Dispel launches biometric identity proofing for OT remote access Dispel has added government ID verification, facial matching and liveness detection to its operational technology (OT) remote access platform, allowing organizations to verify the real-world identity of users before granting access to industrial systems. Dispel Identity validates a government-issued identity document and compares a live facial image with the portrait on the document. The company says the process is delivered through an accredited provider to NIST Identity Assurance Level (IAL) 2. “Credentials can be phished or handed off, allowing attackers to use the front door to gain access to your organization’s most important assets,” says Ethan Schmertzler, co-CEO of Dispel. NIST defines IAL2 as an identity proofing process that collects and validates identity and verifies that the applicant is associated with the claimed identity. Dispel describes its identity proofing process in three stages. Resolution confirms that the applicant represents a real person, validation checks if the government-issued identity document is genuine, and verification uses liveness detection and facial comparison to confirm that the applicant matches the portrait on the document. Once verified, the person is assigned an identity record that can be linked to enterprise identity provider accounts, local credentials, and shared vendor accounts. The capability is available within the Dispel Zero Trust Engine. “Dispel Identity is the standard that OT remote access has always needed, giving you the confidence and control to know exactly who is in your system,” Schmertzler adds. This is important in OT environments, where industrial operators may provide remote access to equipment manufacturers, system integrators, maintenance providers, and other third parties. The lawsuit was filed in King County Superior Court by an anonymous woman and names former Pokémon executive Ben Tsai as a defendant. It alleges Tsai secretly recorded employees, children and visitors while they used bathrooms inside the company’s offices. The complaint seeks to represent all women and girls who used the Bellevue bathroom facilities between 2017 and July 25, 2026. The proposed class period extends beyond Tsai’s employment with the company, which ended in January 2026. Filing a proposed class action does not automatically allow one person to represent everyone described in the complaint. The court must first determine whether the claims meet Washington’s requirements for class treatment, including whether the proposed members share sufficiently similar legal and factual issues. The lawsuit accuses Tsai of violating Washington’s Law Against Discrimination by allegedly targeting women and girls because of their sex. Now, thanks to primatologists from Emory University and computer scientists from the Georgia Institute of Technology, capuchin monkeys in a Costa Rican forest preserve have had a similar, real-life experience. The researchers recently published their findings in the American Journal of Primatology. The team started by building a homebrew AI-powered facial recognition program called CapuchinAI. They then installed it on a computer outfitted with a camera and touchscreen, loaded it in a protective DIY box, and included a dispenser to dole out dried forest banana slices. When CapuchinAI detects a monkey’s face, the touchscreen turns on. If the monkey triggers it, the machine dispenses a tasty banana slice. Simple as that. They placed the entire contraption in Costa Rica’s Taboga Forest Reserve and waited. It took a few days, but a dominant monkey soon approached the strange device to investigate. Police use facial recognition near Boardmasters - Published Police are using facial recognition tools near the Boardmasters festival site. Devon and Cornwall Police said the aim was to try to reduce the risk of violence against women and girls, organised serious crime, identify sexual offenders and prevent illegal drugs being brought into the county. The live facial recognition (LFR) tools - which have not been used in Cornwall before - would only be used in the town of Newquay and not at the festival site at Watergate Bay, officers said. Images of people who were not of interest would be "automatically and permanently deleted within seconds" and police would not retain the data, Ch Insp Peter Shabytah said. The force said the LFR technology would operate in real-time "comparing a live camera feed of faces against a pre-determined watchlist", possibly including people wanted in connection with criminal investigations. It said vans using the equipment would be "clearly signposted when deployed" and said images captured of people who were not on a pre-determined watchlist were "instantly deleted forever from the system". "When the system suggests a possible match, trained officers on the ground would review it and decide whether to engage with the person," officers said. Mexico’s largest and most prestigious university has announced that about 58,000 students will have to resit their entrance exam after abnormally high test results raised suspicions of widespread cheating. The National Autonomous University of Mexico (Unam) said the exam would take place in person after its first attempt at a fully remote online version led to a debacle and thousands of annulled results. “The Unam, the home of science, humanities and understanding, knows how to recognie mistakes and self-correct,” the university’s rector, Leonardo Lomelí, said on Monday. “There is no evasion or complacency. There is responsibility and we act accordingly.” Nearly 160,000 students took the entrance exam earlier this summer. The at-home test included an AI-powered webcam to monitor candidates with voice and facial recognition to ensure no cheating took place. But the results indicated that the checks