Some Syracuse Common Council members continue to advocate for a bill that would prevent some businesses from collecting biometric data.
Biometric data encompasses a whole host of information, including the shape of your face, eye color and even how you walk.
Recently, Onondaga County passed a law requiring businesses to notify customers when their biometric data is being collected.
Some members of the Syracuse Common Council are concerned about how that data will be used and its accuracy.
"We talk about embarrassment. We talk about increased interaction with law enforcement. There are a whole lot of negative consequences to being being mis-idenfitied,” said Corey Williams, a Democrat representing the city’s 3rd District.
The Common Council will vote on that bill on Monday.
The proposal comes after Wegmans recently deployed cameras equipped with facial recognition technology at select stores, saying some stores are using the technology to help with misconduct and retail theft, and that it doesn't collect other biometric data and disposes of the images and video after security purposes are fulfilled.

On the morning of July 14, 2025, a team of U.S. Marshals arrived at Angela Lipps’s Tennessee home and arrested her at gunpoint while she was babysitting four young children. Lipps, a 50-year-old grandmother who had never flown on an airplane and had never set foot in North Dakota, found herself charged with eight felony counts of bank fraud in Fargo — a city she had never visited. The arrest warrant rested substantially on a facial recognition match generated by Clearview AI, a commercial system operating on a database of billions of photos scraped from the internet. No one from the Fargo Police Department called to question Angela before the warrant was issued. For 108 days, she sat in a Tennessee jail cell without bail, held as an accused fugitive awaiting extradition to face charges in a state she had never entered. When authorities finally reviewed her bank records in December, they revealed what any interview could have established months earlier: Lipps had been in Tennessee the entire time, her transactions placing her squarely at home while the actual fraud was occurring twelve hundred miles away. The charges were dismissed on Christmas Eve. The Fargo Police Department offered no apology and no explanation for why no investigator had spoken with her during five months of incarceration. The Fargo case is more than a cautionary tale about one flawed investigation. It exposes a growing institutional habit of treating AI outputs not as fallible signals requiring human verification, but as authoritative conclusions carrying near-prosecutorial weight. A Fargo detective reviewed Lipps’s social media and driver’s license, then concluded she matched the suspect based on “facial features, body type and hairstyle and color” — ratifying what the machine had decided rather than examining the evidence independently. Police pounce on man and woman strolling through Piccadilly Gardens after checking their camera It's the latest time the technology has been used in the city Two people have been arrested and a missing man found after live facial recognition cameras were used in Manchester. Greater Manchester Police deployed the technology in the city centre on Wednesday (May 13). Cameras were used in the Piccadilly Gardens area. During the deployment, a 19-year-old man wanted on suspicion of shoplifting offences in Salford was picked up by the cameras. A woman wanted for offences including harassment and breach of bail was also spotted by the technology. Both people were arrested by officers at Piccadilly Gardens. He has since been 'safeguarded' by police, the force says. "The two LFR vans were in city centre to support our neighbourhood policing operation and keep our communities safe," a GMP spokesperson added. Specialist police vans are fitted with fixed cameras, with computers inside using biometric data to match faces in the crowd to those on a 'watchlist'. Washington, D.C. – Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), member of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) today led their colleagues in writing to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin demanding the agency abandon its dangerous proposal, included in DHS’s proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2027, to develop “smart glasses” for its immigration officers. These smart glasses would allow DHS officers to quickly identify individuals in public by covertly taking their photo and running it through biometric identification systems — such as facial recognition software — threatening the privacy and civil liberties of every person in the United States. Smart glasses are the latest example of the Trump administration’s growing surveillance state, which is intended to silence dissent and intimidate Trump’s political opponents. Senators Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) also signed the letter. In their letter, the Senators wrote, “Given DHS’s record during the Trump administration of exploiting surveillance technologies, we are deeply concerned that smart glasses will be abused by this administration. Over the past year, DHS has deployed biometric identification tools — including facial recognition technologies — to identify individuals engaged in protest activity, intimidate them, and deter lawful dissent. The Trump administration seems to relish these practices, which endanger the core democratic right to challenge the government without fear