The Metropolitan police have said organisers of this weekend’s Unite the Kingdom and March for Palestine demonstrations will be held responsible for any hate speech connected with the events, in what they expect to be “one of the busiest days for policing in London in recent years”. Tens of thousands of people are expected to march in the capital for the Unite the Kingdom event in central London and the Nakba: 78 March for Palestine from south Kensington to central London. Senior officers said protesters would face “the highest degree of control”. The FA Cup final is also due to be held at Wembley on Saturday. In a briefing, James Harman, a deputy assistant commissioner, said a “zero tolerance” operation of “unprecedented” scale would include 4,000 officers, at a cost of £4.5m, and “swift and decisive” action against disorder and hate speech. Live facial recognition will be used in an area of Camden where Unite the Kingdom attenders are expected to gather outside the event itself, “comparing the faces of those walking past, with the faces of those on a specific watchlist”, Harman added. It is not expected that facial recognition will be used on pro-Palestine marchers. The Bronx School of Hip Hop is set to open its doors in Claremont in September as the first-of-its-kind city public school that uses the genre music famously pioneered in the borough as a “vehicle for learning.” “It’s a rigorous, future-ready New York City public school that is innovative and responsive to the community’s needs and really exposes our students to different pathways to really show their intelligence,” said incoming principal Jason Reyes. While its name might conjure up a different idea, Bronx School of Hip Hop won’t be going to rap class in the morning before heading to a DJ session. Instead, educators will teach the standard state curriculum through the lens of five core elements of hip hop culture. “M-ing, DJing, Graffiti, Breaking, and Knowledge of Self — these connect directly to literacy, mathematics, science, technology, entrepreneurship, media and then cultural leadership. It’s not like we have these music electives. It’s more like hip hop is embedded through the academic program as a rigorous framework,” explained Reyes, a born-and-raised Bronxite. “So MCing is still the English language. Ericsson, China Mobile, and Oppo completed China Mobile’s first consumer-oriented user equipment (UE)-level slicing and application-level slicing test on a live 5G standalone (SA) commercial network. According to Ericsson, the trial validated network slicing combined with AI-powered service recognition at the UE level to deliver differentiated service experiences. The field verification, which was carried out in Dezhou, Shandong province, covered uplink livestreaming, short-video download and upload, usage of AI-powered glasses, and mobile gaming. Ericsson said the test achieved fine-grained resource allocation and isolation at both user and application levels, with validated results for typical services in guaranteed throughput and latency optimization on the existing 5G network. The work builds on existing network capabilities by extending UE-level slicing to specific users and terminals, while application-level slicing uses UE route selection policy (URSP) to support an end-to-end process; a complete technical validation chain; and the ability to host applications on slices for enhanced service capabilities in China Mobile’s 5G SA network. Under the hood Within the livestreaming and short-video scenario, the application-level slicing test created a closed-loop process around stutter detection and slice switching. A live facial recognition (LFR) technology trial on a busy south London street led to 170 arrests over six months, according to the Metropolitan Police. The pilot took place in Croydon town centre between October 2025 and March 2026. Over this period, the Met said LFR technology led to a 10.5% reduction in crime compared with the same period the previous year. Violence against women and girls offences saw the biggest reduction, falling by 21%. Arrests included a 36-year-old woman wanted for more than 20 years for failing to appear at court for an assault and a 41-year-old man wanted for rape relating to an incident in November. The pilot marked the first time that the Met in London has operated LFR deployments without the need for a police van. Previously, the cameras were mounted on vans and could only be used when officers were present in the vehicle. Instead, the pilot saw LFR cameras mounted on existing street furniture – such as lamp posts – at two locations on either ends of North End, a pedestrianised road in Croydon town centre. Cameras are only activated during deployments, when officers are present on the ground with fellow officers monitoring the camera feeds remotely. If there is an alert and someone is identified by the system, officers on the ground will talk to them and make any necessary arrests. Angela Lipps says she has never been to North Dakota. She says she had never even been on an airplane. That didn't stop the U.S. marshals from showing up at her home in Tennessee and arresting her. Lipps, a 50-year-old grandmother of five from Elizabethton, Tennessee, was taken into custody in July 2025 in connection with a bank fraud case more than 1,000 miles away in Fargo, North Dakota. She was not released until around Christmas Eve, meaning she spent more than five months in custody before the case was dismissed. The technology maps key facial features into a biometric template to identify potential matches. Any match is then reviewed by an officer, and all images and biometric data are deleted - either immediately or within 24 hours - if no further action is required. ACC Massey added: "It is another tool at our disposal in our drive to