicles for urban and regional logistics across Europe, with applications spanning transport, retail and postal delivery. The Swiss company is preparing to develop its next-generation driverless vehicles, with the LOI covering this upcoming platform. In a statement, Amin Amini, Co-Founder and Chief Executive of LOXO, said: “Our next-generation autonomous delivery platform demands sensing that always performs irrespective of distance, speed, and the unpredictable conditions of the real-world. According to Gasgoo, automakers like FAW, GAC, Chery, and XPENG showcased robots and core technologies prominently at this year's Beijing Auto Show. At the same time, a wave of core technology providers for intelligent vehicles signaled a deepening focus on embodied AI—either by releasing key solutions or announcing major strategic upgrades. California Will Soon Begin Ticketing Driverless Cars for Traffic Violations Assembly Bill 1777 allows police to issue citations to robotaxis and hold driverless car companies accountable. Ever since driverless cars became more common, one question has hovered over the road: who gets the ticket when no one is behind the wheel of a vehicle cited for a traffic violation? Beginning on July 1, 2026, California will begin implementing its answer. Under Assembly Bill 1777, police and traffic officers will have a clear framework for citing Waymo, Tesla, Uber, and other autonomous vehicle operators when their vehicles break the law. As Road & Track reports, the measure lays out how robotaxis and other driverless vehicles can be penalized for speeding, illegal turns, rolling through stop signs, and the same range of infractions human drivers face. Once the law takes effect, officers will be able to issue notices of autonomous vehicle noncompliance that identify the operator and list the alleged violations. Those notices will include the same basic details as a standard traffic citation: date, time, location, the laws allegedly broken, and the vehicle’s license plate number. The one obvious omission is a driver’s license number, because there is no driver. So how do officers ticket a car with no one in it? That responsibility will fall to the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The DMV will process notices of noncompliance submitted by law enforcement, review the incident, and decide whether corrective action is necessary. In collisions, police will issue a citation to the autonomous operator’s human representative once that person arrives at the scene. According to the Los Angeles Times, penalties can include restrictions or suspensions of an operator’s permit for repeat violations or problems that cannot be fixed. Road changes such as lane shifts, new signs and speed-limit modifications can be confusing to drivers, both human and mechanical. A human driver can quickly perceive and understand new or temporary changes to road conditions. A new project at UC Merced aims to deliver that same swift processing power to autonomous cars. "There's a gap between what can run in the vehicle at the power that the vehicle has available and the speed the vehicle needs," said computer science and engineering Professor Ross Greer. "There's a gap between model performance in the lab and in the real world using real vehicles." Thanks to a grant from Santa Clara-based tech company NVDIA, researchers are looking into ways to narrow that gap. The artificial intelligence pioneer has selected the project "Edge-Deployed Multimodal Safety Reasoning for Autonomous Vehicles" for inclusion in its Academic Grant Program. According to the proposal, construction zones and dynamic speed limits are rarely reflected on digital maps and are often communicated through signs, leading to missed or delayed responses and elevated crash risk. While recent AI advances support autonomous driving in complex scenarios, many systems remain limited to perception or recognition tasks and do not directly translate these insights into real-time control or safety responses. Greer's project aimsto leverage NVIDIA's technology to adapt driverless cars to better process what is happening on the roads, with explicit attention to uncertainty introduced by temporary map changes. "NVIDIA has offered access to state-of-the-art hardware that will help our team translate research into vision-language foundation models from the lab to the road," Greer said of NVDIA. The new effort builds on an earlier research project he had to bring new AI material into real-world vehicles. Rivian Automotive's (RIVN 0.82%) strategy for success was never solely about retail electric vehicle (EV) sales. Early in its development, the company announced a deal with e-commerce giant Amazon to deliver 100,000 commercial electric delivery vans by the end of the decade. More than 30,000 are now in service, and Rivian is now growing its fleet business through a new agreement with Uber Technologies (UBER +8.53%). But there's a twist with the Uber business, and it could have big ramifications for Rivian and its stock. Focus on technology Rivian and Uber announced a new partnership last month that is expected to bring more than $1 billion of new capital to Rivian and a fleet of electric vehicles to Uber. Rather than commercial vans like Amazon, this fleet business will use Rivian's new R2 SUV, which just began customer production. Uber ordered 10,000 new R2 SUVs for delivery in 2028 and plans to purchase 40,000 more in 2030. These will be fully autonomous R2 EVs, though, and that's what makes this deal a game changer for both Rivian and Uber. The deal with Uber highlights Rivian's push into self-driving technology. Late last year, Rivian held its first "Autonomy and AI Day," during which it revealed an in-house autonomy processor. Uber's investment could bring up to $1.25 billion in capital to Rivian over the next five years, but it's the underlying technology that investors will be paying most attention to. Uber will help highlight that as it did today. In its earnings release today, Uber CFO Balaji Krishnamurthy stated, From this position of strength, we're investing with conviction in the significant opportunities ahead, while taking a capital-efficient approach to AVs [autonomous vehicles] and embracing AI to drive growth and productivity. Troopers from Utah and Wyoming recently partnered for a commercial vehicle inspection and enforcement detail on I-80 targeting trucks that avoid Ports of Entry.