had failed to stop fraud. Between 2021 and 2025 only 3.5% of applicants obtained a score of 100 or more out of 120, but this year the figure was 16%. The proportion of students who achieved a score of 110 or more increased sixfold from 0.9% to 5.5%. Almost 30% of candidates for the medicine programme, among the most competitive undergraduate tracks in the region, obtained a score of 100 or more, compared with 9% last year. Newswise — Flexible terahertz devices are attracting increasing attention for wearable photonics, intelligent communication, flexible imaging, and sensing systems. In these applications, terahertz modulators serve as key components for controlling terahertz signals. However, practical flexible devices are often exposed to bending deformation, which may induce structural changes, information loss, or signal interruption. Therefore, developing terahertz modulators that maintain high performance under mechanical deformation remains an important challenge. Tellurium nanofilms provide a promising material platform for this purpose. Te has a unique helical chain structure, good optical response, high carrier mobility, and ambient stability. When integrated with flexible polyethylene terephthalate substrates, Te nanofilms can form mechanically robust and optically active films for terahertz modulation. In a new paper published in Light: Advanced Manufacturing, a research team led by Professor Qingli Zhou from Capital Normal University and Professor Chen Ge from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, developed flexible Te/PET films for ultrafast all-optical terahertz modulators. This device with broadband and low insertion loss achieved a high modulation depth of 50% on the picosecond timescale and an ultrasensitive response under low pump excitation. These results indicate that Te/PET films can provide the foundation for the development of flexible terahertz functional devices. The researchers further examined the mechanical stability of the device under different bending conditions. The transient terahertz photoresponse remained nearly unchanged after repeated bending cycles and under a small bending radius. This stable response is related to the mechanical tolerance of Te nanofilms and the flexibility of the PET substrate, which help maintain reliable terahertz modulation during mechanical deformation. Cape Chamber deputy president Loyiso Ngqwemla said the total value of the initiative was still being finalised with several technology partners to confirm the value of their contributions. Participating organisations are contributing technology, expertise, operational support and community-based services. Figures Abstract DBSCAN (A Density-Based Algorithm for Discovering Clusters in Spatial Databases with Noise) is a classic clustering algorithm. However, clustering distributed data with privacy protection in edge computing environments is a key challenge for DBSCAN. In this research, we combine federated clustering and DBSCAN and propose two secure federated parameter-free DBSCAN clustering methods, called FDBSCAN and FDBSCAN++. The process involves the following steps: (1) differential privacy is applied to the client data and adaptive DBSCAN is used at each client to identify core points; (2) the clients send the extracted core points to the server, where the server aggregates these to obtain the final global cluster centers (FDBSCAN and FDBSCAN++ use different methods in this step); (3) the final clusters are generated using these global centers. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed two algorithms, we use eight real datasets, including the large-scale image dataset MNIST. Compared with traditional and state-of-the-art (SOTA) improved DBSCAN and federated clustering algorithms, the proposed algorithms achieve better clustering accuracy. In addition, we also apply FDBSCAN++ to image clustering and segmentation tasks, which achieves satisfactory results. Incode has made GovFaceMatch broadly available, giving businesses a way to verify a customer by comparing a live selfie with the portrait held in a participating US state motor vehicle record. For the person completing the check, the process is designed around the phone already in hand. The user scans the barcode on a driver’s licence, gives explicit consent and takes a live selfie. Incode says the match result can be returned in about 10 seconds. The distinction from a standard document-and-selfie check is the source of the reference image. Instead of relying only on the portrait printed on the licence, GovFaceMatch sends the comparison into the participating DMV’s environment and returns the outcome to the organization requesting verification. Incode says it does not receive or store the DMV portrait or the biometric template created from that image. It also says facial biometrics can be deleted immediately after the check, although the organization deploying the service determines the wider verification journey and its data practices. Coverage depends on participating state systems rather than a single national driver database. Incode says the connections available through the service collectively reach more than 95 percent of the US population. GovFaceMatch is part of the company’s GovMatch suite, which connects identity-verification flows to authoritative government records. Incode’s technical documentation shows that the US service can return separate results when licence data is not found and when a selfie does not match the government-database portrait. The mobile flow adds a government-held reference to a familiar remote-onboarding experience, but it is not a consumer app that individuals can use independently. A bank, marketplace or other participating organization must integrate the service and present it as part of its own sign-up or identity-verification process. The