The University of Lisbon is partnering with Rock in Rio Lisbon 2026, which takes place on 20, 21, 27 and 28 June, as a University Partner, forming part of the Smart City of Rock initiative – a collaborative ecosystem where technology, creativity and innovation are tested in a real-world context, in a temporary city that welcomes around 100,000 visitors a day. As part of this, ULisboa will bring to the festival research, innovation and entrepreneurship projects developed within its faculties and research units, demonstrating the university’s contribution to addressing the challenges facing the smart cities of the future. Mobility, health, sustainability, technology, engineering, biotechnology, sport and creativity are some of the areas represented through interactive experiences open to the public. ULisboa’s participation in Smart City of Rock also includes the presence of start-ups with the University’s DNA, which will have the opportunity to test their prototypes in a real-world environment through the ‘living lab’ spread across various points within the festival grounds. There is a particular kind of intimacy to a map. It doesn't just show where you are, it shows where you've been, how long you stayed, which routes you prefer, and which places you return to again and again. When we talk about data privacy, we tend to imagine stolen passwords or exposed credit card numbers. Location data is something else entirely. It’s a record of your physical life, rendered in coordinates, and it reveals things about you that no other category of data can. A Trail More Revealing Than a Diary Researchers have demonstrated that as few as four location data points are enough to uniquely identify 95% of people, even in datasets that have had names and obvious identifiers stripped away. This isn't a flaw in the data collection. It's a consequence of the nature of human movement. You live somewhere, work somewhere, and you return to the same coffee shop and gym. That routine, repeated across days and weeks, becomes a fingerprint unlike any other. Unlike a password, you can’t simply change it. The Problem Is Spatial, Not Just Statistical Most privacy frameworks were built for a world of rows and columns including discrete facts that can be encrypted, anonymized, or deleted. Location data doesn't cooperate with that model. It has a structure that’s fundamentally geographic. A single coordinate near a reproductive health clinic, a mental health facility, or a political organizing office carries meaning that has nothing to do with any attached label. The geography itself is the context, and the geography cannot be redacted. This is what makes location data privacy a geospatial problem. When data points cluster around sensitive places, or when movement patterns trace the boundaries of a person's private life, the harm is spatial in nature. Mirroring a nationwide trend, crime rates in Providence, Rhode Island, are at historic lows. Last year, homicides dropped by 90% from 2024. “That’s great progress,” Providence Mayor Brett Smiley told Smart Cities Dive during an interview at the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in Long Beach, California, earlier this month. “We should acknowledge that progress and look to see what lessons we can learn from it. But we also know that’s still not enough. We’re always working toward zero … because if you’re a parent who’s worried about their kid getting to school safely on the bus or you hear gunfire in the middle of the night, no crime statistic can convince you that things are better.” While it’s important to share and celebrate the city’s progress in fighting crime, “the challenge for us is always to show that we’re still committed to doing better,” Smiley said. Kansas City, Missouri, one of the top 10 large cities with the highest crime rate per 100,000 people, also saw substantial drops in some crime rates last year. Mayor Quinton Lucas isn’t shy about sharing the good news — but he’s aware that spouting statistics isn’t enough to erase long-held perceptions. “You can’t tell somebody that they’re a fool if they’re like, ‘No, I just think this place has a problem,’” he said in an interview during the conference. Crime reduction is a story city leaders love to tell. But crime dashboards and statistics don’t automatically translate into feelings of safety, both mayors said. City leaders need to acknowledge residents’ experiences, make themselves visible in neighborhoods affected by crime, demonstrate they’re taking action and share evidence of progress without belittling people’s concerns, they said. Local government leaders resoundingly list housing as their number one concern of the day, but activity around housing in 2026 is “subdued,” according to Daniel McCue, lead author of the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies’ 2026 State of the Nation’s Housing report. “Construction is down, home sales are flat and cost burdens are up,” McCue said ahead of a panel discussion following the report’s release Wednesday. Here are seven takeaways from the report. 