Police search for reckless drivers after street takeover in Maspeth, Queens

MASPETH, Queens (WABC) -- Days after nearly 100 cars took over an intersection in Queens, officers with the NYPD have released new pictures of the suspects they are looking for. The drivers took over an intersection in Maspeth, Queens over the weekend, blocking traffic and performing dangerous stunts around a ring of fire in the street. Police say eight people in total are responsible for creating the chaos over the weekend. They say it wasn't only disorderly, it was dangerous. Some neighbors were outraged that their intersection at 69th Street and Elliott Avenue saw open flames so close to two gas stations. Moustafa Dawod works at the BP gas station nearby. "It's kind of crazy to light a fire circle in the middle of two gas stations," Dawod said. "It's just stupid and also it looked like they were trying to throw bottles or something with liquid in it which is dangerous." Officers said they arrived within minutes to break up the dangerous scene. At one point, two men jumped onto the hood of a marked NYPD vehicle, causing damage and cracking the windshield. Luckily, no one was hurt. New York City Council member Phil Wong, who represents the district, says he will meet with Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Tuesday. "We never had enough police officers so when I meet with the commissioner tomorrow I will make that request," Wong said. "We need more police officers and patrol cars." But once that data is sent to the manufacturer via the cloud, it's safe from prying hands, right? A new teardown of a vehicle's computer shows that's not the case. Your car stores that data, in some cases forever. Santa Claus Has Nothing On Your Car's Tracking Connected cars have been controversial since they first launched. If the car knows where you are, then the company knows where you are. If the company knows, then both good and bad actors can find it. Because of that danger, some countries have regulations that cover how it should be secured. The EU even has rules that demand updates over-the-air to try and help fix any security vulnerabilities that get uncovered. But it's not enough. Romain Marchand with cybersecurity consultants Quarkslab wanted to find out if they could get location data directly from a vehicle. Marchand then used that data along with open source intelligence to find shocking amounts of information. Marchand started with a Telematics Control Unit (TCU) from a BYD Seal. He picked the BYD because "some Chinese vehicles have raised security concerns; for instance, Poland has banned certain models from its military bases." The US has also implemented a ban on Chinese connected vehicle tech, though we don't have any reason to think cars from any other country are better in this way. Brandon Pypkowski knows not everyone likes donks, but he’s partial to these particular cars. That’s why the Detroit man builds them at his garage, Well Connected Customs, on Gratiot Avenue, north of downtown near the Faygo plant. On a recent afternoon as he sat near a few of his creations, Pypkowski attributed any dislike of the big-wheeled car's style to a misunderstanding. Donks aren’t just any cars with big wheels, he said. They’re specifically customized 1971-1976 model year Chevrolet Caprices and Impalas. They were full-sized, affordable family cars in their day, and lots of people have told Pypkowski, 39, they remember their families had them growing up. But now, Pypkowski builds them to stand out. “They’re not hot rods, but we turn them into hot rods. They have a lot of characteristics of Chevelles, your Camaros, your Corvettes, as far as suspension and engine goes, but they have the ride of a Cadillac,” he said. “You see a big old car like this that somebody’s grandma would drive to the grocery store and pick up her groceries, but it’s got a 1,200-horsepower motor and it don’t look like it.” A few cars come to Pypkowski in good enough condition that they will keep a lot of what they had originally, with key upgrades. LG Innotek's Automotive Wi-Fi 7 Communication Module will be integrated into Audio, Video, and Navigation(AVN) systems, which will then be delivered to the global OEM customer. By commercializing its first Automotive Wi-Fi 7 communication module from 2005, LG Innotek expects to cement its leading position in the global automotive connectivity solution market. LG Innotek's Automotive Wi-Fi 7 Communication Module supports an ultra-wide bandwidth of 320MHz, doubling the bandwidth per channel (width of the path radio waves travel) compared to existing Wi-Fi 6E (6th Generation Extended) modules. Consequently, data throughput and transmission speeds are three times faster than before. The module is also equipped with 4K-QAM technology which increases the data processing quantity by 20%. Furthermore, LG Innotek designed the module to support up to two antennas by applying Multiple-Input Multiple-Output(MIMO) technology which helps significantly reduce signal loss. RadioDNS demonstrates hybrid radio at NAB

RadioDNS is showcasing its hybrid radio technology at the 2026 NAB Show, where the organization plans to demonstrate how broadcasters and platform partners can implement its open standards. The group will focus on the practical deployment of its technology in broadcast and connected environments. RadioDNS said the demonstrations will highlight how broadcasters can integrate hybrid radio functionality into their services. Alongside its NAB presence, RadioDNS is promoting its next Automotive Workshop, scheduled for May 12 in London. The in-person event is designed to bring together broadcasters, automotive manufacturers and technology providers to discuss challenges in the connected-car environment and the development of hybrid radio services. RadioDNS said its workshops are intended to support “more meaningful, productive discussions,” enabling participants to engage directly with industry peers on technical and operational issues.