study also introduces a new method for measuring how far a single reference well can carry an accurate correlation. The presentation is scheduled for August 19, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. in Room 372A of the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. Authored by Drew Kreman and Kevin Pelton of Devon Energy and Alan Lindsey of HXMX, the study benchmarks HXMX’s automated formation-top picking against traditional manual correlation. The team calibrated the platform on a multi-well calibration set with interpreter-verified tops, then deployed it on an extensive multi-county test set. Automated picks matched expert picks with strong accuracy across most intervals. At the center of the work is Triangulated Cross-Validation (TCV), a method that checks each automated pick against every other well in a set and reports consistency in feet. Across both large and tightly spaced study areas, key formations picked with sub-foot spreads from a single reference well. TCV gives geoscientists a direct, quantitative measure of uncertainty — and defines the practical range over which a verified reference well can be trusted to guide automated picking. Manual well-log correlation is accurate but slow, and it scales poorly across the thousands of wells required for basin-wide analysis. Apple is set to face a class-action privacy lawsuit that could cost it nearly $32.5 billion. As 9to5Mac reports, the lawsuit was brought in 2020 by a group of 10 Apple users in Illinois, who claimed Apple violated the state’s Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) when it collected users’ biometric data without their consent to organize the People album in the Photos app. The People album has been part of the Photos app since 2016. It uses on-device machine learning to recognize people in your photo library and organize photos into separate albums. Though some might find that helpful, facial-recognition features have faced intense scrutiny. In Illinois, BIPA requires companies to notify users and get their written consent before collecting their biometric information. For violating the law through Facebook’s photo-tagging feature, Meta paid nearly $650 million to users in the state in 2022 and a record $1.4 billion to users in Texas in 2024 for a similar violation. As The Times reports, Apple tried to get the Illinois class-action thrown out multiple times. In June, a district judge allowed the class action to move forward, but Apple appealed to the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Last week, the court denied Apple’s appeal, meaning the lawsuit can go back to the district court for further proceedings. According to the report, the class includes 6.5 million customers in Illinois who had photos in the People album between Sept. 13, 2016, and the present. I am an AI sceptic, with too many ethical concerns to simply accept this vision of the future without resistance. At the same time, though, I want to be honest. My relationship with AI is best told in two stories. The first occurred not long ago; I was steadfastly against the use of AI and had managed to keep a healthy distance. But then, working to a tight deadline, I made an error on CapCut that undid me. I had spent three hours editing a video project; trimming, layering, getting every cut exactly right, adding sound effects, visual effects–you get the picture. And then, in one careless moment, I deleted the clips from the project. Beads of sweat started to form on my brow as I frantically tried to restore what I had just done. I couldn’t find a way to do so. I started searching the internet, scouring Reddit threads. They all seemed to say CapCut is a merciless mistress, undoing a mistake like mine was not possible! I am not proud of what happened next: I fell to the floor quite dramatically and moaned. All the while, the clock was ticking, and I was only too aware of my deadline, whilst completely fatigued by the hours of work already burned through. Apple will face a class-action lawsuit alleging it violated Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), in a case that could cost the company more than $30 billion. Here are the details. Apple on the hook for up to $32.5 billion In March 2020, a group of roughly 10 Apple users filed a putative class action accusing Apple Photos’ “People” feature of violating Illinois’ BIPA, which gives citizens “the right to control their biometric information by requiring notice before collection and giving them the power to say no by withholding consent.” BIPA allows for damages of $1,000 for each negligent violation and $5,000 for each intentional or reckless violation. This is the same law that led to a lawsuit against Meta ending in a $650 million settlement over Facebook’s facial-recognition system, which scanned photos to suggest people for users to tag, as well as a separate $68.5 million settlement over allegations that Instagram collected and stored users’ biometric data without consent. Back to the case against Apple, since it was filed in 2020, the lawsuit has undergone four amended complaints, years of discovery, and multiple attempts by Apple to have the claims dismissed, before the court ultimately granted class certification in June. Based on the certification document spotted by The Times (via AppleInsider), the plaintiffs are seeking to represent roughly 6.5 million from three proposed classes: - Local Device Class: Every Illinois citizen whose Apple Device put a photograph of that citizen into a People album at any time between September 13, 2016, and the present. - iCloud Subclass: Every Illinois citizen who had an Apple Device with a People album tagged with that citizen’s name or other identifier, and had an iCloud account enabled for photo storage, at any time between September 13, 2016, and the present. - iCloud Faceprint
