Matthew Bassiur received the Global Leadership in IP award at the Luxury Law Awards, part of Luxury Law Summit London, which took place on 9 June. He is vice president and head of global IP enforcement at Alibaba. He began his career as an assistant district attorney at the New York County District Attorney’s Office and later served as a prosecutor in the computer crime and IP section of the US Department of Justice. He held senior roles at Apple and Pfizer before joining Alibaba in 2016. He spoke with the Global Legal Post about his career, issues of online enforcement and hidden sales, the importance of anti-counterfeiting protections and his early desire to be an astronaut. What was your path to becoming head of global IP enforcement at Alibaba? My path to Alibaba has been shaped by seeing IP enforcement from every angle. I began as an assistant district attorney in the Trial Division of the New York County District Attorney’s Office under Robert Morgenthau, where I specialised in prosecuting trademark counterfeiting and Asian organised crime. That gave me a ground-level understanding of how counterfeit networks operate and how law enforcement can dismantle them. From there I became a federal prosecutor in the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section of the US Department of Justice, prosecuting large-scale, multi-jurisdictional IP crimes and coordinating domestic and international enforcement training and outreach. That experience taught me how to build cross-border cases and how to best partner with foreign governments. I then moved to the private sector. Mitek’s passive liveness impresses in biometric image benchmark Results are beginning to emerge from the latest challenge in the LivDet biometric liveness detection competition series, with Mitek Systems revealing strong results in the category that most closely matches real-world applications of its technology. The company reports that its biometric facial liveness detection algorithms produced the three highest results in the image category of the 2026 LivDet-Face competition. The Center for Identification Technology Research (CITeR) organized the test in collaboration with Clarkson University and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In the image category, organizers ran submitted biometric algorithms against a collection of bona fide and attack images that had not been disclosed to participants. This tests if a presentation attack detection (PAD) algorithm can recognize attacks outside the data available to its developer. Mitek describes its technology as passive liveness detection, and emphasizes the benefit of avoiding introducing friction with fraud prevention technologies. “These results reinforce our commitment to deliver AI-powered identity verification that helps organizations strengthen security while providing seamless digital experiences,” says Garrett Gafke, chief operating officer at Mitek. Mitek says it built its liveness detection with an ensemble of models trained using proprietary datasets that included demographic and device diversity and more than 20 presentation attack types. Participating companies had to submit their PAD software into Docker containers in PNG or JPEG files. Organizers executed the containers on servers at Clarkson University. The environment included Intel Xeon processors, an Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU, and 128GB of memory. Abstract Advances in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) have prompted interest in its application in sensitive fields, including mental health. Yet the validity of its nonverbal social-cognitive abilities remains unclear. This study addresses two issues that probe GenAI’s social intelligence: its capacity to interpret nonverbal channels (bodily gestures and vocal tone) with accuracy comparable to humans, and whether accuracy of emotion recognition is different by emotional valence. Emotion recognition accuracy of three Gemini GenAI models (Pro 1.5, Pro 2 (Experimental) and Flash 2) were evaluated using the EU-Emotion Stimulus Set of bodily gestures and vocal tone depicting basic emotions. Model accuracy was compared to validated human benchmarks. Advanced GenAI models achieved near-human accuracy in recognizing emotions from vocal tone. However, their performance was significantly lower than that of humans in interpreting bodily gestures. GenAI models recognized positive emotions more accurately than negative ones. This bias was significant across all models for bodily gestures and in the advanced models for vocal tone. GenAI models exhibit a non-humanlike social-cognitive profile, excelling with positive emotions but struggling with the negative content. This finding carries profound clinical and theoretical relevance, highlighting the risks of integrating GenAI into sensitive fields and underscoring the need for continued validation. Facial recognition technology lead to no arrests in one Suffolk town. The system processed 51,833 faces in Bury St Edmunds and checked them against a watch list containing 793 people. Suffolk Constabulary used the technology in the town centre on August 26 as part of a three-day operation across the county. The force says live facial recognition is used to help locate people wanted in connection with serious offences. The technology compares live camera feeds with images on a predetermined watch list. Facial recognition cameras deployed in Ipswich last week analysed more than 27,500 faces and led to two arrests, Suffolk Constabulary has confirmed. The technology was used on Tavern Lane between 10.20am and 1.50pm before moving to Upper Brook Street, where it operated from 1.58pm until 4.40pm. During the deployment, 771 people were on the watch list, while 27,531 faces were processed. The cameras generated five alerts, resulting in two arrests. One of those arrested was wanted in connection with an outstanding domestic violence assault. The second was arrested for breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. The figures mean that, of the more than 27,500 faces analysed, five generated alerts and two people were arrested. When New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani threw his support behind a ban on biometric scanning last month on privacy grounds, he helped pull a majority of the city council into supporting the bill. That’s alarming some business interests. The bill’s approach is so broad that facilities using the technology for security and workplace management could face lawsuits even if they’re adhering to privacy protections the city has put in place specifically for the technology, a security advocate says. “There are very robust laws in place regulating electronic access systems,” Jake Parker, senior director of government relations at the Security Industry Association, told Facilities Dive in an interview. The city enacted two laws in 2021 targeting biometric scanning. The Biometric Identifier Information Law provides privacy protections to organizations' use of facial, iris, fingerprint and other types of scanning, and the Tenant Data Privacy Act governs landlords’ use of scanning in residential properties. Lawmakers say the latest bill is needed to stop sports and entertainment facilities and other public-facing businesses, like arenas, stores, restaurants