(CNN) – The House Oversight Committee is launching an investigation into at least 10 deaths and disappearances.
The cases involve people connected to nuclear and aerospace research at organizations such as the Air Force, NASA and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The incidents have happened over the past three years.
The House committee wants the FBI, the Defense Department, the Department of Energy and NASA to provide briefings.
Families of two of the people have said medical conditions or personal struggles explain what happened to them.
There are no known links between the cases.

LAUREL, Md. — Laurel police are asking neighbors for any video their doorbell or security systems might have after more than 20 airbag thefts from vehicles. The thefts occurred in several different neighborhood throughout the city overnight. They’re hoping to find video from the evening, overnight, or early morning hours showing suspicious people or vehicles. Any footage you might have will be used solely for investigative purposes. “Your cooperation can make a meaningful difference in identifying those responsible and preventing future incidents. Thank you for helping keep our community safe,” police said in a press release. So far, Laurel police have not identified any suspects connected with the incidents. They also refrained from linking the thefts to similar crimes throughout Prince George's County and beyond. After a rash of airbag thefts in D.C., police suggested that, in addition to locking their doors when they park, people use steering-wheel locks since they also protect against airbag theft. Government fights ruling on EV charging VAT cut that could make electric cars cheaper for all HMRC says it plans to appeal a tribunal decision that could see the rate of VAT on some public chargers cut from 20 to five per cent The UK Government is set to appeal a court decision that could see the price of public electric car charging drop significantly. In February, community chargepoint operator Charge My Street and professional services network Deloitte brought forward and subsequently won a first-tier tribunal claiming that electric car drivers have been paying too much tax when utilising public infrastructure. Public EV charging incurs a VAT rate of 20 per cent, which is higher than the five per cent charged on domestic outlets. However, in a statement posted on LinkedIn, Deloitte's legal representative, Oliver Jarratt, wrote: “We noticed that existing VAT law already says that the provision of less than 1,000 kWh per month of electricity to a person at any particular premises counts as “domestic” – always – so we believed the five per cent rate already should apply to public EV charging, provided it was under that limit.” The Government has a different view on the matter, though, with HMRC telling Auto Express that it is “appealing this case, as our position is that standard rate VAT applies to electricity supplied through public EV charging infrastructure”. Of course, even if HMRC’s appeal was rejected, not all chargers would benefit from a lower rate, anyway. A couple decades ago, stealing a car was often a matter of finding a way in, twisting some wires together, and hoping nobody noticed. According to federal prosecutors, a recently busted auto theft crew needed as little as a single minute to gain access, start the car, and drive away. A 15-count federal indictment unsealed Wednesday alleges that six people participated in a sophisticated auto-theft operation that spanned Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Those cars would end up on shipping containers bound for Africa. Authorities believe the ring is connected to more than 130 stolen cars. The scheme sounds less like old-school car theft and more like a cybersecurity briefing. Prosecutors say the group used electronic OBDII tools to reprogram vehicles so that they would accept brand-new key fobs. “This is the new world of car theft,” U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said during Wednesday’s announcement. According to officials, some of the cars could be stolen in less than 60 seconds. The vehicles allegedly targeted by the ring were mostly late-model Hondas and Acuras, including the Honda CR-V and Civic and the Acura TLX and RDX. According to WJLA, authorities also said the thieves went after higher-profile performance cars, including Chevrolet Corvettes and Camaros. According to the indictment, stolen vehicles were taken to temporary “cool-off” locations, including a parking garage in Southeast Washington and another site near a Maryland Marriott hotel. Once there, members of the ring allegedly swapped license plates, obscured vehicle identification numbers, and disabled GPS and Bluetooth systems before moving the cars again. From there, investigators say the cars were trucked south or east to ports in Savannah, Georgia, and Baltimore, Maryland. The vehicles were then hidden inside shipping containers reportedly labeled as furniture before being sent to Ghana, where authorities say they were sold for substantial profits.

