Advancing open, interoperable smart city networks to help municipalities reduce vendor lock-in and scale future-ready infrastructure. QUEBEC, QUEBEC, CANADA, April 1, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Dimonoff, a globally recognised leader in smart street lighting control, is proud to announce that its parent company, Vectanor Group Inc., has joined the Wi-SUN Alliance as a Contributing Member. This milestone reinforces Dimonoff’s long-standing commitment to delivering interoperable, standards-based IoT solutions for utilities and municipalities worldwide. “Joining the Wi-SUN Alliance reinforces our commitment to open, interoperable infrastructure for cities,” said Daniel Noiseux, General Manager of Vectanor Group. “Municipalities need flexibility to evolve their systems over time, and open standards are key to making that possible.” What is the Wi-SUN Alliance? The Wi-SUN (Wireless Smart Ubiquitous Network) Alliance is a global industry association of more than 300 member organisations across 46 countries. It promotes and certifies interoperable wireless solutions based on open standards, particularly for smart utilities, smart cities, and industrial IoT applications. With over 100 million Wi-SUN-enabled devices deployed worldwide—including large-scale smart lighting networks in cities such as Miami, Paris, and London—the standard has become a leading choice for outdoor IoT mesh networking. Wi-SUN technology enables resilient, self-forming, and self-healing communication networks capable of scaling to millions of devices across wide geographic areas. Why This Matters for Utilities and Municipalities For public utilities and municipalities evaluating smart infrastructure investments, vendor lock-in remains one of the greatest risks. Wi-SUN directly addresses this concern by certifying that products from different manufacturers can operate on a single, unified network. Cities can select best-in-class components — controllers, gateways, sensors — with the confidence that they will interoperate seamlessly, today and for decades to come. Wi-SUN’s enterprise-grade security architecture meets the stringent cybersecurity requirements that critical municipal infrastructure demands: • X.509 device certificates with ECDSA-SHA256 for unique device identity •

Privacy and security enhancement in <b>smart cities</b> using advanced cryptographic techniques

Abstract Smart city technologies are advancing rapidly, creating previously unattainable opportunities for improved services, quality of life, and effective urban management. These improvements, however, can present serious privacy and security threats to sensitive data. The proposed study presents a comparative performance evaluation model - FHE and ABE with Fast Exponentiation Optimization (FA-FEO). To address data security challenges in smart city environment monitoring systems, the proposed study examines the performance of advanced cryptographic techniques, such as attribute-based and homomorphic encryption, in the context of smart cities. An optimization strategy is applied to improve performance. By leveraging Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) for access control and Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) for computations on encrypted data, these cryptographic methods guarantee data confidentiality and flexible access management. Our system evaluates how well FHE and two variants of ABE, Key-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (KP-ABE) and Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (CP-ABE), protect environmental information collected from Internet of Things (IoT) devices, including air quality data. Experimental work is conducted using network simulation to evaluate performance metrics, including key generation and execution times. An optimized key generation procedure increases system efficiency, as demonstrated by performance evaluations. Experimental results demonstrate notable computational gains. Across all schemes (FHE, KP-ABE, CP-ABE), the optimization strategy - fast exponentiation considerably improved efficiency, reducing key generation time from approximately 20–22 s to less than 1s. This corresponds to approximately a 96–97% reduction for KP-ABE, CP-ABE, and FHE compared with the naive approach. Our previous study has already reported other desirable performance evaluation metrics, including PDR, Consumed energy, power consumption, latency, execution time, normalized overhead, speed, throughput, and memory required. Data availability No specific dataset was used for the research described in the article. The data used for the graphs will be made available by the author, K. D. M., upon request. WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, March 31, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Cities worldwide are accelerating efforts to reduce emissions, creating new opportunities for shared-mobility operators to build smarter, lower-carbon fleets. As municipal governments and energy providers collaborate to develop more integrated infrastructure, evolving regulatory frameworks and stricter emissions standards are helping establish a clearer pathway for electrified mobility systems. For carsharing and shared-mobility operators, these developments represent more than a sustainability milestone—they enable the creation of transportation systems that are more efficient, predictable and scalable. Technology is playing a critical role in further reducing the environmental footprint of shared fleets. Intelligent fleet-management platforms are increasingly being used to ensure that vehicles are deployed where and when they are needed most. By predicting demand patterns and strategically positioning vehicles in advance, these systems minimize idle time, increase utilization rates and reduce the overall number of vehicles required to meet demand. Data analytics and artificial intelligence are significantly enhancing these capabilities. Advanced algorithms analyze patterns such as peak commuting hours, weather conditions and major local events to predict where vehicles are most likely to be requested in the near term. This predictive capability allows operators to reposition vehicles proactively, increasing efficiency across the network. The result is a system where vehicles spend more time in use and less time parked, maximizing the value of each vehicle while shrinking the environmental footprint of the entire fleet. Over time, the integration of connected vehicles, AI-driven optimization and autonomous mobility technologies is expected to create a more fluid and resource-efficient carsharing ecosystem. Autonomous Driving and the Next Chapter of Shared Mobility The mobility sector is now entering a new phase shaped by automation, evolving regulations and next-generation infrastructure. Zurich tops the IMD <b>Smart City</b> Index once again | S-GE