and bars, from using facial recognition to monitor who’s on their premises. “No one should have to surrender their personal privacy in order to watch their favorite sports team,” Samuel Levine, the city’s commissioner of consumer and worker protection, said at a press conference last month outside of Madison Square Garden when he announced Mamdani’s support. Over the past two years, the Georgian government has built a comprehensive face recognition enforcement system, procured by a Moscow-based company with ties to the Federal Security Service (FSB), and its impact on demonstrators is troubling. In mid-March 2025, Nino, a Georgian in her 40s, received a call from the Tbilisi City Court, which summoned her to a hearing for blocking a road in the Georgian capital city two and a half months earlier. The call took her by surprise. Nino had protested against the alleged rigging of the last elections as well as the suspension of EU integration talks. She had known for a long time that the protest site surrounding the Georgian Parliament was covered with surveillance cameras, but had not considered them to be so effective at identifying her. At the hearing, Nino saw footage of herself at the protest; she was accused of initiating a blockade of the road. The system had identified her through face recognition software and processed her as an unlawful protester — the imposed fine amounted to GEL 5,000 (around EUR 1,620 or USD 1,878). Five months later, Nino’s bank accounts were frozen. She was forced to set up a crowdfunding campaign to pay off the fine. Like many others in Tbilisi, Nino could not afford the risk of receiving any more fines and largely stopped protesting. The term neurodivergence is used when perception, thinking, and information processing deviate from what is considered neurotypical – that is, “normal”. Perhaps it’s the colleague at the desk opposite, the woman from the bookstore, or the child in the neighborhood. Estimates suggest that about 15 to 20 percent of the population is neurodivergent – roughly one in seven to one in five people. Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and other forms of neurological diversity have long been part of our social everyday lives, even if neurodivergence often remains invisible. Simply put: Autism is a different operating system. Not better or worse, but different. The same world provides the data – but the information is processed, weighted, and linked differently. As Western countries grapple with the moral and security implications of facial and body recognition camera systems, individual citizens are making their voices heard through unique pushback. Artist Simon Weckert recently showed 404 Media some unique shirt designs he's made, and they don't just look cool, but actively confuse smart camera systems so they don't even see you as a person. While that might be hurtful if your mom said it, it's exactly the response Weckert was going for with his shirt design. His version of digital camouflage—something we also covered last month with the noRecognition project—can confuse AI algorithms and make them unable to detect you were even in the frame. As AI is relied upon more for image recognition, you could slip through digital surveillance unnoticed if human oversight isn't part of the system. Many modern security camera systems, including the ones Weckert wanted to thwart, use a "You Only Look Once" family of image recognition models. So he downloaded them and used them to practice and see what they can detect and what they can't. Through experimentation, he found certain patterns would throw the models off so much that they became practically useless for detecting people. "The problem is that we don't know what technology is behind these camera systems," Weckert said, "so therefore I cannot claim 100% that the t-shirt works against this specific camera system, but I can say I know it works for the very public and famous YOLO algorithm." NORTH PORT — The North Port Police Department is seeking a contract with a facial recognition software firm to help in investigations. The software uses artificial intelligence. On Tuesday, a notice of intent to acquire facial recognition software from Clearview AI was announced by the city of North Port in an email. The cost of the service, according to the announcement, is $11,400 for the first year. The second year’s rate is $28,500. Clearview AI, according to its website, is an “American technology company that provides a powerful facial recognition search engine primarily to law enforcement and government agencies.” More than 3,100 law enforcement agencies across the globe use the service, according to the Clearview website. “Clearview AI works by matching an uploaded photo of a face against a massive database of tens of billions of publicly available images scraped from social media, news sites, and the internet,” Clearview AI’s website states. “It converts facial features into unique mathematical vectors to find similar matches within seconds.” Some residents saw the news about the intention of NPPD to acquire the new service and voiced concerns on social media. Concerns over surveillance has become prevalent with the subject of Flock cameras, for example, growing in popularity. The city of North Port does not have Flock cameras; however, it does have other types of cameras across the municipality. NPPD Deputy Chief Chris Morales said facial recognition software is not uncommon, and Clearview is an investigative tool used by law enforcement when a surveillance photo of a person cannot be made out. Lancashire Police is to launch the use of Live Facial Recognition, helping prevent and detect crime, while protecting the most vulnerable in our county. The first deployment is to take place in Blackpool on Friday, September 4, ahead of and during the Illuminations Switch On show. The technology is seen as a vital tool to help quickly identify and apprehend those who pose the greatest risk to our communities. Ch Supt Chris Hardy, of Lancashire Police, said: “LFR compares faces captured on a live camera feed against a predetermined, secure watchlist of individuals wanted for serious offences, subject to court orders, or who pose a risk to the public or to themselves. “When the system identifies a possible match, a police officer will compare the image on screen with the person in view and decide whether to speak to them. This decision will always be made by an officer, not the technology. “Officers will always explain why they have engaged with someone and provide an information leaflet with contact details. “I want to be clear with people – we take your privacy very seriously - if you are not on a watchlist we will never store your biometric data from passing through the LFR zone of recognition. It is immediately and automatically deleted, ensuring privacy is protected. “Any further images are deleted within 24 hours after each day of deployment and CCTV footage is deleted within 31 days, the same as standard public cameras.” LFR has been successfully used by the Metropolitan Police and South Wales Police since 2017 and is being trialled at several forces including Merseyside, GMP, Sussex, Hampshire, Essex and Bedfordshire. Independent oversight and regular reviews will ensure the technology is used responsibly and proportionately.
