Additionally, the DMV can restrict fleet size, location, speed and weather conditions. Heavy-duty AVs must still follow commercial-vehicle rules. That includes California Highway Patrol weigh-station requirements. DMV’s milestone record says the Office of Administrative Law approved the regulations on April 28. The rules therefore create a pathway, not blanket permission for every truck. Why the Teamsters are challenging the move The court challenge turns the issue into more than a permit question. Teamsters California opposes a framework that could allow driverless freight vehicles. In contrast, the DMV says the same framework strengthens oversight of new technology. Safety is central to both positions. State rules require reports on system failures, immobilizations, hard-braking events, collisions and miles traveled. No self-driving semi has crashed on a California freeway. None has even been allowed to try. That is the detail missing from most of the coverage of Teamsters California’s new lawsuit against the state’s DMV, and it is the detail that actually matters. On August 5, Teamsters California filed a writ of mandate in Alameda County Superior Court asking a judge to void the DMV’s April 2026 regulations, which opened California roads to autonomous commercial trucks weighing 10,001 pounds or more. The union says the agency broke state law by dodging a full economic study, then compounded the problem by claiming the new rule would not eliminate a single job. Read past the safety headline and the real fight is over four words buried in California’s rulemaking process: no significant statewide impact. State law lets an agency skip a full economic impact study, the kind meant to catalog who wins, who loses, and how many paychecks disappear, if a regulation is expected to produce less than $50 million in costs or benefits during its first year. That threshold exists so the DMV doesn’t need to convene an economic task force every time it renumbers a form. Teamsters California says the DMV ran an entire new category of vehicle through that same fast lane. According to the lawsuit, the agency priced the rule’s cost almost entirely as compliance paperwork, the expense of filing incident reports, while pricing its effect on California’s roughly 200,000 unionized big-rig drivers at zero. That 10,001-pound line isn’t arbitrary, by the way. Transportation officials announced sweeping enforcement action targeting Albert’s trucking sector to remove chameleon carriers and fraudsters from Canadian roadways. Twenty “unsafe” trucking companies have been “eliminated” from the road since October 2025, according to an August 6 statement from Alberta’s Minister of Transportation Devin Dreeshen. This includes thirteen “chameleon carriers,” or trucking companies that change names in order to avoid regulatory oversight. An additional 40 chameleon carriers were prevented from obtaining their safety fitness certificates as part of the ongoing crackdown. Transportation authorities have also issued 443 administrative penalties to trucking companies since October. Dresheen pointed to a fatality crash that took place on May 27 in Brandon that was tied to an accused chameleon carrier that reopened as Conquer Transportation Inc. after the government of Manitoba revoked certification for the company under the name Conquer Transport in 2021. “In June, Alberta took action against Conquer Transportation Inc. following a collision resulting in a fatality in Manitoba. An investigation identified wilful and sustained non-compliance that posed serious and ongoing risk to the public. It was further determined that the carrier was engaged in chameleon practices to evade compliance and enforcement. Enforcement actions included $16,500 in administrative penalties and downgrading the carrier’s Safety Fitness Rating to Unsatisfactory, effectively shutting down its operations immediately,” Dreeshen said. In addition to the twenty trucking company closures, officials also announced the closure of five “fraudulent” Class 1 trucking schools. Chinese autonomy experts Pony.ai are planning to put 1,000 autonomous electric commercial trucks to work by 2027, but it’s the company’s plans to put 100,000 self-driving trucks on the road by 2030 that’s making headlines. Thought not particularly well-known in the US, Pony.ai has been developing autonomous trucks in China and the Middle East since 2018. Those first hand-built prototypes were succeeded by modular units as the company inched closer to automotive-grade series production through a variety of partnerships with established medium- and heavy-duty truck brands and now, nearly a decade later, they seem ready to make the leap to regular production of self-driving on-road trucks with partner brand SANY. They’ve even figured out the breakdown: Over the next two to three years, Pony.ai expects 500 to 1,000 Gen-4 autonomous heavy-duty trucks to be deployed across three primary scenarios in China: long-haul freight, bulk commodity transportation and port logistics. Pony.ai also expects light-duty trucks to scale faster, with a longer-term goal of reaching 100,000 L4 autonomous light-duty trucks by 2030. Self-driving trucks could be hauling cargo across highways in the near future. But not without the Teamsters having a say in the matter first. As Politico reports, the California branch of the nation’s largest union is suing state lawmakers, accusing them of rushing out new regulations that’re friendly to the autonomous vehicle industry without considering their impact on workers’ jobs. The lawsuit, filed Wednesday, takes aim at several state agencies including the Department of Motor Vehicles, and governor Gavin Newsom’s administration. The union contends that the new regulations are an “existential threat” to hundreds of thousands of union jobs, and is demanding that the DMV should be blocked from enforcing the new rules. “The DMV irresponsibly, carelessly, and unlawfully kept the public in the dark about the true economic and human costs of the amended Autonomous Vehicle regulations,” Julie Gutman Dickinson, an attorney representing the Teamsters, said in a statement, per Politico. “The only way to protect the public’s right to properly scrutinize regulations that will transform transportation in California is for the Court to order the DMV to immediately rescind the illegally enacted regulations,” Gutman added. California regulators have played hardball with autonomous vehicle companies in the past, including Elon Musk’s Tesla. And previously, Politico noted, it was the only state that prohibited large self-driving vehicles. That changed in April. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) took to the skies to catch semi truck drivers skipping mandatory brake check areas along I-80. On August 7, 2026, CHP’s Gold Run Division partnered with CHP Air Operations and CHP’s Valley Division Commercial unit to conduct an enforcement detail on I-80. Troopers said that the “I-80 Joint Commercial Enforcement Campaign” was launched in response to recent big rig brake fires. During the August 7 detail, CHP units in the air and on the ground were on the lookout for trucks skipping required brake check areas as well as speeding and other violations that could contribute to brake fires. “All semis must stop at the brake check area between Nyack and Blue Canyon on 80 westbound. Check to ensure your brakes cool before continuing down the mountain. Please do not park in this area for an extended period. If you decide to skip the mandatory brake check area, our eye in the sky will be watching,” CHP said. Tesla (TSLA) has rapidly emerged as a competitor that cannot be overlooked, and forecast data from major institutions clearly reveal why the market holds such strong enthusiasm for its prospects. Goldman Sachs’ latest estimates show that the global robotaxi market will reach $415 billion by 2035, with the U.S. market accounting for approximately $48 billion. More notably, autonomous trucking businesses will add even more room for imagination to this figure. This year, Tesla has offered robotaxi services at prices far below those of its competitors, and preliminary data have already revealed its advantages. Data from the San Francisco market show that the average price per ride for Tesla’s autonomous service is only $8.17, nearly half of Lyft’s average of $15.47 and well below Waymo’s significantly higher rates. NEW YORK — Carziqo has expanded its autonomous logistics footprint to New York, introducing its A-DS series autonomous delivery vehicles as part of the mobility technology company’s broader strategy to develop intelligent, technology-driven urban delivery networks. The New York rollout represents the latest step in Carziqo’s expansion of autonomous delivery operations into major metropolitan markets, where growing e-commerce volumes, high delivery density and increasing pressure on conventional last-mile logistics are creating demand for more efficient transportation solutions. According to Carziqo, the A-DS series is designed specifically for urban and last-mile logistics applications. The vehicles integrate autonomous driving technology, real-time fleet monitoring, route planning and centralized dispatch capabilities intended to support the movement of parcels and other eligible goods across high-demand delivery areas. Rather than operating as isolated vehicles, the A-DS units are designed to function as part of a connected fleet system. Carziqo’s platform can coordinate vehicle availability, route assignments, operating schedules and maintenance requirements based on changing logistics demand. The company said its New York program will initially focus on controlled deployment, operational data collection and optimization of vehicle performance within the city’s complex transportation environment, subject to applicable transportation, road-safety and autonomous-vehicle requirements.