1. Economic conditions are weakening housing demand Economic headwinds are showing up in this year’s report as a lack of demand, McCue said. Consumer confidence, job growth and household growth have all tumbled. As a result, new housing construction has softened, with single-family construction dipping 7%. Multifamily home construction, while stronger than anticipated, “failed to overcome the sharp decline in 2024,” according to the report. “Uncertainty and slowing job markets also affect residential mobility, another driver of housing demand that is also falling,” the report states. 2. Vacancy rates are on the rise Rising inventory has also contributed to slower housing construction. After hitting historic lows in 2022 and 2023, national homeowner and renter vacancy rates are on the rise, reaching 1.1% for homeowners and 7.3% for renters in the first quarter of 2026. Both rates remain below historic averages, however, and indicate “at least several hundred thousand” units are still needed to meet demand, according to the report. The trends are also inconsistent across the country and reflect regional housing production levels, with the South seeing the largest vacancy rate rebound and the Midwest scoring the smallest. 3. Lowest incomes continue to be the most impacted In 2024, the number of cost-burdened renters reached a record high of 22.7 million, or 49%, with 12.1 million, or 26%, severely cost burdened. Dive Brief: - The Chicago City Council voted 38-10 Wednesday to buy and renovate a former Greyhound bus terminal for $19.2 million, saving it from possible sale or demolition. The city will finance the project by expanding an adjoining $50 million tax increment financing district to include the bus station. - Advocates including the Environmental Law and Policy Center and Better Streets Chicago, with help from the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at DePaul University, urged the city to take over the bus facility and showed how it could be modernized at a reasonable cost. - The proposed upgrades “were likely the single biggest factor that compelled the aldermen to vote yes,” Chaddick Institute Director Joseph Schwieterman, who attended the council meeting, told Smart Cities Dive. Cities frequently launch smart city initiatives with ambitious goals and strong political support, only to find that many never progress beyond limited trials or demonstrations. Apparently, the challenge is rarely a lack of technology. More often, cities discover that deploying a solution is much easier than integrating it into fragmented institutions, disconnected systems, and long-term public operations. Smart City Projects Rarely Fail Because of Technology Cities around the world continue investing in smart city initiatives that promise better mobility, improved public services, stronger sustainability outcomes, and more efficient urban management. However, international experience suggests that many projects struggle to move beyond the pilot stage. North America’s longest fully-buried transmission line has begun delivering Canadian hydropower to New York City, state policymakers and grid officials said Tuesday. The $6-billion Champlain-Hudson Power Express is expected to deliver 10.4 TWh annually, helping meet up to 20% of the city’s electric needs. Construction was completed ahead of schedule and power flows from Hydro-Québec to New York commenced June 1. Champlain-Hudson will help to replace the Indian Point nuclear plant, which was shuttered in 2021. Since Indian Point’s closure, New York City has relied more on gas-fired plants that have caused emissions downstate to grow, according to a statement from Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul. According to analysis by the Times Union, more than 90% of the capacity lost when Indian Point shuttered its two 1-GW units in 2020 and 2021 was replaced by fossil fuels. The Trump administration has called for restarting Indian Point, but Hochul has rejected that idea. “This project is further proof that despite the unprecedented federal headwinds we are facing, New York will remain a national climate and clean energy leader into the future,” Hochul said. The Champlain-Hudson line was selected in 2021 as part of a solicitation administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, and project developer Transmission Developers Inc. began construction the following year. The 1,250-MW direct current line connects to the grid at the New York Power Authority’s Astoria Annex substation, which was recently expanded. TDI also built a nearly four-mile underground transmission line, the Astoria Rainey Cable, connecting the Astoria Annex to Con Edison’s Rainey substation. The Champlain-Hudson project “illustrates how complex infrastructure can be delivered through sustained collaboration and shared expertise,” Hydro-Québec President and CEO Claudine Bouchard said. “More importantly, it highlights the growing role of interconnected transmission grids in enhancing system reliability and resilience.” Electric
