Has connected intelligence for resource-agnostic IoT arrived? | IoT Now News & Reports

If you believe everything you see, you could easily believe we’re moving into a world where both the connectivity and the intelligence IoT relies upon are undifferentiated propositions. The most appropriate of these resources is selected automatically by an autonomous agent so there’s no need to form an opinion or preference about what your deployment uses. The outcome is that IoT becomes agnostic about connectivity and intelligence. Recent innovations and introductions mean previously convoluted and complex processes for provisioning IoT connectivity and setting up intelligent resources at the edge or in the cloud have been resolved. The careful decisions of the previous decades, assessing connectivity types, providers and contract terms, are about to be replaced by an always-optimised automatic system. That vision means your Cat-1 LTE is as good as your non-terrestrial network (NTN), your low earth orbit (LEO) satellite coverage or your low power wide area network (LPWAN) technology. It also assumes an uninterrupted migration from 4G to 5G to 6G and radically oversimplifies the sophistication of IoT connectivity and intelligence. You didn’t have to scratch the surface market spiel at the show to uncover barely-hidden realities in which multiple technologies will co-exist in an ecosystem composed of different providers who are yet to work out they will interact with each other in the automated world. The clean vision of IoT resources provisioned according to need, through automated commercial agreements, supported by agentic AI, with flexibility assured isn’t really happening. No one really believes one human in a co-working space in Hyderabad or Helsinki is going to be finally responsible for your million-unit deployment with autonomous systems trusted to deliver optimised, secure connectivity whatever the situation. What people at the show believe is that the new SGP.32 specification will make it easier for IoT devices to access connectivity profiles

World IoT Day: from one billion to the next wave

Today marks World IoT Day, a day organised by the IoT Council where people ‘connected’ (geddit?) with the IoT industry can come together to highlight the milestones, challenges, and emerging trends shaping connected technologies. What is World IoT Day? Established in 2010 by EU projects Ecosystem Manager Rob van Kranenburg, the event turns sweet 16 on 9 April and has grown into a global platform for knowledge-sharing, from informal meetups to online forums. This year’s theme, set by Head of Products and Solutions Europe at Bosch Global Software Technologies, Kai Hackbarth, focuses on the sector’s AI-driven rebirth. “While debates on the ‘death of IoT’ persist, we are seeing a massive rebirth,” Hackbarth says. “Combining AI-driven intelligence at the Edge with a strong framework for data and infrastructure sovereignty allows us to move from simple connectivity to resilient, autonomous systems.” Connectivity Milestone A major focus this year is connectivity. According to the GSMA, the number of active NB-IoT and LTE-M connections surpassed one billion globally at the end of 2025. This reflects more than a decade of collaboration between mobile operators, device manufacturers, and standards bodies, enabling large-scale deployments in sectors such as utilities, transport, logistics, and smart infrastructure. Cyril Deschanel, Group MD Europe & UK at Wireless Logic, says that while connecting devices is no longer the main challenge, managing them across their full lifecycle is now critical: “Devices in smart cities, agriculture, and logistics are expected to operate reliably for ten to fifteen years. Ensuring connectivity remains resilient, secure, and adaptable across this period is key. Decisions made on day one can shape operational costs, security, and reliability for years to come.” He says standards like SGP.32 are playing a growing role, enabling enterprises to manage device connectivity remotely, comply with regional regulations, and localise traffic for data sovereignty.

Eco-Veranda and Eco-Canopy are strategically located as circulation and node spaces, with sheltered walkways and event spaces integrated with BIPV glasses to harvest solar energy and rainwaters. The entire masterplan is also conceived into three different clusters, weaved amongst existing urban green spaces and traffic networks. Transport, from commuting to freight delivery, is a major source of emissions and air pollution. Poor air quality is one of the main unintended side effects of mobility. Internal combustion engine and non-exhaust emissions, along with other transport-related pollutants, release harmful toxins that damage human and animal health and contribute to global warming. At WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities, we work to advance livable, enjoyable and healthy cities worldwide. In Latin America, poor air quality and a high share of polluting vehicles underscore the urgent need for urban interventions that cut emissions. At the same time, cities must ensure that everyone has access to high-quality transport, especially efficient alternatives to private, polluting vehicles. WRI Ross Center funded a project to develop an integrated approach between air quality and electric mobility, using WRI Colombia as a model for other teams in the region. During its development, we met with the WRI Global, Mexico, Colombia and Brasil teams working on air quality and electric mobility to explore synergies and identify potential collaborations. The urban monkeys in New Delhi are so bold they’ll steal the lunch right off your plate. If you’ve spent time in New York, you’ve probably seen squirrels try to do the same. Sydney’s white ibises got the nickname “bin chickens” for stealing trash and sandwiches. This brazen behavior isn’t normal for most species in the countryside, yet it shows up in urban wildlife, and not just in these cities. Studies show that animals living in urban environments around the world exhibit common sets of behaviors. At the same time, these urban animals are losing traits they would need in the wild. This process of urban animals’ behavior becoming more similar is known as “behavioral homogenization,” and it accompanies the loss of species diversity with urbanization. We study animals in urban settings to understand how humans can help wildlife thrive in an urbanizing world. In a new study, we explore the causes and the long-term consequences of these behavior changes for urban wildlife. What makes animals in cities similar? Cities, despite their local differences, share many of the same features worldwide: They are warmer than the surrounding countryside, noisy, polluted by light and, most importantly, dominated by people. New York’s squirrels, New Delhi’s monkeys, gulls in coastal cities of the U.K. and other urban wildlife have learned that people are a source of food. And because people typically don’t harm the animals, city-dwelling animals learn not to fear people. Cities drive evolution as well. Humans and the changes we’ve brought to cities have led to the survival of bolder animals, and those bolder animals pass on their traits to future generations. <b>City</b> officials tour Final Four sites to prep for <b>future</b> hosting duties

