INDIANAPOLIS — Several Indiana schools were impacted Thursday by a breach of the nation's most widely used classroom software. Instructure, the company that runs the Canvas learning management system used by more than 7,000 universities, K-12 districts and education ministries worldwide, disclosed the breach to affected institutions this week. The company confirmed names, email addresses, student ID numbers and private messages between users had been accessed before the breach was contained. Students at Indiana University and Ivy Tech Community College told 13News the schools were impacted by the breach. Ivy Tech sent a message letting students and staff know it "was not a breach of Ivy Tech's internal systems or networks," but that the school was affected. Instructure stated that the affected data might have included full names, email addresses, student ID numbers and messages, but that there is no evidence passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers or financial information were exposed. IU administrators advised students and faculty to avoid logging into Canvas with their university credentials out of an abundance of caution. MSD Washington Township, which also uses the Canvas platform in its schools, said the district's technology department is monitoring updates from Instructure, in an attempt to learn more about the potential impact on the district. A spokesperson for Purdue University shared the following statement with 13News Thursday evening. "After an initial assessment, the nationwide Canvas cyberattack appears to have minimal impact on Purdue University and Purdue Global, as Canvas is not our main learning management system. We are still working on a review to ensure we properly identify any potential points of exposure." The criminal extortion group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the attack, alleging it had stolen more than 3.65 terabytes of data, including around 275 million records tied to students, teachers and staff, and shared a

UNR President Brian Sandoval is warning the university community about a cybersecurity incident involving the company associated with Canvas.
Sandoval says the company, named Instructure informed the Nevada System of Higher Education about the data breach but stresses “it is not yet confirmed whether data from the University of Nevada was affected.”
He says a forensic investigation is ongoing but warns that possible compromised data may include names, email addresses, student ID numbers and private Canvas messages. “Instructure reports no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers, or financial information were compromised, and states the incident has been contained.”
While the investigation continues, Sandoval urges the university community to be alert for unwanted emails or messages purportedly from Canvas.

A $1 million grant from Google will soon enable LSU’s Cybersecurity Clinic to expand its free education and evaluation services to industry and government clients across Louisiana, the university announced. The funding, LSU’s first from the organization, will support efforts to protect critical infrastructure statewide, including water treatment facilities, oil wells and chemical plants. “Navigating the recent increase in disruptive cyberattacks on essential services—from local power grids to hospitals—will rely on a strong cyber workforce capable of defending against everyday threats,” said Maab Ibrahim, head of knowledge, skills and learning for the Americas at Google.org, in a statement. “Cyber clinics are a crucial part of this effort. They give students the hands-on experience they need to start careers, while at the same time providing vital, no-cost security services to local organizations that need them most.” The LSU Cybersecurity Clinic was founded in 2023 by Aisha Ali-Gombe, an associate professor in the department of computer science and engineering and a researcher at the LSU Center for Computation & Technology. Ali-Gombe serves as the clinic’s director, supported by three staff members. The clinic trains LSU engineering and business students in cybersecurity and helps them earn industry certifications. Students then deliver free educational seminars and industry-standard security assessments to small businesses across Louisiana. With support from Google.org, the clinic is expanding its reach and programming. Beginning this fall, services will extend to critical infrastructure sectors, starting with public and private water treatment facilities, followed by chemical, petroleum, agriculture, shipping and logistics operations. The clinic will continue serving small businesses alongside these efforts. The funding also allows the program to open participation to students across all majors at LSU and increase training capacity. Wake County Public School System leaders said they are investigating a breach involving the system used to maintain teachers' and students' data across North Carolina. According to the school district, they were notified of a cybersecurity incident involving Canvas, a statewide learning management system run by Instructure. Teachers use Canvas to post their classroom work and lessons for students. Other WRAL Top Stories Instructure said on its website that the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction agreed to use Canvas in 2015 across all state public K-12 schools. Instructure also told NCDPI about the data breach. District leaders said they believe student and staff data may have been accessed, but they didn't find anything indicating that passwords, birth dates, government identifiers or financial information were involved. The school district said it was alerted to the breach on Tuesday, and that it was tied to a cybersecurity incident on April 25. This isn't the first time student data impacted by a data breach. PowerSchool, a company that provided data services across the globe with with data storage more than 60 million students between more than 18,000 customers and more than 90 countries, was involved in a data breach on Dec. 28, 2024. PowerSchool later said it paid a ransom to the hacker responsible for the breach and watched a video of the hacker deleting the data they stole, according to people who were on the call. However, cybersecurity analysts said more state schools could face extortion attempts in the wake of the attack. In August, the State Board of Education transferred all of the student and staff data it had on PowerSchool to Infinite Campus for its statewide system. The school district said that while the breach was a result of Instructure’s system, it is in ongoing communication with them as

