Waymo to launch new Ojai robotaxi model for passenger service The collaboration between Geely brand Zeekr and Waymo on a joint robotaxi project has been known for several years, with early prototypes already operating on public roads since 2024. The vehicle was originally developed under the name Zeekr RT and is based on the Zeekr Mix van. In January 2026, the partners renamed the model Waymo Ojai, after the Californian city of Ojai. The Ojai is now set to enter regular service with Waymo soon. “While our employees have been enjoying fully autonomous trips in the Ojai for months, we’re excited to welcome our first public riders along for the ride to enjoy this next-generation experience,” the company stated. Initially, selected passengers in San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles will be able to use the Ojai free of charge while Waymo collects feedback on the experience. Over the coming months, the company plans to expand access gradually and deploy the vehicle in additional cities, including Denver, Las Vegas and San Diego, before opening the service to all customers later this year. Waymo currently operates a fleet of around 3,000 vehicles, all based on the Jaguar I-Pace electric car. The company will continue to run these vehicles alongside the Waymo Ojai for the foreseeable future. However, the Ojai offers several advantages. As a van, it provides more interior space for passengers. Waymo has also significantly lowered hardware costs per vehicle by reducing the number of cameras from 29 to 13 and cutting the number of lidar sensors from five to four. It is a story that has become familiar, with variations, to a significant number of Kia and Hyundai EV owners across the country are faced with charging problems (Auto Connected Car News reported on the issue first in the IONIQ 5 ) The culprit is a single electronic module, the Integrated Charging Control Unit — the ICCU — a component that manages the flow of energy between the high-voltage drive battery, the 12-volt auxiliary system, and the outside world when the car is plugged in. When it works, owners never think about it. When it doesn’t, their cars become, in the vernacular of owner forums, very expensive bricks. A Platform Problem The EV6, Kia’s award-winning electric crossover, and the EV9, its three-row electric flagship, both ride on the E-GMP architecture — the dedicated electric platform that Hyundai Motor Group developed to compete with Tesla and Volkswagen in the global EV market. It is, by most engineering assessments, a technically ambitious piece of work: 800-volt charging capability, wide-body proportions, and genuine range and performance credentials. But the E-GMP platform also brought the ICCU, and the ICCU, it has emerged, has a vulnerability. The unit can become damaged over time from transient high voltage and thermal cycling. A damaged ICCU may not be able to charge the 12-volt battery, which can discharge gradually while the car is being driven, causing progressive reductions in power. If the driver ignores warnings associated with the condition and continues driving in reduced-power mode, the vehicle can eventually experience a complete loss of drive power. A complete loss of drive power, as federal regulators note tersely in recall documents, increases the risk of a crash. Volvo Cars, majority owned by China’s Geely Holding, said it received approval from the U.S. government allowing it to continue selling vehicles. In January 2025, President Joe Biden’s administration finalized rules effectively barring nearly all Chinese cars and trucks from the U.S. market, as part of a crackdown on vehicle software and hardware from China. The rules included a ban on most Chinese-developed and maintained software that took effect in March 2026 for the 2027 model year and covered companies with significant Chinese ownership. Lawmakers have proposed making the rules even tougher. “Given our ownership Volvo Car USA was required to follow a process with the U.S. Department of Commerce to obtain a specific authorization for the continued import and sale of connected cars in the U.S.,” the company said. “With this specific authorization, Volvo Cars can continue its growth plans in the United States.” Volvo Cars sold 121,600 vehicles in the United States in 2025, down 2.9% from 2024. The Commerce Department did not respond to a request for comment. In September, Volvo Cars said it would begin producing a new hybrid model in the U.S. by the end of the decade. The new model will be designed for the U.S. market and help Volvo boost capacity utilization at its South Carolina plant. In April 2025, Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson said the company would produce more vehicles in the U.S., and the group announced in July that it plans to start producing its popular XC60 mid-size SUV in South Carolina in late 2026. Volvo, long positioned as an EV trailblazer with the aim of phasing out all non-electric models by 2030, last year reversed course and said hybrids would remain part of its lineup.