Hospitality officials from a dozen cities over the weekend spent time in Indianapolis and Phoenix -- the sites of this year’s men’s and women’s Final Fours respectively -- to “learn the ins and outs” of the events, according to Mickey Shuey of the INDIANAPOLIS BUSINESS JOURNAL. Indiana Sports Corp. Chief of Staff Sarah Myer said, “It’s really is a way for us to connect with NCAA staff, to learn the ins and outs of the venues and the fan events, and just be able to hear directly from the host city on the challenges and opportunities in hosting.” Shuey noted four cities hosting future men’s Final Fours had “groups visiting Indianapolis” this year: Atlanta (2031), Dallas (2030), Detroit (2027) and Las Vegas (2028). Another eight are also “represented as part of the NCAA program” -- Cleveland, Denver, Houston, K.C., Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans and D.C. -- with several of them “set to receive new or upgraded professional football stadiums in the coming years.” With Indianapolis hosting the 2028 women’s Final Four, Myer said that “more people are expected to go to next year’s event in Columbus.” She added that many cities represented at the men’s Final Four this year “made it a point to attend” in Indianapolis because of the city’s “history in hosting the event and its strong relationship with the NCAA.” Detroit Local Organizing Committee CEO Dave Beachnau said that the weekend has “consisted of numerous meetings and various opportunities for staff to immerse itself in behind-the-scenes tours, discussions with local organizers and the NCAA, and to experience the city” (INDIANAPOLIS BUSINESS JOURNAL, 4/6).

Dive Brief: - The Trump administration is once again asking Congress to eliminate spending within the Department of Housing and Urban Development, reducing the agency’s discretionary budget for fiscal 2027 by 13% to $73.5 billion. - The budget proposal eliminates key affordable housing and homeless assistance for local governments, including the $3.3 billion Community Development Block Grant and $1.3 billion HOME Investment Partnerships Program. It also cuts $393 million from homeless assistance programs in favor of services for mental health and substance abuse programs. - The U.S. Conference of Mayors called on Congress to protect the “critical” programs. “These programs have enjoyed bipartisan support for decades, have produced measurable results, and are more effective because they include local decision-making,” USCM President and Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt said in a news release. Dive Insight: Well into its second year, the Trump administration has so far been unsuccessful in convincing Congress to gut or reroute funding for federal affordable housing and homeless aid programs. In its FY26 budget, the administration called for $33 billion in cuts to HUD, a request that Congress “resoundingly rejected,” according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition. As <b>SMART</b> prepares for Healdsburg extension, a river business fears construction impacts

River’s Edge Kayak and Canoe, a north Sonoma County hotspot for river recreation owned by Kim and Dave Lockhart, sits about 100 feet south of the historic railroad bridge spanning the Russian River in Healdsburg. The bridge, which once served as a part of a passenger railway connecting Healdsburg to other North Bay communities, is set to be torn down and rebuilt as part of the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit’s extension into Healdsburg. The design phase of the project is expected to last until December 2026 with construction slated from January 2027 through November 2028. After the Healdsburg connection is complete, it will mark the return of rail service to the city after more than 70 years. Many in Healdsburg, including civic leaders, are celebrating the extension, but for the couple whose customers paddle directly beneath the bridge from April to October, the project has stirred concerns about noise, safety and what construction could mean for one of Healdsburg’s most beloved river recreation corridors. “I think the hardest part is that it is still unknown,” said Kim Lockhart, who co-owns the business with her husband. The Lockharts say they are not opposed to the passenger rail’s extension into Healdsburg, but say construction planned during the peak summer and fall tourism season in 2027 and 2028 could disrupt their business during its most important time of year. They say SMART officials haven’t kept them in the loop about key construction dates, leaving them unable to plan for their future. “I wanted to know what the safety plan would be, considering we have people under the bridge and there would be construction going on at the same time,” Kim Lockhart said.
