Telematics sits where telecommunications meets informatics. In plain language, it is the system that lets a vehicle or asset collect data, send it somewhere useful, and turn that data into a decision. Modern telematics setups often use GPS, on-board diagnostics or similar vehicle interfaces, a cellular connection, and software that can read everything from location and speed to idling, fuel use, tire pressure, battery voltage, faults, and harsh driving events. That is why telematics is no longer just a tracking tool. It is a live data pipeline built around movement. Why telematics has moved far beyond basic tracking The bigger story is not that telematics exists, but that connected vehicles are becoming mainstream. McKinsey expects95% of new vehicles sold globally to be connected by 2030, up from 1% with level three or four autonomous-driving capabilities in 2025. At the same time, Fortune Business Insights estimates the global vehicle telematics market at USD 93.61 billion in 2025, rising to USD 198.69 billion by 2034. Those numbers show a shift in what people expect from vehicles. A car, truck, or machine is increasingly treated as a data source, not just a physical object. The data telematics collects, and why that matters The reason telematics is useful is that it makes behavior visible. A system can show where a vehicle went, how long it sat still, how hard it braked, whether it was driven aggressively, and whether warning codes suggest a maintenance issue. A 2024 systematic review found that in-vehicle telematics has been widely used to monitor driving behavior and insurer risk, and that speeding, braking, and distance are among the most useful variables. ‘Made in China’ EVs are taking over the streets, but just how safe is your data? Beijing: Under the bright lights and flashy displays at China’s annual auto show, electric vehicle companies are pulling out all the stops to lure in customers and push further into overseas markets. China’s EV golden child BYD sought to wow audiences with its five-minute “flash” charging technology, even setting up a frozen cage set to minus 30 degrees to demonstrate their vehicles could charge in sub-zero climates. Xpeng spruiked its inhouse “super brain” AI chip that powered its vehicles’ autonomous driving functions. The same chip, it says, will enable its prototype flying cars to be mass-produced and take to the skies by 2027. Other companies deployed humanoid robots alongside the vehicles to help capture the attention of live-streaming influencers at the show. On their home turf, Chinese EV brands are locked in a price war death spiral. With the exception of BYD and a handful others, most brands are unprofitable and face collapse when state subsidies and tax breaks dry up. China’s Chery has shipped the first vehicles to Canada, according to pictures shared on social media this week showing several J5 from the sub-brand Omoda & Jaecoo parked in Toronto. Reddit user ‘keredkill’ shared images on Thursday of four vehicles — two from each brand — parked near Toronto’s Don Valley Parkway. “I just saw 4 car in a parking lot with the make JAECOO and OMODA,” the user wrote. They noted that the Omoda-branded vehicles had their logos partially concealed, as though the company was trying to hide the brand identity. “I had to type guess the brand lol,” they added. The vehicles displayed license plates bearing the brand names and models. It is not confirmed whether they are officially registered in Canada, leaving their legal status for road use unclear. Omoda & Jaecoo is Chery‘s export-focused brand, designed exclusively for overseas markets. Chery was China’s largest car exporter last year, with over 1.2 million vehicles shipped overseas. Through Omoda & Jaecoo, Chery already sells vehicles across Europe, South America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The images mark the first time that Chery‘s vehicles were spotted in Canada. Both the UPC and Munich Regional Court granted anti-suit injunctions against a Chinese interim licence applied for by Geely. 24 April 2026 by Christina Schulze The connected cars dispute between Nokia and Geely, which has been pending since last summer, came to a head this week. After Geely filed an application for an interim licence in China, Nokia successfully filed an anti-suit injunction against a Chinese interim licence with both the Munich Regional Court and the UPC. JUVE Patent does not know the outcome of this week’s hearing in China on the interim licence because the proceedings are confidential. However, Nokia’s defence consists of two anti-suit injunctions against a Chinese interim licence. In the proceedings, the UPC’s Mannheim local division under Peter Tochtermann imposed penalties of around €50 million, similar to those imposed in InterDigital vs Amazon. Munich Regional Court simultaneously granted an anti-suit injunction against a Chinese interim licence relating to the pending proceedings in Germany. The conflict remains tense, as the first oral hearing for an injunction is already scheduled for 21 May at Munich Regional Court (case ID: 7 O 9322/25). It concerns 5G and the infringement of EP 3 566 488. A further oral hearing (case ID: 21 O 9323/25) is scheduled to take place just a few weeks later on 15 July.