Zurich has once again secured top spot in the seventh edition of the IMD Smart City Index. The Norwegian capital Oslo is in second place, ahead of Geneva, which according to a statement covering the report, successfully defended its ranking of third place from last year. In comparison with 2025, Lausanne improved by three places to seventh. For the index, citizens from a total of 148 cities were surveyed by the World Competitiveness Center (WCC) of the IMD business school. As the index showed, citizens also evaluate the quality of their city based on its political transparency and opportunities for participation. The concept of “smartness” therefore encompasses not only the application of cutting-edge technologies, but also a stronger perception of effective city governance and the implementation of digital services. Cities where people feel their voices are properly heard score significantly higher, according to the report. “The most advanced urban centers, where citizens feel happiest, are not necessarily distinguished by their utopian skylines, visible sensor networks, or pure technological sophistication”, comments Arturo Bris, Director of the WCC, in the statement. “Instead, they stand out for how effectively they align governance structures, sustainability priorities, public investment decisions, and perhaps most importantly, the cultivation of citizen trust”, he concludes. Away from the podium places occupied by Zurich, Oslo and Geneva, places four to six go to London, Copenhagen and Dubai respectively. After Lausanne in seventh, the Top 10 is rounded off by Canberra, Singapore and Abu Dhabi.

How Some <b>Cities</b> Are Developing A More <b>Sustainable Future</b>

Cities like Bogota in Colombia and Gujarat in India are leading with the way, with projects designed to build a low-carbon and climate resilient future, according to a new analysis. The report by consultancy Arup and supported by the Earthshot Prize, highlights how urban leaders are already delivering innovations in their own localities, which are cutting emissions and improving the lives of residents. And it argues cities which integrate various policy elements appear able to move more quickly than national governments in translating climate ambition into tangible outcomes, particularly on air quality and emissions reduction. The study contains 11 climate innovations across mobility, air quality, waste, restoration, and finance from various cities. It also comes at a critical time, with cities predicted to house 68% of the global population by 2050. In addition, cities also account for more than 70% of global carbon dioxide emissions and consume around three-quarters of global energy. The report highlights the work being done in Bogotá, Columbia, including the Urban Zone for Better Air strategy. The strategy is a place-based initiative to improve air quality in the parts of the city where higher pollution exposure overlaps with greater social vulnerability. It works alongside another program, FONCARGA, which has designed to modernize the city’s cargo transportation fleet by replacing old, highly polluting vehicles with cleaner, more efficient technologies. And it also comes on top of a public transport electrification program, which has reduced the PM2.5 emissions of the city’s public bus fleet. Bogotá’s environment secretary, Adriana Soto said air quality policy works better when cities treat it as a public health issue, in an interview. Soto added cities should not only rely on city-wide policies, or only on the electrification of transport, but instead take a more territorial approach and look to help the people facing
