Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit has shut down a malware-signing-as-a-service (MSaaS) operation run by the threat group Fox Tempest. The illicit service abused the Microsoft Artifact Signing platform to generate digital signature certificates for malicious software. Malware signed by these certificates was observed in campaigns conducted by such ransomware groups as Rhysida, Akira, INC, Qilin, and BlackByte. The service was also leveraged by operators of the Oyster loader as well as the Lumma and Vidar infostealers. To disrupt the operation, Microsoft seized the domain used by the MSaaS platform, revoked all associated certificates, and disabled the related accounts. Additionally, the company filed a lawsuit against Fox Tempest. This article argues that CEOs must shift from protection to resilience by identifying the essential operating core and rethinking compliance, recovery, governance, value-chain risk and the true economics of cyber disruption today. Europe’s cyber threat landscape has changed dramatically since 2022. What began as cyber operations linked to the Russia–Ukraine conflict has evolved into a persistent campaign targeting critical infrastructure, including hospitals, energy networks, transportation systems and financial institutions. The European Union Agency for Cybersecurity, ENISA, reports that both the volume and consequences of attacks increased during 2023 and 2024.[1] Its 2025 threat assessment documented nearly 4,900 incidents across the region.[2] In an era of escalating attacks and digital interdependence, complete prevention is no longer achievable. Leaders are aware of this fact. In our February–March 2026 survey of 329 senior executives across the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, almost 70% said preventing all cyber disruption is no longer realistic given today’s complex technology ecosystem. Shares of state-run telecom equipment maker ITI jumped as much as 4.75% to ₹295.80 on the NSE on Monday, August 10, after it announced a strategic partnership with Airtel Business to offer digital and telecom solutions to enterprises. Under the partnership, ITI and Airtel Business will collaborate on enterprise connectivity, data centre and sovereign cloud services, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI)-powered solutions, cybersecurity and low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite services. The companies said the partnership will focus on helping businesses modernise legacy systems, improve operational efficiency and strengthen digital security. The collaboration will cover connectivity solutions including optical fibre connectivity (OFC), GPON, SD-WAN and private 4G/5G networks, along with secure data centres and sovereign cloud services. The solutions are also expected to target regulated sectors such as banking and public sector undertakings, with offerings including industrial IoT-based asset tracking, AI-powered analytics and cybersecurity solutions. By Patricia Titus Machine identities now vastly outnumber and outrank human ones in most enterprises, yet almost none of them are governed. Machine identities, including APIs, service accounts, tokens, and now AI agents, have quietly become the most powerful actors in the enterprise. Research estimates organisations now manage more than 100 machine identities for every human on. Most security programs still aren’t built to govern them. Patricia Titus, Field CISO at Abnormal AI, argues this isn’t a tooling gap. It’s a governance failure. For years, identity security has been built around people. Logins, MFA, lifecycle reviews, least privilege, all designed to answer one question: does this person have the right access? But now, that question no longer covers most of what’s really operating inside the enterprise. Machine identities, APIs, service accounts, tokens, and most recently AI agents, have overtaken human ones by a wide margin. Palo Alto Networks 2026 Identity Security Landscape report, based on a survey of nearly 3,000 cybersecurity decision-makers, puts the ratio at 109 machine identities for every human one, up from 82:1 just a year earlier. Of those 109, roughly 79 are AI agents. AI agents alone now make up almost three-quarters of the machine identity population, not API keys and service accounts. The scale is only part of the story, however the bigger issue is authority. A CFO can approve a payment, while an API can approve millions. An employee might access one database, but an AI agent can rapidly sweep dozens. These identities don’t log in, so there’s no login to flag. They don’t trigger MFA, so there’s nothing to challenge. When one is compromised, an attacker doesn’t break in. They execute quietly, programmatically, and at scale, often without tripping a single alert built for human behaviour. The liability It created for MSPs isn't Why the CMMC regulation is not dead and what MSPs need to do about it On July 13, 2026, the Department of War suspended the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Phase 2, the third-party assessment mandate that was set to take effect November 10. Within days, managed service providers (MSPs) across the defense channel started fielding the