The proportion of miles driven autonomously during commercial operations, which PlusAI calls Autonomous Miles Percentage, increased from 99.2 percent to 99.8 percent. Remote Assistance Free Trips – the proportion of trips completed without intervention from a remote operator – increased from 79 percent to 85.2 percent. PlusAI is targeting more than 90 percent of trips without remote assistance before commercial launch. The company has also expanded its real-world operations during the first half of the year. During the period, PlusAI launched a commercial autonomous fleet trial with International and Ryder on the I-35 freight corridor in Texas, and announced its first autonomous trucks in Southern Europe with Spanish logistics operator Sesé and the Government of Aragon. It also released SuperDrive 6.0, adding night driving and construction zone handling. PlusAI also expanded its Nvidia collaboration and achieved four ISO certifications. Photo:Courtesy of Pony.ai Chinese autonomous-driving company Pony.ai said on Monday that its cumulative autonomous-driving distance worldwide has surpassed 100 million kilometers, marking the latest milestone as China's driverless sector moves from technology validation toward mass production and scaled commercial deployment. The milestone comes as L4 autonomous driving gains commercial traction across passenger transport and logistics in China, while Chinese companies are accelerating overseas deployment through partnerships with local operators in markets including Europe and Southeast Asia. Industry experts said that the significance goes beyond rising distance. As commercialization gathers pace, the next phase of competition will increasingly hinge on whether autonomous-driving technology can be deployed at scale, brought down to commercially viable costs and replicated across different transport scenarios and markets. At a recent media briefing, Pony.ai said that its fourth-generation L4 autonomous electric heavy-duty truck had entered mass production, with commercial operations expected to begin in the coming months. The company plans to deploy 500 to 1,000 trucks over the next two to three years across long-haul freight, bulk cargo transport and port logistics. A notable part of that transition is the sharp decline in costs. Autonomous-driving hardware costs for Pony.ai's fourth-generation heavy truck are about 70 percent lower than for the previous generation, according to the company. Similar cost reductions are also emerging in robotaxis. USDOT's updated Roadway Safety Plan continues illegal trucker crackdown, encourages ...

The US Department of Transportation has released an updated National Roadway Safety Strategy that plans to make roads, vehicles, and people safer. The updated report was released August 4th by Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. According to the report, the updated strategy features a continued focus on eliminating truck drivers with illegally obtained CDLs, and prioritizing increased truck parking initiatives. “We will achieve this [road safety] by ensuring that truck drivers are appropriately licensed and qualified,” Duffy wrote in a statement. The updated strategy will also focus on partnering with law enforcement to get dangerous drivers off the roadways, and increasing public education about “risky driving behaviors.” The strategy explains that DOT will soon “promote the safe deployment of automated vehicles,” by “giving Americans access to affordable vehicles with the latest safety technologies.” DOT plans to issue new guidance on how the country can safely deploy autonomous vehicles on roadways, and create a consistent regulatory system for them. DOT will also promote road design that makes roads safer and alleviates congestion. “The Department promotes the use of evidence-based engineering interventions and innovative practices that can significantly enhance the safety of America’s roadway infrastructure,” the report states. “This new strategy builds on that progress by doubling down on our coordination with the police, enhancing our anti-congestion initiatives, and embracing automotive innovation to make our streets safer than ever,” Duffy said.