Commentary: Anthropic’s Mythos AI marks a cybersecurity moment Singapore cannot ignore Even if Anthropic’s claims about its new AI model are overstated, the deeper challenge Mythos represents is very real, say NCS cybersecurity chief Foo Siang-tse and strategic adviser Shashi Jayakumar. SINGAPORE: Cybersecurity researchers tend to be a hard-bitten lot. Yet even the most jaded took notice when Anthropic announced Claude Mythos Preview on Apr 7. Here was a frontier AI lab withholding its most powerful model for being too dangerous to release to the general public. Independent verification remains limited. But if Anthropic’s claims hold up under scrutiny, Mythos has, in days, surfaced more “zero-day” vulnerabilities than the world's adversaries collectively deployed in a decade. Mythos reportedly discovered thousands of software flaws - called zero-days because they were unknown to developers and could be immediately exploited - across every major operating system and browser, including flaws dating back decades. The claims were startling, compared to what the industry had seen so far. Google's threat intelligence team, drawing on one of the most comprehensive industry datasets, tracked 75 zero-days exploited in the wild across the global software ecosystem in 2024, and 90 in 2025. The broader research community has not had the chance to fully assess what Mythos can do, beyond Anthropic’s handpicked coalition of 12 launch partners. Early signals suggest some of the headline findings may be less unique than advertised. Even if marketing hype runs ahead of reality, Mythos’ capabilities are almost certainly real, directionally. EU cyber plan barring Chinese suppliers will cost US$430 billion: report Brussels’ proposed new Cybersecurity Act would require vast amounts of Chinese equipment to be ripped out and replaced in a slew of industries The European Union’s push to bar Chinese suppliers from its critical infrastructure under a proposed new Cybersecurity Act would cost the bloc a jaw-dropping €367.8 billion (US$431.4 billion) over the next five years, a new study has warned. “Given the highly interconnected nature of Europe’s digital value chains … the resulting cost pressures would be borne across the economy, with small and medium-sized enterprises and end users likely to experience higher sensitivity,” said Liu Jiandong, chairman of the CCCEU, in the report released on Wednesday. Annual losses from the policy are projected to reach €39.1 billion in 2026 and peak at €93 billion in 2028, before plateauing at €91 billion for 2029 and €89.6 billion for 2030, according to the study. Beyond direct hardware costs, the report predicts €102.1 billion in social losses, with €88.3 billion of that driven by delayed digitalisation and green transition costs. The social losses also include €3.3 billion in unemployment assistance – a figure the report said carried significant policy weight despite its smaller size relative to other categories.

Retirement plans have “high balances and low engagement,” which can make them vulnerable to cyber-attacks. So said David Ogg, a business information security officer at Principal in remarks he made at the PSCA National Conference in St. Louis, MO. The Employee Benefit Security Administration (EBSA) flagged cybersecurity as key enforcement priority for this year. Panelists discussed how sponsors can reduce risk for their participants. When polled during the session, 64% of attendees responded that participants’ behavior was the greatest source of cybersecurity risk for their company, with lower values for internal processes and vendor relationships. However, only 21% of attendees said that cybersecurity responsibilities are clearly defined at their firm and only 10% said that they had a documented cyber response policy that is tested annually (45% said they were unsure if they even had one). All polls had around 55 respondents. Ogg added that inactive accounts are vulnerable to fraud because they aren’t monitored as much, and workers in industries that make limited use of computers also tend to check their accounts less frequently. Employers should urge plan participants to check their accounts regularly. How to Protect Accounts The panelists discussed the Colgate-Palmolive lawsuit from 2022. This case featured a woman who lost over $750,000 in retirement savings from a cyber fraud scheme. The case settled in 2024. Ogg explained that multi-factor authentication should be mandatory in retirement plans, but it was only optional for this plan, which is what made it possible for the fraudsters to empty the account. He added that biometric passkeys will likely be more common in the future. Stephen McCaffrey, a senior counsel at National Grid, urged sponsors to negotiate for specific provisions when contracting vendors. It's not just China: American technology companies should brace for new European supply chain security rules too, the key lawmaker reforming the European Union's cybersecurity regulation said on Wednesday.
"I can see the Cybersecurity Act having an impact on U.S. companies if they don't oblige by the rules," Czech Pirate member of the European Parliament Markéta Gregorová, the lead negotiator on the revision of the cyber law for Parliament, said at POLITICO's AI & Tech Week. "They will certainly be affected."
The Commission's proposal to reform the law, presented in January, seeks to address "non-technical" risks linked to third countries — a measure that is expected to affect Chinese vendors mostly. The EU's proposal would mean authorities can designate a country as posing cybersecurity concerns, and companies based there could then be classified as high-risk suppliers.

Commonwealth Cyber Initiative builds global partnerships to tackle cyber threats The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) is strengthening international collaboration by engaging embassy representatives from around the world to address widespread cyber threats. “International collaboration in cybersecurity is critical,” said Luiz DaSilva, CCI executive director. “Cyberattacks cross borders. Working with other countries that have the same values and principles around cybersecurity is fundamental to addressing these challenges. International collaboration will help make our neighborhoods safer, both locally and globally.” CCI hosted its first networking and discussion breakfast — Exploring International Collaboration in Cybersecurity — April 28 at the Virginia Tech Research Center — Arlington. Embassy representatives from 13 countries included Canada, Chile, Denmark, France, India, Italy, Japan, Latvia, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Sweden, Taiwan, and Turkey. “We already have extremely strong research collaborations with countries like Japan, Finland, Ireland, and the UK," DaSilva said. "This event allows us to expand these collaborations to new places." Helping support momentum for Virginia Tech's global distinction priority, CCI has co-organized other successful international workshops, including one in Belgium in 2024 that brought together 60 cybersecurity experts from 10 countries, said Dan Sui, the university's senior vice president and chief research and innovation officer. Another workshop will be held in Istanbul, Turkey, in June to discuss artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. “The work of CCI has reached national as well as global impact,” Sui said. Tatsuya Kurosaka, a project associate professor at the Graduate School of Media and Governance at Keio University in Japan, is part of a Japanese group working with CCI on cybersecurity and talent development challenges. The group is studying how the CCI blueprint can be applied to Japan. “We need to build these kinds of capabilities, especially for the younger generation,” Kurosaka said.