of punishment. An AI Model Just Diagnosed Dog Bone Fractures With 99.76% Accuracy. Here's What That Means for Veterinary Practice. A research team publishing in Scientific Reports has developed a deep learning model that classifies long bone fractures in dogs with an accuracy of 99.76 percent. For context, that is not a marginal improvement over existing tools. That is near-perfect automated diagnostic performance on a task that currently requires a trained clinician, takes time, and is subject to the kind of variability that comes with any human interpretation of radiographic images. The implications for veterinary orthopedics are worth understanding clearly, because this is the kind of research that moves from academic journal to clinical conversation faster than most practitioners expect. What the model actually does The research team, led by Ashraf Sobhy Saber and colleagues from the University of Sadat City and Cairo University in Egypt, built their model around ResNet50, a convolutional neural network architecture with 50 layers that was specifically designed to handle deep image recognition tasks. The model was trained to classify two types of long bone fractures in dogs — oblique fractures and overriding fractures — using conventional radiographic images. What makes this work notable is not just the accuracy number. It is the methodology used to get there, particularly given the constraints the researchers were working with. Veterinary radiographic datasets are small compared to their human medicine counterparts. The team started with just 44 images. Through a combination of data augmentation techniques including rotation, zooming, and fill-mode transformations, they expanded that dataset to more than 8,000 images with balanced class representation. They also integrated a tool called the Segment Anything Model, known as SAM, which allowed the system to automatically isolate the fracture region within each image rather than processing the entire radiograph as noise-inclusive input. Live Facial Recognition (LFR) vans will be operational in Bucks next week.
Thames Valley Police have announced the vans will be present in Market Square, Aylesbury, on Wednesday, May 20.
Police use the technology to try and prevent and detect crime by locating people who are of interest to the police.
In Buckinghamshire, LFR vans have previously deployed to multiple places, including Chesham High Street on 20 April, Market Square on 13 April, and Eden Centre on 3 March.
In a Facebook post, Thames Valley Police Aylesbury Vale said: "The specialist LFR team will be working alongside our local officers to identify known suspects, deter crime and help keep our communities safer for everyone.
"We make sure to let you know before our LFR vans are in use, so everyone stays informed about what’s happening.
"While this can mean some individuals choose to avoid us, the vans can help deter crime and keep the area safer.
"Preventing crime is just as important as catching those who break the law."

A woman wanted for more than 20 years has been arrested during a six-month trial of live facial recognition in south London, reports London Now. She was one of 173 people arrested during a live facial recognition pilot in Croydon, south London, which ran from October 2025 to March 2026. Abstract Predicting T cell receptor (TCR) specificity on the basis of sequence is challenging because TCRs of similar sequence can recognize entirely different antigens, whereas TCRs of different sequence can recognize the same antigens. Here we present a system that integrates high-throughput yeast display with fine-tuned protein language models (pLMs) to generate deep peptide recognition profiles (PRPs) for individual TCRs, each detailing binding against millions of peptides. We provide detailed PRPs for a panel of HLA-B*27:05-restricted TCRs from persons with ankylosing spondylitis and acute anterior uveitis that almost exclusively recognize peptides through CDR3β. pLMs trained on these PRPs outperform AlphaFold3 and tFold-TCR in predicting T cell activation. We discover and validate novel candidate autoantigens, demonstrate that model generalization to new TCRs correlates with functional distance (PRP divergence) rather than sequence similarity and introduce a model-intrinsic uncertainty metric to quantify prediction confidence. This system and its associated PRP datasets offer a scalable approach to mapping TCR recognition, accelerating antigen discovery and guiding TCR engineering. Similar content being viewed by others Main T cell receptors (TCRs) recognize a composite surface composed of antigenic peptide and major histocompatibility complex (pMHC) molecules1. Interrogation of pMHC complexes by the TCR underpins adaptive immunity, orchestrating responses to pathogens, cancer and autoimmunity2,3. Live facial recognition technology (LFR) will be used at a protest for the first time this weekend, targeting a Tommy Robinson rally in central London. Scotland Yard said it was part of “unprecedented” policing measures this weekend as 50,000 people are expected to join Robinson’s Unite the Kingdom march. A separate pro-Palestinian march marking Nakba Day, commemorating the “Palestinian Catastrophe” of 1948, is expected to draw up to 30,000 people on the same day and LFR will not be used. The Metropolitan Police said it would deploy the technology for the Robinson rally on Saturday after receiving “intelligence which indicates there is likely to be a threat to public safety from some who might be in attendance”.