The inspection detail took place on April 29, 2026, on I-80 at the Utah/Wyoming border.
According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP), the four-hour operation targeted commercial vehicle safety violations as well as “trucks that were skipping the Evanston and Echo Ports of Entry.”
A total of 34 trucks were inspected during the operation, leading to the discovery of 153 violations.
Additionally 15 trucks were placed out-of-service, and 10 drivers were placed out-of-service.
WHP said that one inspector “found a cracked frame on a trailer loaded with construction supplies.”
“We have great appreciation for the assistance given by our allied agencies in keeping Interstate 80 safe for all travelers,” Wyoming troopers said.

While autonomous cars and semi-trucks are preparing to go mainstream, Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli is not holding itself back from advancing in this tech era, as it plans to pair the sensors in its tires with a system that would help improve road safety. Pirelli has acquired a 30% stake in Swedish tech firm Univrses and signed a new agreement with the same company to develop an enhanced road monitoring system. Univrses’ 3DAI technologies will be integrated into Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre system solutions to develop a system that could aid ADAS and autonomous driving technologies by delivering timely and accurate data. Through the integration of technologies, a car will learn more about its environment and map the region it operates in, which will help report potential motoring hazards to concerned authorities. Pirelli to Pair Its Tire Sensors With 3DAI Software to Offer Perception Capabilities Pirelli's Cyber Tyre technology boasts several features that are a first in the world. Describing the capabilities, a press release stated: "In particular, Pirelli Cyber Tyre, which is the world’s first integrated hardware and software system capable of collecting data from sensors inside the tyres, process the information collected using Pirelli’s proprietary software and algorithms, and communicate in real time with the vehicle’s electronics and with the cloud, enhancing cars’ safety systems and permitting to monitor road infrastructures’ status." California to Start Ticketing Driverless Cars The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) confirmed that it will be imposing new regulations for driverless vehicles. Pending regulations, based off the updated rules established in 2024, were approved late last month and allow the state to fine autonomous vehicle manufacturers directly for traffic violations. There are also updated rules determining the amount of testing required before any company can field new self-driving vehicles on public roads. Certification will now be done in phases, with light-duty vehicles needing 50,000 miles in each phase and semi trucks requiring 10 times that amount. California now also has more agency over how emergency operations are handled. The DMV wants enhanced licensing for remote operators, new ways to override AVs that are in the way of emergency response vehicles, and improved incident reporting from manufacturers. Officials also want ways of imposing restrictions on fleet size and where the vehicles are allowed to operate based upon the needs of a given area. Changes were clearly done in response to public outrage. Numerous high-profile incidents fanned the flames of change. AVs have struck city buses, pedestrians, and pets in California. Local residents and even some emergency services have likewise been expressing frustrations about how autonomous test vehicles have been getting in the way — creating traffic jams and clogging up parking zones. But it’s not just The Golden State that’s seeing complaints.
