Cybersecurity expert says passkeys offer better protection than passwords PHOENIX (AZFamily) — People manage multiple online accounts with login information that can be problematic. Many choose easy-to-hack passwords and use the same passwords across multiple sites. “The other main reason that they just don’t work anymore is with AI and the advent of AI, it’s increasingly so efficient for hackers to target, socially engineer and target consumers and gain access to those accounts,” said John Bennett, a cybersecurity expert and CEO of Dashlane. Bennett says the better option is a passkey. “Passkeys, they can’t be phished. They can’t be guessed. And they can’t be stolen,” Bennett said. How passkeys work A passkey is basically a two-part digital security key. The site has one part, unique to the URL. The user has the other. “It can be a biometric or it can be a device bound pin but it will be one of those two,” Bennett said. Passkeys are not available everywhere, but they are an option on many large sites. “The leading sites, hundreds of sites, are actively promoting and encouraging consumers to set up a passkey,” Bennett said. Making the switch To make the swap, start small. “It seems insurmountable to say you’ve got 300 plus sites that you’ve got to go fix, and so what I say is take an inventory. You can contact Taylor by email. — Parents, students and teachers in the Kansas City area got a scare on Thursday afternoon, when Canvas, a program used by multiple local school districts and colleges, was apparently hacked, blocking people from using the system. Districts like Blue Valley and Shawnee Mission use Canvas for student assignments and grades, instructional materials, even communicating with parents and families. Its parent company, Instructure, says on its website that more than eight thousand schools and universities use it worldwide. On Thursday, a message from the hackers, a group called "ShinyHunters" appeared on the system, threatening to release information unless a ransom was paid. Friday morning, Instructure said that Canvas was fully operational again. KSHB 41 also received the following statement from Shawnee Mission School District: "We are watching this situation closely because safety and security for our students and staff is a high priority. Currently, we have no evidence that any information was breached. Out of an abundance of caution, we sent reminders to our staff and families that are always best cybersecurity practices. We will continue to monitor and stay in close contact with the vendor." I reached out to a local cybersecurity expert to talk about this, and ask what parents should do if they and their children used Canvas. This is the second breach this month, with hacking group ShinyHunters claiming responsibility.