same question from clients: does this mean CMMC is dead? It doesn't. And the MSPs who answer that question wrong are about to hand their most defensible service line to competitors who read the suspension memo more carefully. Reality check Here's what actually happened. Department of War CIO Kirsten Davies suspended the requirement for defense contractors to pass a Certified Third-Party Assessor Organization (C3PAO) audit before winning Level 2 contract awards. She did not suspend Phase 1. Self-assessment, SPRS score submission, and annual affirmation obligations under DFARS 252.204-7012 remain fully enforced, and NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2 stays the standard the Department checks against through self-assessments and select government-led reviews. The reasoning behind the decision was blunt. Davies told reporters “the math just simply doesn’t math” for the roughly 100,000 companies in the defense industrial base needing third-party assessment against the roughly 100 approved C3PAOs able to deliver it, with Small Business Administration data pointing to compliance costs approaching $7 billion a year for small and mid-sized contractors. A CMMC Reform Task Force review is due back to the Department CIO by mid-September, and officials have explicitly declined to rule out ending the third-party model altogether. That's the pattern MSPs need to see clearly. The Department suspended a verification mechanism. It did not suspend the obligation that mechanism existed to verify. Middle schoolers don’t usually spend their summer afternoons cracking secret codes. But inside a computer lab in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, groups of tweenagers gathered one day in May racing through password-cracking puzzles, deciphering secret messages and learning how hackers think. The exercises were part of Desert CodeSprouts, an annual computer science workshop for middle school students hosted by Fulton Schools faculty members. The one-day camp introduces students to cybersecurity, robotics, artificial intelligence, or AI, and privacy through hands-on challenges designed to feel more like games than lectures. For Ozgur Ozmen, a Fulton Schools assistant professor of computer science and engineering, the cybersecurity module wasn’t simply about entertaining students for an afternoon. It was about planting an idea. “If we can teach kids about security early on, then in the future they’ll design technology with security in mind instead of treating it as an afterthought,” Ozmen says. “Hopefully, the next generation will build systems with fewer and fewer security problems.” That approach reflects a recurring theme throughout Ozmen’s early career. He sees mentorship as a continuum, helping students discover cybersecurity in middle school, develop as researchers in college and eventually become mentors themselves. The sooner, the better Cybersecurity often suffers from a familiar problem. Products are designed to be fast, inexpensive and convenient. Security comes later, patched onto systems after vulnerabilities emerge. Ozmen believes education follows a similar pattern. Too often, students discover cybersecurity only after they’ve already chosen a technical specialty. By then, many of the habits and assumptions behind system design are already established. Desert CodeSprouts offers a different approach. Employees travel from office locations, homes, and customer sites and operate across cloud environments. They also access applications and data from multiple devices throughout the day. At the same time, businesses are adopting new collaboration tools, cloud platforms and digital workflows to drive productivity and growth. This has led to a workforce environment that is better connected than ever before, but also much more complicated to secure. “The problem for security leaders is not a lack of information. Most organisations already have a lot of data across endpoints, identities, applications, email systems and access environments. The challenge is making sense of that information. Signals are available across many platforms and tools, but often disconnected from each other, making it difficult to identify emerging risks, understand their consequences and respond with confidence. Modern threats are increasingly operating in trusted environments. Traditional security models were based on the assumption that malicious activity is suspicious-looking. Unusual logins, unknown devices and unauthorised applications were often clear indicators of risk. That assumption is no longer true. Many of today’s threats live within trusted environments. Today, attackers are increasingly turning to legitimate credentials, compromised identities, approved applications and behaviours that look normal on the surface. A user account can be used to access sensitive data from a trusted device. A legitimate application may be the vehicle for exfiltrated information. What seems to be a simple task can actually be the first step in a more extensive compromise. As trust boundaries continue to shift, organisations need to look beyond individual events to understand the relationships among users, devices, identities, and applications to identify risk.
