At a time when the automobile industry’s most exclusive manufacturers are gathering on California’s Monterey Peninsula, Karma Automotive is using the 75th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance to make an unusually ambitious statement: the future of ultra-luxury performance cars may not be entirely electric. Karma is arriving at Monterey Car Week with three very different visions of that future. Leading the charge is the 2027 Karma Gyesera Grand Coupe, a four-seat hybrid extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) scheduled to reach dealerships in December with a starting price of $139,995. The lineup represents Karma’s attempt to establish itself as an American ultra-luxury automaker at a moment when the traditional boundaries between electric, hybrid and gasoline-powered automobiles are rapidly disappearing. And Monterey Car Week—with its concentration of collectors, supercar buyers and automotive enthusiasts—is arguably the perfect place to make that case. The Gyesera Takes the Lead Of the three, the Gyesera is the car that matters most immediately. It is the first of Karma’s next-generation vehicles scheduled to go into production, with customer deliveries beginning in December 2026. The formula is distinctly grand touring: four seats, a long and dramatic coupe profile, extensive use of carbon-fiber-reinforced composites and an aluminum space frame. Underneath that exotic exterior is Karma’s latest Hybrid EREV powertrain, producing 566 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. It wasn’t enough that there are billboards littered all around the roads we drive on for companies to try to capture our attention. I’ve always wanted them plastered on the increasingly large screen in my center console. I am, of course, being sarcastic. But we recently saw one of the inevitable developments from the “connected car” that automakers (and tech companies) have been pushing us toward for more than a decade. Starting on July 27, when BMW owners turned on their vehicles they were met with a special surprise: an exclusive ad for the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie. I found it kind of funny when I started seeing these stories. I saw the movie with a friend of mine, and there’s a scene where a BMW billboard is prominently featured for several seconds. When it appeared onscreen, I leaned over to my friend to comment on how the company had clearly paid to stick its ad in the movie. What I didn’t realize was that the movie also got its own ad beamed onto the center screen of every modern BMW vehicle. Underprice and loss ratios may deteriorate as claims experience emerges. Overprice and insurance providers risk ceding a fast-growing segment to competitors willing to take a different view of the risk. Until somewhat recently, I didn't realize wireless Android Auto requires both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to function. Look, I know it's probably a silly assumption for me to make. Of course, I've hooked my phone up to my car's peer-to-peer 5GHz Wi-Fi connection, but I thought this was only required for the initial setup and that after that, the wireless connection was handled over Bluetooth (no, I didn't really think about why it wasn't required for the initial setup). Then one day, I got in my car and wireless Android Auto just wouldn't connect. I spent a solid 15 minutes troubleshooting, and as far as I could tell, there was no clear reason why my Pixel 10 Pro wouldn't connect to my car. To my surprise, the issue was very simple: I had Wi-Fi turned off on my phone. This is when I realized wireless Android Auto requires both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to function. Now that I own a vehicle that natively supports wireless Android Auto, I decided it was finally time to do a bit of research and get to the bottom of what actually connects my Android device to my vehicle. Front-wheel-drive (FWD) variants use a single electric motor producing 201 horsepower. All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard on the GT-Line and GT trims and optional on the Wind and Land models, delivering a combined 261 horsepower.
