Colorado law enforcement agencies recently conducted a commercial vehicle checkpoint that uncovered dozens of violations, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) said.
On July 30, 2026, DCSO partnered with the Colorado State Patrol Monument Port of Entry Mobile Scales to set up a mobile checkpoint for commercial vehicles on Chambers Road, just south of Mainstreet, in Douglas County.

No Cab, by Choice: The Architecture That Sets N1 Apart Nearly every major autonomous truck in the Western market was built by taking an existing cab-equipped vehicle and layering a self-driving stack on top. The Volvo VNL with Aurora's hardware bolted on. The Peterbilt 579 with Kodiak's sensors grafted to the roof. U.S. trailer orders declined in June, while cancellation rates improved, according to ACT Research’s latest State of the Industry: U.S. Trailers report. Net U.S. trailer orders totaled 13,500 units, down approximately 7,300 units from May. That represented a 35% month-over-month (M/M) decline. Orders were also nearly 9% below June 2025 levels. Trailer Orders Slow Seasonally “After delivering counter to cyclical expectations results the past three months, net order intake in June slowed in seasonal fashion,” said Jennifer McNealy, director of commercial vehicle market research and publications at ACT Research. “Net U.S. trailer orders in June were 13,500 units, down about 7,300 units from May, a 35% month-to-month decrease. An autonomous semi truck partnership has plans to launch over 300 self driving tractor trailers in North Carolina by next year. The same company responsible for the autonomous semi trucks running freight routes in Texas and Oklahoma has plans to dispatch more than 300 of the self-driving rigs in North Carolina by 2027. According to Spectrum Local News, Volvo Autonomous Solutions in partnership with Aurora Innovations is already in the final phases before removing the safety driver entirely when it comes to the autonomous rigs running in the two other states. Now, the companies want to deploy more than 300 around their headquarters in Greensboro. The most up-to-date predictions estimate that the autonomous truck market will more than double by 2030, and safety standards for these driverless trucks were included in the Build America 250 Act. Despite the apparent success of the trucks in Texas and Oklahoma, industry leaders still worry about the safety and validity of these autonomous rigs. “Black ice is probably the hardest thing, even for a truck driver. It looks like water on the ground, but yet it’s frozen. So how can an autonomous vehicle pick up on black ice on a highway?” pointed out driving instructor John Payne. “This is a truck that is specifically built for autonomous, and not a truck where you bolt on or add on a secondary braking system and so on,” said Sasko Cuklev, a leader at Volvo Autonomous Solutions. “We have a driver shortage and with the increased demand, that gap might become even bigger, so we see it as a complement to what we have today… What we are focusing here is the long-haul stretches where you have to be out for several days, sleeping in the cab away from home,” he said. I’ve seen plenty of both in the trucking industry over the past 30 years, and from the outside, it’s not always easy to know how well things are really going behind the scenes. GREENSBORO, N.C. — Soon, the 18-wheeler in the next lane might not have anyone behind the wheel. Volvo Group, a truck manufacturer headquartered in Greensboro, has plans to roll out over 300 autonomous trucks as soon as 2027. In partnership with Aurora Innovations, Volvo Autonomous Solutions is currently running freight routes in Texas and Oklahoma with safety drivers, operating in the final validation phase before removing the safety driver and becoming fully autonomous. This is part of a larger industry shift, as research firm Fortune Business Insights predicts the autonomous truck market will more than double by 2030, reaching over $107 billion. The change has raised questions about safety and job stability, prompting lawmakers to write the first national safety framework for autonomous trucks in the Build America 250 Act. Under the bill, companies would have to prove their trucks are as safe as a human driver, mandate crash reporting, require cybersecurity policies to prevent hacking, and would also limit how many trucks one person can monitor at a time. Workforce grants would also be available to train drivers and technicians to work on the new technology. The government will determine the test routes and the enterprises participating in the field trials within fiscal year 2026.