reduce crime and create a safer county. "While this capability is new to Cambridgeshire, it has been used across policing and security services for some time and has improved greatly, even outperforming its anticipated accuracy and success rate. Abstract The identification and management of grocery items in retail environments have traditionally relied on barcode-based systems, which require significant human intervention and underutilize existing surveillance infrastructure. Computer vision–based approaches offer a promising alternative for automated product recognition. However, many existing grocery datasets remain relatively homogeneous or limited in scale, geographic diversity, or real-world variability. To support more realistic evaluation settings, we present a large-scale grocery dataset collected from eight stores across multiple states in India. The dataset comprises over 13,000 images spanning 349 product categories and captures practical retail challenges such as dense shelf arrangements, occlusions, viewpoint variations, and visual ambiguity. Rather than claiming novelty in addressing these challenges individually, our contribution lies in systematically integrating them within a unified and diverse dataset framework. We also introduce a lightweight product identification pipeline based on omni-scale feature learning, designed to balance representational capacity and computational efficiency. The proposed model achieves a mAP@0.50 of 58.3, a precision of 72.9%, and a recall of 77.9% on the proposed dataset, demonstrating competitive performance while maintaining a compact architecture. Comprehensive comparisons with established benchmark models further contextualize our contributions within the broader literature. An award-winning photographer is in focus once more after being recognised on the global stage. Denise Brady, owner of Lowestoft-based Denise Brady Photography, has gained international recognition as one of the top international women entrepreneurs of 2026 at the International Women Awards. She received the award in recognition of her work that has helped businesses elevate their visibility through powerful, story-led imagery. Known across East Anglia for her work in branding, food, events and commercial photography, Mrs Brady established her photography business in Lowestoft in 2013. Federal prosecutors announced charges Tuesday in the 2024 collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, accusing the Singapore-based operator of a ship and a key employee of making critical decisions that led to the disaster and the deaths of six people. The indictment names Synergy Marine Pte Ltd., based in Singapore, and Synergy Maritime Pte Ltd., based in Chennai, India. Radhakrishnan Karthik Nair, 47, an Indian national who was technical superintendent for the Dali container ship, was also charged. The Dali crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, 2024, killing six construction workers who had been filling potholes. “The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge was a preventable tragedy of enormous consequence,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. The companies and Nair are charged with conspiracy, willfully failing to immediately inform the U.S. Coast Guard of a known hazardous condition, obstruction of an agency proceeding and false statements. An FBI investigation into the crash focused on the vessel’s operations and whether the crew knew of critical systems issues before leaving port. The National Transportation Safety Board found last year that two electrical blackouts — one caused by a loose wire aboard the Dali and another by problems with a fuel pump — disabled the controls of the huge cargo ship before it crashed into the bridge. The Dali was leaving Baltimore bound for Sri Lanka when its steering failed because of the power loss. The ship crashed into a supporting column of the bridge at about 1:30 a.m. Maryland officials estimate it could cost between $4.3 billion and $5.2 billion to replace the bridge, which is expected to be open to traffic in late 2030. Kiwibank has been instructed by the Government to once again look at its options for long-term growth, including revisiting the possibility of partial privatisation. By Corin Dann of RNZ The taxpayer-owned bank had previously looked at raising $500 million in capital from local investors, but ditched that plan last year. The new request is included in a letter of intent to Kiwibank's parent company Kiwi Group Capital (KGC) from State-Owned Enterprises Minister Simeon Brown. "We expect KGC to undertake work on alternative growth scenarios, along with the capital required for these," Brown said. He went on to note in the letter that KGC should now engage with Treasury about how much capital might be required for different growth scenarios. In accompanying Cabinet paper, Brown and Finance Minister Nicola Willis signalled that while the Government wanted Kiwibank to grow into a market disrupter that can boost competition, the Government's coffers were constrained and it was unlikely to be in a position to provide extra capital. "The Crown could continue to be the sole provider, or be one of the contributors, of additional capital," the paper said. "However, this would see Crown funding directed to Kiwibank and away from other priorities. Given the significant constraints we are facing, the Crown is not in a position to support this course of action." The paper also noted that if Kiwibank was to grow and increase competitive pressure, it would need to know in advance that it had access to capital markets. Last year KGC said that the easing of the Reserve Bank's capital settings, combined with Kiwibank's recent $400m Tier 2 capital raise via bonds, meant it could grow without the need for additional equity.
