When Choi, a 35-year-old office worker living in Korea, started looking for her next car, she did not expect BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brand, to make her shortlist. “I've wanted an electric vehicle, but domestic models are just too expensive,” Choi said, adding that rising fuel prices first sparked her interest in EVs. With its 70-year-old Glass House headquarters becoming outmoded and fading into history, Ford Motor Co. asked itself, “Where do we grow from here?” The automaker is answering that question in part by converting the former Product Development Center in its hometown of Dearborn, Michigan, into its new World Headquarters South. Construction started in April. Scheduled for completion in 2029, the expanded and renovated World Headquarters complex will accommodate 10,000 to 11,000 employees in total. The main new World Headquarters building opened in November 2025. At 3.3 million square feet, the combined new complex will cover twice the area of Glass House, formally known as the Henry Ford II World Center, Ford says. In addition to providing modern workspace for 5,000 employees, the World Headquarters South building will house space for labs, testing and prototyping, and will also will become the new home of Ford Racing. Relocating the racing operation closer to the broader business promotes the transfer of learnings from the track into road car development, Ford says. Chinese-built electric vehicles are set to hit Canadian shores, with Geely-owned Lotus becoming the first Chinese automaker to begin deliveries under a new trade agreement struck between the countries this past January. China’s ambassador to Canada, Wang Di, told Reuters that Lotus vehicles will begin arriving in Canada next month, with a delivery ceremony planned in Montreal. The deliveries mark the first imports under the agreement between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping that permits up to 49,000 Chinese-made EVs to enter Canada each year under preferential tariff treatment. The agreement is also part of Canada’s response to the unpredictable nature of its trade status with the United States by courting trade relationships that help to diversify its partners beyond the US. According to Reuters, other Chinese automakers are expected to follow. Starting July 1, OEMs are required, by the bill, to provide a driver with the ability to terminate a person’s access to a connected vehicle service. The provider should terminate a person’s access to the vehicle within two business days after a request from a driver is made, the bill says. A driver can prove they have the authority to terminate a person’s access to the vehicle via multiple options such as legal title, dissolution decree, or a court order proving exclusive use or possession of the vehicle. Starting Jan. 1, 2028, vehicles must clearly indicate to those inside of it, who has accessed the connected vehicle service and/or location from outside of the vehicle. Premium electric vehicle maker Polestar is abandoning the U.S. auto market after the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security did not grant it authorization to sell vehicles from model year 2027 onwards, because of connected vehicle technology linked to China. The move comes just less than a month after its sister brand Volvo Cars, also owned by China-based automaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, granted permission to continue trading in the U.S. The Bureau withdrew authorization under its Connected Vehicle Rule, which restricts the import and sale of cars equipped with connected-vehicle technology linked to China or Russia. Polestar will continue to sell existing stock of Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 EVs in the U.S. and will continue to support its customers, including providing access to its service network, the company said in a June 25 release. The company said it will now concentrate on the European market, which accounts for 80% of its retail sales, by continuing to expand its sales network and prepare to localize the manufacturing of future Polestar models. Despite Volvo Cars’ commitment in April to the exclusive global manufacturing of the Polestar 3 sedan at its factory in Charleston, South Carolina, the U.S. market accounted for just 6% of the brand’s global sales volume. Polestar is now expanding its retail footprint across Europe by entering the Baltic markets of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the company announced in a June 1 release.