While testing the new RAV4 on the launch event being held near Malaga, I found myself on a tight and twisty road snaking its way up into the hills near the town of Coin. Tipping the RAV enthusiastically into a fast, well-sighted corner, I was thoroughly enjoying myself until the car’s electronics decided that my rapid steering movements were not fun, but foreboding, and must mean that I was swerving to avoid something in the road. Bing went the dashboard, as a message flashed up on the digital driver’s screen which told me that the RAV4’s forward-facing camera, which is mounted in the windscreen and spends most of its time looking for reasons to trigger the automated emergency braking, had now switched to dash cam mode and would save the previous 20 seconds of footage in case it was needed for evidence in the event of a crash. I was, I confess, a little surprised by this. I mean, I was driving enthusiastically but hardly dangerously, and my cornering techniques have never raised any cause for alarm in the past. That’s according to a report late Monday (April 20) from the Financial Times (FT), which cites sources familiar with the deal who say the funding would value the company at $38 billion. The company, which has the code name “Project Prometheus,” is focused on artificial intelligence (AI) models that simulate the behavior of things in the physical world, a field otherwise known as “physical AI.” The FT says this agreement would make the company one of the best-financed early stage startups in the world. Sources said the new agreement includes an initial $6.2 billion raised in November but has been extended due to demand. According to the report, the new funding is separate from a holding company for which Prometheus is also raising tens of billions of dollars. The goal of that effort is to acquire equity stakes in companies it believes will be disrupted by Prometheus’ technology, such as engineering, design and architecture firms. Chery Commercial Vehicle has launched the DELIVAN brand, a new electric-first competitor which arrives in an increasingly competitive electric van market. The brand debuted at this week’s Commercial Vehicle Show – showcasing an electric light commercial vehicle, alongside concepts for a micro cargo van and fully autonomous ‘robot cargo’ vehicle. The UK is the first country in Europe that DELIVAN will enter, and the brand’s European headquarters will also be based in Liverpool, in the UK. The brand is expected to reach other European territories further down the line. With potential cost savings being one of the key factors in operators making the switch to electric and zero-emission commercial vehicles, DELIVAN will heavily press on these models being connected vehicles – with elements such as real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and continous optimisation baked into the vehicles from day one. Such data will also be stored on European-based servers, ensuring that operators using these vehicles comply with data privacy laws across the region. By entering the European commercial vehicle market, DELIVAN will not only be taking on established players in the commercial sector such as Ford and Stellantis, but also other newcomers to the commercial market, such as Geely-backed Farizon. There’s no word on pricing or exact models yet, but DELIVAN CEO Jolly Yang did confirm at the launch that sales are expected to start from the first quarter of 2027. Outside of the commercial vehicle scope, this launch is also a broader sign of Chery’s growing ambitions in Europe. The Creator Card, which Visa calls the first of its kind, is being introduced in response to the U.K.’s fast-growing creator space, the companies said in a Tuesday (April 21) news release. The goal is to let creators access financial tools to run and expand their businesses. “Currently, creators who earn income through TikTok LIVE typically manage their finances through their personal bank account,” the release said. “Visa research amongst creators on multiple social media platforms shows that 86% of creator-run businesses are self-funded and 49% experience late payments, highlighting the ongoing cash flow challenges they face.” The card lets creators access tools to separate their business and personal finances. During TikTok Live broadcasts, creators are rewarded via virtual gifts that can ultimately be exchanged for real income. “This income typically arrives in bursts, rather than on a regular monthly salary, meaning short delays between earnings settling in their account which can make it harder to cover everyday costs or reinvest in their business,” Visa said. The Creator Card is the latest in a series of creator-focused partnerships for Visa. Most fleet managers at small and mid-sized organizations haven’t moved to electric vehicles but many are preparing to as states adopt EV-fleet requirements, according to a survey by a company that provides EV fleet services. Since California adopted a zero-emission fleet requirement for state agencies in 2012, about a third of states have adopted something similar, including for private organizations, and more states are looking at their own requirements. Fleet operators say the transition to EVs would be easier if there were a bigger selection of trucks, particularly larger ones, and better mileage range and payload options, according to Mitra, an EV services company that surveyed fleet managers at 300 small and mid-sized organizations in four states: California, Colorado, Georgia and Ohio. Access to one-stop shops that provide the vehicles and oversee installation of the on-site charging infrastructure would also help, the survey showed. In the ideal scenario, “they dig the holes and they run the line and they put in the charger and they bring in the truck and they go, ‘there you go,’” a fleet operator in the survey report said of one-stop shops. “If you get somebody who can do all that in one package, then that’s something to look at.” Many states offer incentives to help organizations transition fleets to EVs but being aware of and navigating the rules to get the assistance isn’t easy, the survey found. “With all the things that a person like myself has going on, we don't always have the time to dive into it and find out what that assistance is," one manager quoted in the report said.
